I've already owned two handhelds, a Clie & a Visor.
Currently, I'm looking for another handheld (Clie) with MP3 for myself. Any suggestion, pls ?

The Clies that support mp3s are: NR/NX series, NZ90, T665C, SJ33 and the N series. Which one you want depends on what you want for the rest of the clie (you will also need a memory stick). If you want high storage capacity go for an OS 5 device (NX/NZ) as they will work with the new memory stick pro.

When you read a little in this forum, you should be able
to make your decision. It depends on whatelse you expect
from your gadget.

Do I have to get the " White Memory Sticks" " Magic Gate" or Just use the regular blue memory sticks for MP3's ?

Expensive magic gates ones for atrac3, either for mp3

If you want to go for real budget and real worth the value, go for SJ33. I'm a bit disappointed with Tungsten T. The price is just not right. Anyway, the memory stick Pro will cost you a bomb so you wouldn't need it to store mp3.

20 songs on a 128mb memory stick - anyone actually use (waste IMO) their Clies like this?

I wish sony would make a top end (VG/200MHz/BT/yadayada) Clie withOUT an MP3 player.

A really budget minded person would try to get an N760 off ebay...they have great battery life too. Brian

what wrong with keeping the MP3 player in. Some people use it. I use when when I go to work. I don't need more than 20 songs because its only 20 minutes away. For long trips I would use my 54 hour battery life minidisc player, and use my clie for other things, but I still like the MP3 function.

I use my clie for mp3s a lot and I think a lot of people do so the perfect clie would definately include it. If you dont like mp3s dont use them but a clie is good enough to function as a normal mp3 player

Twenty MP3s on a 128mb MS? Is that all? I had no idea there was such a difference! I've been using the MagicGate Memory Sticks for Atrac3 files...mainly because I already had the Sony MS9 Network Player, so I've just been using the same sticks for my Clie T665.

I've been thinking that I really should start converting my CDs to MP3s, but if you can only get half as many songs on a memory stick, maybe I'll just stick with Atrac3...

I guess I could have mentioned how many Atrac3 files I can get on a 128 mb MS...Usually between 45 and 50...and that is NOT at the highest compression! Theoretically, I could get up to 80 songs on one stick!

There is nothing wrong, except that if it's not included I won't have to pay for it (as far as I know, it involves an extra hardware chip) with cash and with battery life when I buy my next Clie.

Like you, I use my minidisc player, but when I become serious about mp3, I shall buy something more like an IPOD - Unless of course by then there are 40gig Memory sticks. ;)

Aside:
I have to admit though, I did manage to listen to my few songs almost continually on a transatlantic flight recently. The guy sitting next to me had to turn his iPaq off after about 2 hours ... this was after he told me that the camera on my Nr70v was just a joke. I was laughing.

Do you have lots of memory sticks, or do you just change the songs regularly? I find the slow download to MS a pain for this too.

I have a SJ30 and allthough I only have a 64 meg stick it holds about an hours worth of music, which is generally enough for what I need I keep a library on my PC and swap when I need to. I have a friend who just bought a Tungston and I'm not impressed, apart from the price the screen isn't up to much the mp3 without headphones is average and my SJ30 is smaller. wouldn't change it for a palm or an N series sony they are too big. my sj does everything I need. I use Kinoma for movies multimail for emails pg pocket for pictures aswell as Yi show which is outstanding, a couple of high res games and thats all I need. HIGHLY RECOMENDED..

What format do you use? I use MP3s, encoded at 96 or 128 kbps and I get about 35 or so files on a 128M stick. And, when you count the one radio drama on the stick, encoded at 32 kbps, I have about 2.5 hours of audio on each stick.

You consider this a waste?

For me, yes ... I have about 30 games, and over 400 novels on a 64mb stick. I store more music than that on a minidisc as mentioned earlier. The waste for me is the cost of the stick - the media is worth more than its use.

But this just illustrates the horses for courses principles and the reasons why my ideal Clie would not have a built in MP3 player. I was just amazed that anyone could afford to use a Clie like this. I have been educated.

