Cisco Ad

Just saw a cisco ad with NX70's in it. they made reference to two people in remote areas seeing each other for the first time. the clies had wifi cards attached...

it could have been that they were using the standard apps, clie camera and clie mail to mail pics to each other via pop3/wifi

i hope there's a webcam on the way...

Yes, the movie was called 'First to Die' and the Clie (NR or NX) made a guest appearance taking pictures at a crime scene.

To reggae, about a webcam app coming for the NX.

Well unless it is coming from Sony, it is not coming anytime soon.

I am sure you guys are not aware of this but all the cool features of the NX are restricted area for us 3rd party developers.

Yes that is right, SONY has not released - nor will they release - the necessary documentation to create those cool apps you guys all want.

Specifically the equivalent of the Capture Library that were used on the NR70V to control the builtin camera is not documented on the NX, and hence you cannot create any software titles that make use of the Camera --> No webcam app anytime soon.

Other things we cannot do because SONY will not release the developer documentation for it:

- Create apps that make use of the microphone.
- Create apps that plays SOUND! [ Yes, that is right. You cant play sound on the NX (!!!) unless you sign a NDA, and SONY is censoring which apps they think should be allowed to play sounds.
- Create MP3 playing apps.[ Either you use SONY´s MP3 library, but there is no documentation so you cant do that, or you use your own mp3 decoding software but you cant play sound because SONY will not let you sign the NDA since they only want their own MP3 app to be around, so you cant do that either. ]

If someone could tell me why SONY is doing this, bc I cant figure it out. I have more than 5 very cool projects for the CLIE that I can not create because of SONY is doing this. And one of them is the webcam app.

Or better yet, make them change their mind. Publish this at sites like clieplanet and brighthand ( Shaun, Ed are you guys reading this??) and make it a story.

cool apps i looked into developing for the nx until i looked at the API (that doesn't exist)

voice over IP using mic and headphones to create a VOIP cel-like phone when near and AP

The API's for the NR were available instantly from the release if I remember correctly. The NX have soon been around for 6 months.

I really would like to know why dont release the API's - it's there allright, SONY's engineers are using it to create the CLIE apps, so jsut release it allready. =/

My guess is in one of these 3 reasons:

1. SONY wants to control the apps that are available for the NX/NZ to make sure that their own apps are the coolest, most multimedia rich available. This could be to prevent the scenario where users dont want to upgrade to the latest CLIE bc they can allready do the things that the new CLIE can do with a 3rd party app on their old CLIE.

2. Some patent, license issue. [ MPEG4 licensing terms? ]

3. To upset CLIE users & developers just bc this is what SONY usually does.

I still dont understand why they are censoring the playing of sound on the NX/NZ. A Palm OS 5 machine and you cant play sound unless your app gets SONY´s blessing? Really weird...

#3 would just be a result of something.... not an actual intention of sony's. BTW, you say that you can add sounds to your app with "sony's blessing".... can you access MSA (mem stick audio/mp3) functions through the nda etc?
