If I buy a junked NR70V could I then surgically remove the camera and attach the correct leads to the motherboard. I figure that if they used the same casing for both then the motherboard for both would be identical right?
Note: I am crazy.

Just give it a shot.
:D
I think you'd also have to flash the rom for the nr70v.

I know at the very least I'd have to have the version of the cam software that came with the NR70V

Are the ROM images for the NR-70 and the NR-70v the same?

Don't think so, the 70/v software includes the cam apps makin it slightly different.

Yes, but I doubt I'll be able to fash the rom off the NR70V considering it will be broken. Fortunately, I am a member of clie's developer site and therefore able to grab a rom off them. The real trick is getting the file off of ram. Does FileZ or McPhiling (sp) work?

I think you are likely to end up with a junk NR70V AND a junk NR70.:)
Probably be easier fixing the NR70V with parts from the NR70.

So true. Maybe I'll just shove the camera in the NR70 just to confuse people. As long as I don't touch the motherboard its more likely not to break.

rob: you're crazy!!
you're a maniac!
I'd like to see your finished product. What I'd also like to see is an NX70v without the CF slot, meaning removing the back panel of the NX70v, and rewiring the speaker of the NX70v to then fit it with an NR70v casing

I'll post some pics if I can. Not sure if the dead NR I'm getting is /V or not. Its kind of confusing with the pictures not matching the auction title. But I trust the seller since he has only 1 neg feedback out of 370.
PS: If someone wants to give (not lend) me an NX I'd be glad to try it; as I'll be having an empty case left over. :)

Turns out that it might actually be just an NR70. I'll keep me posted.

well, it looks like It's my turn now. I just got an NR70 from ebay that has a cracked digitizer, and I'm going to either put it's motherboard in my NR70v or put the NR70v's screen and camera in it. Which should I try?
P.S. Rob - did you try the transplant, or was it just an NR70 that you got? or did you just wimp out?:D

I bought a different NR70V from a guy here. And when I opened it up... well lets just say that it takes a lot of screws to be removed before you can remove either the screen or the motherboard. So very many screws.

I know:D . I took the NR70v apart the other day to see if the problem could have been a loose wire that I could solder back on, and I took out at least 20 screws trying to get to the bottom part of the motherboard.

Anyone remember where the website was that had the photos of a -70's innards? I'm double checking my hard-drive to see if I still have them somewhere. Perhaps that would help you figure out the physical part at least.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All is lost   :(
The NR70 motherboard doesn't have the connector to hook up the camera!!! I guess I'm gonna have to live without a camera.

well, I got everything hooked up except for the camera. It seems to be working fine, so I guess I have an NR70 that just looks a little cooler (and I can turn it on with the capture button:cool: so cool).

Do i have to unplug the screen from the source in the motherboard?? or can I unplug the wires at the top of the screen. It kind of looks like connectors, but I don't want to pull on them and break something.
Anyone?
Thanks.

If I remember correctly, you can just pull the ones at the top of the screen. You definitely don't have to mess with the motherboard, or even open up the bottom half of the clamshell.

OK. Well thanks to the advice from everybody no this forum, some luck on ebay and a set of jewellers screwdrivers my trashed sony nx70v that sony canada would fix for $400 is now charging peacefully in its crade with its replacement LCD happily installed.
Actually once you get over that you're fiddling with an expensive item the job is very very simple. open case being careful with screws, remove housing, untape wires froom old lcd, pull them gently out of their connectors, plug in old lcd...
The only thing was that because i had taken it apart a week ago the first time I put it back together the llcd image was upside dow.
Anyway if anybody else is thinking of doing a screen transplant on the n*70 family i will be happy to help.

Well, I just picked up a Sony Clie NX70V from eBay with a broken screen. I picked up a Clie NR70V last week, and I wanted to get another one with an expansion slot so I could add a WiFi card.
What I need right now is a replacement screen for the NX - I checked eBay and can't find one there. Does anyone have one handy? Anyone know where I can get one online? I might try switching the screen from the NR to the NX (when I get it), but I'd like to have both of them functional...
I'm actually thinking of keeping the NR in the car, and using it as a GPS and an emergency camera/information storage unit when I need it.
Any help would be appreciated!

It turns out that NX70 and NR70 screens are interchangeable.
Keep watching Ebay....bid on something w/ undamaged LCD and you'll get lucky. be patient, remember you're bidding on a broken item and one will be up for auction tomorrow, and the day after that, etc etc. I've seen garbage go for lots of money due to bidding frenzy effect. Scary...remember you're doing this to SAVE money..
I wanna know where the people that dump the broken handhelds get them from. I'd love to eliminate the middle men.
Looks like stuff turned in for warranty by best buy or someting like that. (just a guess)
Anybody else know?
I checked with a sony parts supplyer for the LCD, and they wanted (get this) $300 CDN for the part. I'm very pleased with LCD i got for $50 USD.
Sorry I can't be of more help on the source. But people told me the exact same thing. My NX70V broke in october and I didn't get a new screen until now. I caved in and bought a new ux50 between those two dates... sure makes my nx70 look big and ugly...

yea, keep watching ebay. You aren't gonna find a "replacement screen" (not for a decent price, at least) but you will find broken PDAs with functional screens. Is the broken screen on the NX in just the digitizer or both the digitizer and lcd? If there's any inky stuff leaking out or wierd colored spots in the screen, it's the LCD. If it just looks like broken glass, then it's only the digitizer.
