View Full Version : T665 vs. TG50

Okay, I am finally going to bite for a color PDA in the next couple of months. I need some help to decide between my top two PDA picks. I would like to either pickup a T665 (1st choice) or wait for the TG50 (BT not important to me at this time). The SJ33 may be too bulky for my taste (looking for a front pocket PDA), and I like a metal case.
I am proficient with Graffiti, but I might like a keyboard just as well. However, I think that I would really like a T-series with VG, but that seems to be vaporware at the moment. I don't need BT, or MP3 for now. I DO need a much faster unit than the 33Mhz T415 that I currently own. I would like to see a significant improvement in screen refresh, and MS access.
So any suggestions would be appreciated. What do you think?

TG 50. From the limited info. my obsevation are follow:
1. OS5 or better (OS 5.2) that can handle VG2 or more than 16mb
2. BT
3. 200 MHZ
4. Built-in keyboard
5. MS Pro compatibility
6. Piscel View
and hey, anything new should be better...

I agree. Every reason to wait for the TG50.

Windows 98 vs Windows 2000. Windows 98 blows past Windows 2000. Who is newer? Yah... bad generalization there sindu.

Read again. Anything new SHOULD be better. It doesn't mean that anything new is better.

The TG50 is powerful, absolutely beautiful, and SMALL. Get the TG50 and a Belkin Bluetooth WAP or T68i (depending on your needs) -- that should be an amazing combo!

Thanks jeff...SHOULD is the word. We all know PPC>Palm is a pro PPC guy and maybe he work for Microsoft, who knows. But he is being polite in this thread and slightly oversight on the choice of word I have. Anyway, he admitted that Microsoft screw up big time..W98 is better than W2K.

LanMan, it isn't an easy choice to make. The T665C is a good device, with okay battery life. It is still too early to know very much about the TG50, and whether or not it would allow for input on the screen. I like the idea of a thumboard because it would be faster (for some) to enter text. Also, it takes som wear off of the screen and the normal Graffiti area. I wish there was a better shot of the keyboard area and how it was layed out. It appears to have two function keys, a red line and a blue line. How the keyboard works exactly is still up in the air.
All I can say is try to hold off and see what happens. I'm one of the few that the TG50 appeals too. It is slim, sleek and has a lot of buttons ;-). I'd love to read some hands-on reports on the unit. One thing I like about the keyboard is it could make things a lot easier, and I wonder if Sony designed it so you could control all aspects of the unit with the keyboard. It would be a b***h to have to use the stylus while trying to use the keyboard.

I cannot believe I just read
Windows 98 vs Windows 2000. Windows 98 blows past Windows 2000.
in no way whatsoever does Windows 98 surpass 2000, in fact the only part you got right is that it just Blows,
Win 98 is the crashiest piece of ****e I have ever had to use.
oh hangon you're one of those people who bought a Ford KA or KA2 (which if anyone noticed is Ka Ka) or a Citroen CV aren't you?

MadBob,
Both of them are junk. They make you buy faster CPU, more Ram, and hard disk. I am longing for palm base PC.

Gentlemen, might I remind you that this thread is NOT a Win98 vs. Win2K thread. Please, go to OT for that debate. Besides, they are completely different products that are intended for different markets.
T1000X, I'm with you. I am intriqued by this unit. It looks to be almost as thin as the T665! I am really coming round to the idea of the thumb-board. I will be anxious to see this puppy in person.

Lanman, I went from 415 to 665 about a month ago, and I'm very happy. for the current price, 665 is a great value. But if you have the extra cash, TG50 looks pretty cool. While BT may not be a big deal now, it will be shortly, and I would imagine 200Mhz is a big jump from 66. From a data input view, I've seen tests where thumboards are just as quick as grafitti, but integration is the key. You don't want to have to stop and pick up the stylus every few minutes. Good luck with the decision, the good news is that either choice is good.;)

Serotta, I'm curious. What BT functions do you see coming along this year. I understand keyboard (which doesn't seem necessary with the TG50), cellphone, and hotsync connections. Do you see any other potential uses?
I currently have nothing with any BT functions, so it would mean upgrading a lot of equipment to use it. That's not really something that I can afford to do right now. (see sig for explanation - new dad's will understand)

1. Printer
2. BT enable PC
3. BT connection for network gateway
4. BT headphone
5. BT enable camcorder / camera
6. BT games
7. anything you would do with serial cable / UBS / infra-red.

Sindu, it sounds like I would have to replace/add equipment to all of these items for BT functionality. That seems that it would be pretty expensive. I'm not sure that BT is ready for prime-time enough to consider replacing a bunch of existing equipment to simply take advantage of BT.

LanMan,
Well you would have just to keep BT in mind when you purchase your next electronic. Granted BT is not very popular except for mobile phone, PC, PDA, Camcorder, and Digital Camera. Nevertheless, the potential of it is big. I have a BT phone and BT earphone and it's always sweet without wire dagling around you. I would only by BT enable phone when my T68i broke.

Actually, it's thinner by quite a noticeable margin (0.34" vs. 0.5"). It's the exact same thickness as a single half of an NR70.

Wow, that's as thin as my T415! That makes the TG50 a very attractive upgrade option. I have not wanted to give up the front pocket comfort level that the T415 provides.

Oh no!
There is such a thing as being TOO thin... Especially with Bluetooth enabled.
What kind of battery is in there?
I'd prefer an extra 1/4 inch of thickness in exchange for more battery life.
Now I'm worried. I'm soooo looking forward to the TG50.

Remember, the space occupied by the digitizer on the older T-series PDAs has been freed up. The keyboard takes up very little internal space.

Man, bring it on. I didn't realize how thin it was. Can't wait. How many weeks, three or four?

actually, according to palm info center (http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_story.asp?ID=5072), it's .64", which is thicker than the T665.
it's also 6.4 ounces, which is heavier (aka bulkier) than the SJ33, not to mention the T665 or the tungsten t. that said, it sure is purty.

That's with the flip cover. Do you have an NR70? Compare this pic with the bottom half of your PDA:
http://www.clieclub.jp/review/tg50/images/tg50_04_jpg.jpg
It doesn't get any thinner than that.
