Does anyone knows if there is any way to use the Clies as External media storage in Mac OS the same way that can be done with MS Import in Windows, without using Missing Sync?
Perhaps there is a way in Linux or Unix that can work in Mac

The only way I've ever herd of is The Missing Sync (http://www.markspace.com/missingsync_clie.html). It also allows you to mount MS and CF on the desktop and use the clie as a source for iTunes and iPhoto.
The issue is basically that Sony have written USB drivers for the PC, but not for the Mac. All the Missing sync is is a set of USB drivers.

The MS can appear on the desktop using one of those card/media readers.
Get a card reader--USB multi/universal card reader that accepts different types of media crads costs less, and possibly faster, than Missing Sync.

Yeah, that was what I though
I'll get one of those card readers
But how Linux users mount their MS, probably with a card reader too!

I use a card reader from Lexar called a JumpDrive Trio (reads 3 types of media). It's about the size of one of those flash drives and plugs into a USB connection on my Mac. The media (Memory Stick) mounts in the finder and looks like any other drive. No extra drivers were needed, it just worked. It cost me about $19 at MicroCenter.

NB - I did buy a card reader. The card reader ( a "4-in-1 type, reads SmartMedia too") cost $25. It wouldn't mount a 512 Mb MS Pro.
The Missing Synch did, and also works with iTunes, iPhoto, and is WELL WORTH the $.
Ignore their owner's manual.
Connect USB cable, tap Clie app icon Data Import, tap Connect button; MS should show as hard drive icon on Mac Desktop.
Be sure to 'eject' the drive before tapping Disconnect button on Clie.

DON'T BUY The Missing Sync for Clié !!!
Last week I bought The Missing Sync for my T665C Clié, install it on my PowerMac G3 B&W 400 with Jaguar 10.2.8 and the worst happened.
iTunes crashing, iPhoto and Finder freezing and crashing, kernel panic, etc...
Until now I cannot use the Missing Sync and the helpdesk, sales and contact department on Markspace didn't answer any of my email's requesting help and I cannot cancel my order, too.
I made the tests containing on the support pages at Markspace but nothing works.
Stay away for this software...

When I copy files (like mp3s or isilo docs) from the laptop to the SD or memory stick using a card reader on Mac OS X instead of using a normal hotsync install, the system creates these annoying and unneccesary "._filename.." alias files on the card.
I guess these are just link files that are automatically created when I don't have a correct usb driver (like missing sync) installed, but does anyone have a solution to automatically removing these files?

They are Macintosh Resource Forks. Mac files can have 2 parts. A data part (what you typically think of as a file) and resource fork. The resource fork can have attribute information for the file. The attributes could be anything the application wants to stick in there. A word processing program might store the last cursor location, as well as per file editing preferences. iTunes might store some info specific to iTunes. iSilo might store the channel information on where the file came from. Who knows.

I think MissingSync up to version 3 was good stuff. Very reliable. But I think v4 has needs work.
I am running v4 and for just sync'ing my CLIE TH55 it does work (mostly). I am also running Mac OS X 10.3.4 (this could be a key difference between it kind-of working for me and causing failure for you on Mac OS X 10.2.8).
Also, I have not bothered to do the things needed to integrate iPhoto or iTunes. I just sync with the normal set of conduits, and a few typicaly 3rd party conduits. iSync, Docs to Go, TimeCop, Adobe Reader, iSilo.
When I first got v4, I tried doing wireless hotsync, but the few times I tried, it always failed, so I gave up for the moment. Maybe when I feel the urge, I'll try again, or maybe after Mark/Space puts out a v4.0.1 or v4.1, or something that addresses a lot of the v4 issues.
So while v4 is not giving exactly the same problems as you are, I am uncomfortable recommending v4 at this time. There is another thread in this forum that as a script to allow some CLIE models to at least hotsync with Palm Desktop. But it will not allow the Memory Stick to be mounted, nor will it provide wireless hotsync. If being able to sync is the key thing, then that migth be an option until Mark/Space fixes the problems in MissingSync (previously a very good product).

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the info! So one of the advantages using missing sync over just a plain usb card reader install is that those resource forks were handled correctly.
Is there anything like card export for the mac that strips out those resource forks/"._filenames" files?

Using Palm Desktop or Palm Desktop in conjunction with MissingSync to move files from your Mac to your PDA will only open the Data fork and only move that data to your PDA.
If you use a Memory Stick reader or you use "Data Export" on the CLIE then the Mac via the Finder is doing the copying and the Mac Finder will open both the data fork and resoruce fork. To the Mac the mounted Memory Stick looks like a Windows FAT file formated disk, so the Mac Finder creates a data fork (regular file name) and a resource fork file (._xxxx) name.
So it is the Finder that is creating the ._xxxx files. But the Mac will not show them to you because it put them there and it knows they are there.
You could use the Terminal.app to look at the mounted Memory Stick using the UNIX commands and clean them up with it.
There are also ways to get the Finder to show hidden files (files beginning with a dot are considered hidden files). What I'm not sure is whether the Finder would reconginze the resource forks anyway and continue to hid them.

Slammin'! So the correct question should have been how do I copy files in Mac OS X without using the finder to avoid all the unnecessary resource forks?
I just went on Version tracker and tried out Kopymac (http://www.tcsn.net/mont/index2.html) which copies files using the unix cp command to my SD card. After checking my card and verifying in isilo, these resource forks are gone.
Bob, Thanks big time for all your help!
