Hi folks,
there is an awesome piece of software available, but nobody seems to notice (well, at least not on the PALM platform!:-( )

SKYPE is a VOIP (voice over IP) software, which enables Windows PC users to talk over the internet. Well, thatīs nothing new so far (AIM, MS messenger etc. ) BUT now there is a mobile version of SKYPE available! Imagine sitting at STARBUCKS and talk to a friend with your PALM PDA - how cool is that ?

Well, there is only one small problem - THERE IS NO PALM VERSION right now: The guys at SKYPE have choosen the Pocket PC (shock!) platform instead :-(

Iīm really astonished how low the interest seems to be for this GROUNDBREAKING PDA solution! IF YOU WANT TO TALK TO OTHER SKYPE USERS - LETīS BE HEARD - ACT!

I have a CLIE TH-55 and can only invite EVERY PALM user, to talk about SKYPE within their PALM community. They should visit the SKYPE message-board and show their interest for this product.
Iīm sure if the SKYPE guys realize how keen we are for this product, they will start to code something for the PALM platform ;-)

Start spreading the news!

P.S.: Did I mention itīs free of charge !!!!!

Damn! That GPhone is pretty awesome!! If the Palm version could call telephones like the PC version can, it would be perfect! Well... except for the fee to call telephones =\

I see a lot of people linking to the GPhone web page, but I have never heard of anyone that has used it. It is vapor, or a real product?

The real time encryption/decryption required would mean most palm devices are simply way too slow to allow secure VOIP to work properly...

What makes you think this? I have had no problems using VoIP clients on PocketPCs that are slower than a Palm Tungsten T/C. I don't see why any modern Palm device shouldn't be able to use VoIP. Pocket Tunes can decode MP3 streams in software on my TH55, and I wouldn't have thought that a typical G.723/8/9 codec wouldn't be any more CPU-intensive. The encoding might be a bit more complex, but not much.

As for security I'm not exactly sure what you mean. Most existing VoIP solutions don't have much application-level security, they just rely on the network. So for a Palm that would typically mean WEP.

All voice packets are decrypted/encrypted in real time so is secure by design, it should be more demanding than just simply decoding MP3's.

If and when they do release a palm version, my PDA is missing any sort of a microphone or audio input for just that, voice calls...

VERY GOOD POINT - Vaporware ;-)

I didnīt find any user either :-(

I still beg for SKYPE!

Here's the direct link to request Skype to support the Palm OS:

(Making it easy for lots of us to let them know we're interested!)

letīs hope...

Actually, I found it. It's available at http://www.gphoneonline.com
You have to sign up for a free account to download it though.
I tried calling from my UX50 to our iMac running Mac OS X with SJPhone on our local network and the sound was so choppy, it was pretty much unintelligible. I guess the UX50 doesn't have the horsepower needed to do VOIP :-(

wow, Gphone function with the UX50? :p Too bad it lacks the horse power, but I think I'll try it out though. :)

Like I said, the 123MHz Sony CPU is simply too weak to encrypt/decrypt a VOIP stream although you might wonna try downloading a program called lightspeed and then overclock your PDA's CPU to see if it makes any difference with this software... ;)

Um, I don't know where you are getting this from but VoIP does not necessarily mean secure. See http://vomit.xtdnet.nl/ for example :D

Lightspeed doesn't work with the Handheld Engine. I would have thought that any VoIP software for the UX50 or TH55 would have to take the HHE into account, but your best bet for PalmOS would probably be a Tungsten C.

Vomit won the Compendium Award for Worst Product Name of the Day. Something to be proud of.

:D

Whether it's secure or not depends how it's implemented and if it's configured correctly, having said that I doubt it would be much of a problem for certain agencies to decrypt the so called "unbreakable" encryption algorithms... ;)

I don't think something like Skype would be outside the capability of the Sony CLIE/ HHE. After all, regular WEP traffic is fine. Decoding mp3/Ogg Vorbis/etc. is also processor-intensive and the HHE is able to handle those just fine.

It would be nice to hear something from the actual PocketSkype/ Skype developers though.

I tried Gphone PC to Palm (TC) and choppy sound!!!, I tried PC to PC and choppy sound!!! I believe that is why Gphone will be out of the market in December!!! It was not the hardware on the TC, it was the software!!!

Also, that is why the TC has an audio-mic jack, it is designed for VoIP!!! Also, if the Skype PocketPC version requires a 400Mhz Xscale, the Palm hardware it is not an issue. I think it is a software-porting related problem.

You might want to give the following app a look:

http://www.taptarget.com/iphone.html

It is in a development stage, and you only can call to a mirror server that returns your packets, I installed the server in my home PC and called from a Hotspot and It worked fine!! Hope this guys develope something good with this!!!
