View Full Version : The NX80 is dead - long live the NX80!

Greetings!
I'm making this post with more than a little sadness. My NX80 died today, right in the middle of entering an address into the address book. I had left my TH55 at home, having felt guilty about not spending enough quality time with my NX80 recently. I was actually enjoying the change of pace and the heavier, solid feel of my NX as I was keying in the address, when the screen suddenly went black!
No amount of button pressing, resetting, shaking, swearing, pleading, or praying would bring it back to life. The screen stayed black. I opened up the battery compartment and unplugged the battery, waiting 5 minutes before plugging it back in. Still nothing. Hard reset, while my last option, suddenly seemed VERY inviting. Alas, this also was fruitless. :(
At this point, quite upset about the whole situation, I returned home and gathered all NX80 related materials together and took a trip to Best Buy. Luckily, I purchased one of the original protection plans, and after MUCH back and forth discussion with the customer service counter people it was determined that Best Buy could not obtain a new NX80 for me in any reasonable amount of time, and that the best course of action would be for them to refund my original purchase price ($638). I found myself thanking myself VERY much for having the wisdom to buy the protection plan in the first place.
I don't know what I will do when my refund check arrives, I am considering either buying another NX80 on sale somewhere (I occasionally see them available at CompUSA for around $300) or maybe a European TH55 (which I have been running an ad on ClieSource offering to trade for the last few weeks). Any thoughts?
Best wishes,
Bawko

BMEngineer,
How long have you been using the NX?
I have had my NX80 for a little under a year. I purchased one of the first ones available, the day that Best Buy got their first shipment of NX80's locally. At the time, I knew it would be a great PDA, but I had no idea HOW good. It was my faithful companion up to the time I bought my TH55, and it served me VERY well. I'm not one to grow fond of gadgets, considering the rate at which they are replaced, but the NX80 really is a fine piece of machinery - if I don't obtain another then it will be missed.
Best wishes,
Bawko

And I had the exact same results with my BB warranty and I got my new NX80 for 317 plus they refunded me the difference (300).
I am a happy man. :)
My NX80 died today. :( May it RIP. (http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=46568)

NX80 is my very faithful companion also. I got it since last december and it is still doing well. I can't believe the life of NX80 will be so short.

I have had 3 generations of pda's through my first pda's warranty from BB. I now buy all of my electronics from there with a warranty. They ALWAYS have taken it back with no questions asked and I've either gotten store credit or have been able to swap out my pda for the newer model (My latest was for the nx80v). They've even allowed me to return the warranty at a pro-rated refund and to purchase a new warranty for my new toy. I am hoping my nx80 will last a while but I have 1.5 years left on the warranty. I think I'll get a ux next.

hey... of all the PDAs that ive had through the years - i could definitely say that my NX80V is the BEST!!! and one that has been there faithfully - with its speed, its battery, its memory (of course with JackFlash), its "upgradability," its keyboard, and most of all its CF-slot...
and with you guys mentioning about your NX80s dying - what would happen if Sony never releases another NX?
what would happen to me?
no! no! i wouldnt want my NX80V to die!!!
ps: here in Japan, there are lots of NXes (in almost mint conidtion)at almost all the 2nd hand shops (and of course, including the auction sites)

by the way... was it actually determined why your NX80V just died? any autopsy report?

Interesting that you would ask! When I demonstrated to the customer service person that it wouldn't turn on, she went in back and grabbed the tech guy. He asked if I had done a hard reset, and asked if the battery was charged. I said yes to both. He then tried to turn it on using the slide switch, saw that it was still off, and put it in the box. Sealed the front of the box with tape, put a return tag on the box, and turned to the customer service girl: Yep - it's dead.
Amazingly incompetent, if I do say so myself! :D

could only be a dead battery...
but either way - you are really lucky to get a refund...
:D
but what would you prefer? a refund or your NX80V alive?

clie_wannabe,
It definitely was NOT a dead battery, I have never run my NX80 battery dry and I keep it on the charger all the time.
Yes - I consider myself to be lucky I got a refund, from my understanding the new version BB warranty is not as kind to people as the older version I had.
As for which I would prefer, a refund or my NX80V alive, I would probably have to say the refund. This is why: I still have my TH55 to get me through, and with the refund check (when it arrives), I can either:
(a) buy another NX80 and have about $300 left over
(b) buy the European TH55 with Bluetooth I've been lusting after
(c) kick in another $200 and get both! :D
Any suggestions are appreciated.....

Bawko,
Sorry for your NX80. I have been spending a lot of time with mine, and acquired bunch of accessories for it (WL110, KB100, etc etc). It would be horrible if that happens to me, but it will one day... That's why I also have the BB warranty ;)
I actually extended my BB warranty for another 3 years around Christmas. One quick question for you regarding the BB PSP: Did they mention it to you that you can go to another retail store (e.g., CompUSA) and get a new PDA, while they would send you a check for that amount (of course matching your original $638)? Or, did they just give your money back? Did you have any more time left on the BB PSP? Any news about the remaining time on your PSP? The reason I am asking this is that when I extended my BB PSP, I spoke with few store managers & PSP reps and was told that even if the new unit is purchased from another store, the remaining time on the PSP will cover the new unit. Too good to be true? Would love to hear your experience on this....
Thanks!

