View Full Version : auto hard-reset. Partial Unerase/Recover files

I have the palmtop: Sony Clie PEG-TG50/U.
It halted and I had to press the reset button to issue a soft reset. (I
didn't press any key at the same time with the reset.) Usually the reset
button just restarts the machine, but this time it wiped out everything
(as if I had done a hard-reset, although I didn't). Unfortunately I had a
long time to back-up my data.

Is there anything I can do to (even partially) recover some of the
remaining data? I am pretty sure that even a hard reset does not clear the
memory bit per bit, rather it just cleans the first some bytes and
destroys the file system tables (or whatever data structures are used). I
would be happy if I could retrieve even the remaining bits stored in the
memory chip in raw format (even if I have to remove/unsold the memory
chip) I am particularly interested for one .pdb file.

Any help, ideas, or knowledge would be extremely appreciated
Thank you very much!
nicolas

I won't give you any hopes about it.

The flash memory in your palm is like ram on your desktop pc, and a hard-reset is like turning your computer off and on, you just lost everything.

sorry pal

I thought that the internal memory of the palm was non-volatile. According to what you say it look like battery-backed-RAM. Is this the case???

Thanks

I would think it's battery-backed. That would explain why when you leave your Clie uncharged for a week or two it loses all your memory, etc...

Yep,

unfortunately, the only non-volatile memory on your palm is the rom, that has the palm os, and, if you have jackflash, you could save there some of your files.

but the ram is totally volatile, as said by sharkboy, if you let you palm battery to get uncharged, your memory will be totally erased, that's why they give you a week to recharge your battery when it gets discharged (it gets discharged when hits the 5% line), you have all the week for the last 5% of the battery to go away and lost all of your info.
