OK.....

I've seen a lot of complaint on the TH55 board about the "delicate" flip cover and how much it costs to replace ($55, no stock from Sony). My question is this:

Has ANYONE actually succeeded in breaking their flip cover or scratching to the point that it needs replacement?

I am personally quite surprised at the durability so far..... :)

Best wishes,
Bawko

Um, no. Mine is A-OK. I like it a lot...really protects the screen when in conjunction with the Global Source case I have.

I still have the plastic film over the protector so no sign of scratches yet.

You can use the thin film cover as your screen protector and buy a cheap WriteBright or Belkin to protect the "NICE" transparent plastic cover. In fact my TH55 is covered all over with these cheap screen protector.

Now it is waterproof!

Is there really a plastic protective at the back? Mine seems to have one (its not as smooth as the front) But can't see the plastic.

I broke my cover after trying to get it off by unscrewing it and using the special small screwdriver that I bought especially for it. The screws were on extremely tight and I was only able to remove the screw entirely from one side and loosened only the other side. In the end, since I was determined to remove the entire cover, I wiggled it and it cracked off eventually. Afterwards iot was impossible to screw back on. I have since ordered a replacement from Sony, but have yet to receive it. It's been almost a month now.
In the meantime, I was able to finagle a new cover from Circuit City where I bought my TH55. They gave me the one from their display model. (Actually, very nice of the Mananger at that store to do this for me). Of course the cover from their display model had a few scratches on the inside part of the cover, but it was better than nothing while I'm still waiting for mine from Sony.
From another post I read that a user was able to scratch off the backing from the inside part of the flip cover.

Ditto for me too, I haven't even work the plastic cover off mine nor has it started pealing off. I love the cover on this Clie I have no idea why anyone would want to remove it and put those plugs in place of it. I guess you just have to hate the covers on units like this.

I really like the flip cover. I have had mine for about two weeks now and have no scratches or breaks. I use the STORIX compact drive case as my slip case and this seems to keep it nice and protected in my pocket. I especially like the flip cover closed while reading ebooks at night.

I had remove the protection plastic that protect the flip for more than 2 weeks and there is no scratch at all.

It is much more nicer without the plastic sheet on it. I not sure the rest of you of handling the clie but I always put inside my pant or inside a slot in my leather bag without any problem at all.

If there might be a scratch in future due to carelessness, I rather the screen flip have it than on my LCD screen itself.

I really enjoy the superior Sony LCD screen without any protection. For those who rather to protect the screen, they will lost the great LCD visual appearance as well as sensitive of the graffitti.

My flip cover is starting to show wear on the inside where it rubs against the metallic fishsh frame around the screen, but other than that, its perfect.

Like most people seem to be saying, I'd much rather scratches be on that, than on the screen itself, and it makes is look so sleek with it on there, less like the other PDAs on the market. I think its part of its uniqueness.

I'm interested to see how clear the fogged ones from GlobalSource are going to be, though I don't really like any of the colors they're offering.

I just came across this URL:

Might be of interest to TH55 users. I am using the TG50 myself; by choice because of the keyboard. I had a TH55 for a couple of weeks, and would have considered purchasing this cover if I decided to stay with the TH55.

My plastic sheet that covered the cover, so to speak, lasted about a month. I keep mine in a zippered case anyway. My cover doesn't have any scratches on it, thank goodness. I was considering putting contact paper on it, but haven't done it yet.

This one looks great. I wonder why they use the word translucent instead of transparent. I would think that 'fully translucent' would simply mean transparent <laugh>

Depending on how much I like the original cover, I might get this.

Thanks for the tip. I think a totally clear cover would be great. The smoky cover that comes with the TH55 looks cool, but it does cut down on the ability to read text through it.