Actually, these issues never came up. They determined that it was dead, looked up all local stores for an NX80 in stock (they found none), and started talking to me. I told them I wanted it replaced ONLY with an NX80, as I had a WL100 card and memory stick to transfer over, and I had purchased JackFlash. They told me they could probably get one through their corporate offices, but that it would take a few weeks. The other option was to order one online, but I would have to pay for it and they would reimburse me once it arrived. I told them that all of these options were unacceptable, as I had purchased the warranty under the direct understanding that it was a "walk-in" replacement and that there would be none of the nonsense they were proposing.
The store manager, at that point, said that the only other option was for them to send me a refund check for the purchase price. I thought about it for maybe 20 seconds, then said "sure". Paperwork was filled out, and (hopefully) a check will be on the way soon. They said 3-5 business days, we'll see.
Best wishes,
Bawko

ClieKun,
Hmmm.... It hasn't worked out for me yet. I am now without an NX80, and I only have a promise from Best Buy that a check will be here by the end of the week. I don't have much doubt that it will, but until then it's just counting eggs before they hatch (that's an old Chicken pun! :D)

Thanks for the reply Bawko. Wow... I never thought that they would actually give one's money back under PSP. You should have asked for the remaining -pro-rated- amount of the PSP back as well, since it is terminated early...
I was happy that getting a replacement from a competitor is now an option under PSP, but knowing that they may actually give your money back ($600+) is great! That extra $60 PSP was the wisest spent money on anything I have purchased so far!!!
I keep seeing offers from CompUSA online store showing NX80's for $299. I hope you'll be able to get one of those...

My NX73 died after only four months...just got the replacement from CompUSA...if this one dies before the warranty is up...it's going back to sony. I love this thing! compusa had the nx80 for $299 with refund last week...don't know how much now...but the San Bruno store in the SF Bay area had a few available.

Bawko, I would suggest getting the TH55 w/Bluetooth. It is very convenient to have both WiFi and Bluetooth. With my NX80, I was constantly carrying both the WL110 and BT MS (which by the way I'm selling both, just haven't listed it yet) with my NX80. I need to be connected at any place, anytime...just my requistes. I think if you really like the TH55 in place of your NX80, replace the TH55 you have now, if you want, or keep it, but nevertheless I suggest getting the TH55/E with Bluetooth.
BTW, your hotmail acct is full, I can NOT send you the NetFront.

How come I can't find the TH55 w/ BT on the Sony website? The one they advertise there does not mention Bluetooth at all.

The TH55/E is sold in other markets outside the US, so the US Sony website will not carry this specific model. Now if you go to the UK Sony website, it is listed there. I bought mine from Expansys...here's the website if you're interested:

Greetings!
Actually, a bunch of recent developments has decided this issue for me. First of all, I just returned from Las Vegas on a short trip, and made over $400 playing the roulette wheel while I was there. This, combined with my refund check from Best Buy (which I haven't received yet - but hope to have in my hands by Friday) have given me a few more options.
Second, I was in a local CompUSA store today shortly after returning to town, and noticed that there was an open-box special TH55 in the glass cabinet. I asked about it, they said I probably wouldn't want it because it was missing the stylus, install disk and manual, and had a large scratch on the back of the case near the camera button. It also had a tiny scratch on the flip cover. They wanted $289 for it as-is, which seemed like a GREAT deal for me considering I already have the install disks, disk+manual, and an extra stylus. I didn't mind the 2 scratches, as the camera button scratch was only visible if you are looking at the back of the unit, and the cover scratch was not visible AT ALL when the backlight is on.
I jumped all over this deal, after giving it 10 or 15 seconds of thought. They seemed surprised that I would want it, until I explained to them I already had the missing parts and that the scratches didn't bother me. I am now the proud owner of two TH55's!
Third situation that has come up is that a friend-of-a-friend is looking to sell his used NX80 so he can buy a UX. He was asking $400 for it, but after I informed him that they could be purchased BRAND NEW for around $300, he changed his price to $250. I am seriously thinking of taking him up on the offer.
Finally, I found out that my cellphone service provider does NOT offer a bluetooth cellphone and plan, which pretty much does away with my need for a European TH55 model. Maybe someday if my cellphone provider gets a clue, I'll look into obtaining one (maybe they will be less expensive and more readily available by then? I can only hope! :) ).
For now, I am happy with my TH55's, and may be adding the NX80 back into the mix soon!
Best wishes,
Bawko

Greetings!
BettyE - No, that did not occur to me. Mainly because I have other sources of cash for savings and banking. My Gadget budget easily allows for another 2 (or 3) PDA's, and when the "next great PDA" comes out I'll be able to afford it easily - if I want to. I think, though, that for my uses it would be VERY hard to beat the TH55, which is part of my reason for wanting 2 of them. The CompUSA deal today was just too good to pass up, especially considering that there were zero defective pixels in the unit (which is not that common, from my experiences).
coolride - Yeah, two TH55's is pretty cool so far! I spent the last half hour "cloning" the software between them, which was a bit more difficult than I thought it might be. I had to set the Hotsync ID's the same using ChangeName, then I tried to restore a memory stick backup. However, apparently the Sony memory stick backup program checks the serial number, so it wouldn't fly. I then downloaded a copy of BackupBuddyVFS, which did the trick. It had a minor glitch with the WiFi update files, but after installing those manually I had two completely identical TH55's! Quite cool. :D
By the way, thanks for the files you didn't send me! :D
Best wishes,
Bawko
