View Full Version : What do you use your Clie for?

I was talking to some friends I used to work with at a large PC manufacturer.  We are all with different companies now and all have various PDAs.  One is a road warrior and uses his to keep track of flight information and make reservations.  Another uses his to keep track of product inventory at his new business.  My days on the road are behind me, so I primarily use my Clie to stay organized and to keep up with my email.  This made me wonder about other uses people make of their PDA.  What do you use your Clie for?  Does anyone have any uses that may surprise the group?

Nothing surprising here, I think. Use it primarily to enter data from blueprints into filemaker mobile. Due Yesterday to keep track of schoolwork, iSilo for news and local movie listings.

These days I'm not using it for much...just don't have the drive I once did to get things accomplished...so no todo items and organizing for me lately.

I am using it more for reading these days. I have a few eBooks loaded into PalmReader, and I always sync Avantgo. Also have a few webpages saved within Plucker.

I also find myself using it for e-mail when I am away. Alot easier to carry with you for a quick out of town trip than a laptop, and easy to use with my Nokia 8390.

Oh, and play, I love to play with new apps and techniques within existing apps, so I do that a bunch.

Besides the regular PIM functions, I use it as an electronic journal with DayNotez and money management using Ultrasoft Money.

And playing MP3s, of course.

Use iSiloXC(the command line version of isilo's desktop application) to automatically download and convert The New York Times and BBC News' palm editions a bit before I wake up in the morning, and also movies.go.com for my zip code.

Great sites with lots of links to palm-ready sites: www.turcic.com

My number 1 use of my NR70V is as an organizer - calendar, to do list, address book, password keeper, etc. I also use the calculator. When I am out of the office, I use a spreadsheet & word processor, as well as retrieve my email (and read ClieSource, of course!). At night, I play some games.

Occasionally, I listen to MP3s. I tried to read a book, but found that I prefer turning pages.

And, since it still has the "wow, I didn't know PDAs could do that" factor, I use it to show off pictures and take client's pictures to attach to their addressbook listing.

Read news from AvantGo or Mobipocket updates, DateBk5 PIM items including extensive use of contacts references, a couple of games mostly Mahjongg and Takoshi, and taking notes at staff meetings. Oh yes, I also keep a few personal photos of family and friends to lift spirits, used as required.

I use it at work, I use it at home
I use it on trails where ever I roam
I use tinysheet, to calculate true
I use a sci-calculator too
I use the adress book every day
I use my agendus in every way
But writing I do, here and there
Word to go and I make a good pair
I use ultrasoft money to stay in the black
I upgraded to smartlist and never going back. :)
mp3s I play when I am bored
pictures for inspiration when I am floored. :)

Howdy,
My uses for my nr70v are a bit different. There's the reguler everyday tasks: To do list, date book, e-books, memos, and email.

But then...

I use the hi resolution screen for showing customers at Pow Wows photos of custom work (arts and crafts type work). Whenever I help put on small shows for schools or scouts, I hook up the clie to a small fm transmitter. Then I use the audio player to control brief bits of background music and voice-overs.

Still my favorite use is for practical jokes. Whenever kids ask what I'm holding then I flip up the camera and ask them how the heck they got in the machine. Favorite joke was when I used the audio player hooked up to my truck's radio to make a friend think that there was a village people marathon dedicated to him. He didn't see the clie under the seat.:D

I mainly use the following:
Date book to keep track of birthdays, appointments etc.
To do list (an to do list plus, which has the option of attaching pics and setting reminders)
Address (nice to have the picture option)
Document to go is wonderful, as I have all my costing information and sales figures with me.
One of my favourite programs is Handstory as it easily copies information from anywhere (I use it especially for webpages) into the different Palm applications (Address book, Memo, Doc...)
As I travel a lot , I read news and magazines on the go with Avantgo and have applications that convert currencies and measurements.. And I also have city guides, flight time tables etc with me wherever I go.
And I really appreciate the MP3 player - fantastic to have one small device that can make my journeys more bearable
How did I organize my (especially working) life prior to PDA???

I use DateBk5 primarily for my flight schedule, and Super Names for a relatively substantial list of names & contacts.

I use Avantgo to keep up with news & sports. I have a photo album as well w/ AcidImage. Some games, chess, bejeweled.

Also, I have Mobipocket, and am about half way thru Lord Of The Rings: The Return of the King.

After more consideration, it seems easier to list the things I don't do with my NR70V: watch movies, use it as a remote control, and beam info to other IR-equipped devices. I've used the music player, but not a lot.

I have my NR connected to my cell phone (Sprint LG5350) using a cable from www.thesupplynet.com The browser I'm using is Blazer, which is free to Sprint customers.

I've used Blazer on a Pocket PC machine and it's a pretty nifty browser for a PDA. Do use Sprint for your ISP dial-up service? Since I shifted back to Palm OS and my NR70V, I haven't hooked up with my cell phone. I'm thinking about trying Bluetooth, but that gets a little pricey by the time you add it to the Clie and the Motorola Timeport compared to doing what you did, connect the two with a cable.

Blazer?  I have a SprintPCS phone, too, but didn't know they offered Blazer for free.  Where did you find it?

It's on the web page where all of your stuff is (your plan, etc) There should be a download button on there.

Use my NR70V for the usual:
Calendar/Appointments
To Do List
Address Book
Travel Alarm clock
Calculator

But recently I use it most to show off pics of my new baby girl and 22-month old son to any and all takers!

I use mine for the standard stuff: appointment, todo, address book, ...

But the most time spent with the NR is as a book reader (MobiPocket, TealDoc, iSilo)

I started reading books on my HP100LX. It is so easy to carry books around, I have over 50MB on my MS (HarryPotter, Lord of the Ring - full-, The Shadow magazine, .....)

I love it

Okay.. This may freak some of you out..
but I use mine as a Personal Digital Assistant, to take the place of my old Day Planner..

Too Cool Huh?

No really I use it mainly for a ToDo list, Schedule Appointments for me and my wife, Phone Book, and to keep up with my Current events with avantgo. i also do keep daily logs with DaysNotes, but I don't use it as an MP3 Player device at all. I find my MiniDisc works out just too well to want to be limited with space on my Memory Stick.

Though the strangest thing I use my Clie for is as a night Light, I usually am the last one to bed, and so i dont wake up the wife when i go in I use my Clie to guide me through the bedroom.