Just a comment about ATTRAC vs. MP3. When you compare lower bit rates like 66 and 105, ATTRAC has a clear advantage when it comes to sound quality vs. size. But when compare the higher bit rates like 128(MP3) vs. 132(ATTRAC) the difference is very little. For me I do not like listening to anything below 160. All my music has been set to 192. I would like to go higher, but SONY's PATHETIC 128 stick is limiting.

I hope some other PDA maker makes a sound controller. To me it's the only thing SONY has over the other manufactures.

Let's see, a new SONY for 800 bucks and a new 1Gig MS Pro for 800 buck for a grand total of 1600 bucks. NO. I think I'll buy the new iPod.

I have a N760 with 6x128MB sticks. I would use ATRAC for the great compression but.... MP3 is a more easily handled standard especially downloading music off the web. I could use the 64kbps MP3 mode and get 48 tracks on a stick but you can definitely hear a difference. I travel some so having a variety of music with me is worth it. The 760's battery life is excellent. I can travel all day and listen almost constantly.

My default 128M memory stick has about 50 games on it, 25 novels, and a lot of reference books and files.

> and over 400 novels on a 64mb stick.

Well, if you are going to consider that a stick with music on it is a waste, I'll contend that having 400 novels on a memory stick is just as big of a waste. Unless you finish 4-5 novels a day, there is no reason to carry that many around with you.

> I store more music than that on a minidisc as mentioned

To different people, "waste" means different things. I personally find it a waste of effort to carry around a separate music player. I used to carry around a portable MP3 player, but found that I didn't use it often enough. Now, since my MP3 player is a part of my Clie, I always have it handy. And, my MP3 memory stick is always in the Clie's case.

As for the cost, well, I have seven 128M memory sticks that I paid between $98 and $27 for. One has photos, one has maps, one has MP3 files on it. You'll be shocked to hear that two of them have movies (only about 40 minutes on each) and one of them is completely empty in case I need to copy and transport large files between computers.

I find that memory sticks are a waste if you don't turn over the contents every few months.

I have a number of memory sticks of various sizes and I use them for both my Clie and my Sony Cybershot so using them to store MP3s when not taking pictures is very useful.

Reference stuff too. Some I even keep in RAM (!) and one in ROM (!!). There is no need for you to contend anything though.

It is impossible for a human (or any animal) to do something for no reason. Personally, I have a message that I am spreading. The literature is part of the message.

Perfect, I am glad you feel more productive. Like I said 'horses for courses'. There is no way that I could justify the cost of ...

>As for the cost, well, I have seven 128M memory sticks that I

I don't like changing sticks much either, it kind of defeats my object. But for $27 I would be tempted. Can you tell me where I can get deals like this?

>You'll be shocked to hear that two of

I am shocked. But again, whatever you need for you is great, for me that would be a waste of money.

>and one of them is completely empty in case I need to copy
>and transport large files between computers.

As you say, different definitions of waste.

That was the deal in last December from Amazon.com. for 128MB MS SanDisk. I fit 40-42 songs (174 minutes) in it, so it's not bad for $27. It just so nice to be able listen to MP3 while reading book from the same device and you just have one device to carry around in your pocket. I'm glad to have MP3 in my Clie.

I just figured out how to get mp3 files off my new G4 notebook onto my new Sony CLIE NX 70, and was very disappointed that I only was able to get one album on it. This on top of weeks of not being able to get my CLIE wireless card to work with my Airport Base station and Im ready to toss them both out the window and take my IBM thinkpad and Visor out again.

This CLIEsource forum is a very helpful community.

I only carry 25, but that's because I keep books/pictures/programs in the same MS. Maybe I should buy a 32 and keep a 128 entirely for music...

I currently have 34 MP3's on a reg 128M memory stick plus a complete backup of files from my Clie, plus 7 E novels and approx 12 splashfoto pictures of Grandkids. It depends on how critical you are about compression of the MP3's. I use MusicMatch Jukebox to select the quality of my MP3's.. I'm certain that the compression quality I'm using doesn't match up to the Atrac files but since MP3's are only part of what I use my NX60 for, it works great for me.
