Friends

You've seen this warning in the Clie Appication Manual under "Playing Audio Files. . ."

"Do not connect equipment that is connected to other equipment such as an amplifier, to the headphones jack of your CLIÉ handheld. It may damage your CLIÉ handheld."

Is this a serious warning?  I enjoy hooking up external "PC" style speakers to my NX, or routing the output to a "CD to Cassette" adapter into a sound system.

What are the dangers, and have you had any problems?

Thanks

I really don't think so. I've always plugged mine into my computer speakers and to my iRock (wireless FM transmitter) in my car without a hitch. It shouldn't be a problem. But who knows, I'm no electrical engineer :)

Some higher-powered devices (stereo systems, bigger amps, etc.)can actually send a small voltage back along the cord going to the 'output source', and that could be terrible for the Clie!

Your big household amp, for example, is designed for sources that can handle this power drain and/or leakage voltages. Most of your car gear is as well.

On the other hand, most gear designed to use the standard 1/8" plug should be pretty safe... although as a rule of thumb- volume = power demand. If you try to use a set of computer speakers, for example, that do NOT have their own power source, they will suck the power needed to amplify the sound from your Clie battery. The fast drain MIGHT cause some problems (I doubt it would really do much beyond just being annoying, but...!)

I routinely use a few different pairs of powered amp speakers, 'CD to Cassette' adapters, and so on with no worries.

Another consideration is one that someone may inadvertantly connect a line out device from their stereo equipment into the headphone jack of the Clie, oe even a line out jack from a sound card. I have seen it done before.:)
