View Full Version : What apps won't work on MS?

I'm considering moving from a Tungsten T3 to a TG50 (for the keyboard and BT) and the most concerning thing to me is having to get used to only having 11 mb of usable memory, after having all that "space" on the TT3. I have a 256 MB MS Pro on order from Amazon, so I'm wondering which if any applications are out there that don't like to live on the MS. Anyone have any difficulties with certain applications?

I am hoping to purchase the Wi-Fi MS adapter soon, so of course, my e-mail and web browser apps will need to be in RAM. Any suggestions on making those applications work smoothly?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I've heard that Documents To Go has problems on the memory stick.

For your other programs though, PowerRUN will probably be your best bet. It takes care of everything for you. Just tell it which program to move to the memory stick, and it does it. Works a little differently than putting it in the /palm/launcher folder, but IMO, does it better.

Regarding the WiFi MS and suggestions, one thing I strongly would suggest is getting a program called Disk Manager (on freewarepalm.com). This will allow you to create a virtual "memory stick" in the internal memory of the TG50. Why? Remember that most mail applications and NetFront require a memory stick to save attachments. I've tested Disk Manager with NetFront 3.1 and Iambic Mail. Appears to be no problems... Haven't tried it with a WiFI MS yet, as I do not have one.

Good luck with it! :)

Thanks for the information. I'm actually a longtime Zlauncher user, so hopefully I can accomplish all of the same tasks as I could with PowerRun.

And I'll have to see about Disk Manager. It's almost a bit comical to think that one needs to create a "virtual disk" on the Clie with the limited amount of RAM that the TG50 has!

Again, thanks for the information.

Thanks for the info about Disk Manager, rcxAsh. Glad to hear it works with NF 3.1. My WiFi MS is supposed to arrive today for my TG-50, so I'm going to download it now!

The main module of Documents to Go (214K) must reside in RAM, however, the others can be moved to the MS. Dataviz states this in their brochure, and I've found product works as advertised.

Don't know what you're using for email, but SnapperMail is great with the TG-50.

Clie Mail will not work on the MS no matter what.

Most apps run fine from MS except for the following.

1) Apps that have hotsync conduits won't hotsync. (There are work arounds using PR of ZLauncher).

2) Apps that have alarms or scheduled start times. Alarms won't sound or app won't start, if run from MS and the Clie is off.

There are a few others, mentioned above, that have their own quirks. Most of the apps in 1 & 2 work fine if you put them in ROM, using JackFlash.

Aww, I'm so jealous lol. Joking. I actually just ordered my WiFi MS today. Should come in a week or so... I'm banking on the fact that NetFront and Iambic Mail will work with Disk Manager. I don't see why not.. but my tests were performed using a PPP USB connection with my computer and no memory stick in the slot. Hopefully the WiFi stick won't do anything strange. But, I noticed that NetFront allows you to choose which "stick" you want to save your download onto.

I haven't had any experience with ZLauncher, but I hear that many people use it as an alternative to PowerRUN. It apparently does the same thing.

Regarding the need to create a "virtual disk" on your Clie, this is a must if you want to download attachments and files when your surfing the internet with a WiFi MS. This is simply because most programs will require you to save the file to a memory stick. Until Hagiwara comes out with a WiFi MS with intergrated memory, you won't be able to save your attachments without the help of a program such as Disk Manager... My current plan is to create a small virutal disk (say large enough to hold a few Word Documents). And after downloading, move them promtly to a real memory stick thus clearing the space.

Thus, TMann, it may be useful for you to see if you can get an older TG50. The newer ones (such as mine) do not have a flashable ROM. This means that I lose a possible extra 2 MB or so (?) of memory. And on the TG50, that's quite a lot. If you can give the serial number of the TG50 in question, people here should be able to tell you if you have flashable ROM.

Zlauncher doesn't do the same thing as power run.... It does it WAY better... If you haven't compared them please do. I've never gotten an error or bad transfer or cluttered folders like I did with power run, and ZLauncher launches apps of memstick faster too. Powerrun is just basically useless for the last 2 years.... I regretted buying it but that's software for ya! Zlauncher IS the KILLER app for OS5 clie's
