1-3 years? Did you go to school to study code or something? I hope this helps you...
- Programming for any OS is a challenge.
- SDK's are free.
- Not a lot of memory for your computer is needed.
- It really dont matter how fast your computer it.
- You can test your software on emulators via your computer.

Hi,
Well, from 1996-2002 I developed for PalmOS, on an IBM
Thinkpad 560! It had a Pentium-100, 24MB of RAM, and a
2.1GB hard drive.
I have exactly $0 invested in development tools! I primarily
use the "prc-tools" package, on LINUX, in conjunction with the
SDK 5.0 from Palm.
The "pose" package will allow you to emulate a real PalmOS
device, on your computer. There are similar offerings for
other operating systems as well. You will have to go to the
Palm site, and sign up (free) as a developer, in order to
legally obtain and use the (required) PalmOS ROM files.
Or, if you have a real device, there are tools to extract the OS
from the ROM, and save it on your computer.
In any case, welcome to PalmOS programming. Everyone had
to start at some point, so don't feel intimidated!

Hi,
I forgot to mention that there is a very useful tool called
"Pocket C", that allows you to develop right on the device!
I have not used it recently, but did experiment with it, and
it worked extremely well. There was a source code editor also,
but the name escapes me.
One drawback at the time, was that you would sometimes
have to bring the PalmOS API include files (.h files) over to
the device, as it was not feasible to have all of them their by
default.
When I last checked, it was free, and had a dedicated "yahoo" group.
Anyway, it came to mind, and I figured I'd pass it on...
