View Full Version : NX80V over PalmT3, right decision?
Next week I'm going to purchase a new pda. At first I decided to go with the Palm T3 (light weight, great screen). But after reading a lot of users' reviews over the internet about how unstable it is (besides the problem with the short battery life), I decided to look around a little bit more and decided on the Sony NX80V. Is it a good decision? I don't need Wi-Fi, etc. What worries me is the size and weight of the NX80V. Is it that heavy and clumpsy as some say?
I'd appreciate any comment about this. Thanx.

For what it offers (1.3 MP Camera, solid battery life, respectable processor), it doesn't really matter that it is that large. If you must put it in your front pocket though, there are smaller PDAs available.

I returned a T3 for the NX80. A decision I'm still thrilled I made today. I missed having a few programs like Audible Player, but Cliepets MCA2 program has solved those problems as well.

the Nx80 is everything the T3 is, with the exception of:
landscape
64MB ram (i think)
bluetooth
400Mhz CPU
The nx80 has nearly all standard api's, sound, camera, that makes it usable for nearly all palm programs (even the IR is being developed by noviiremote)
then there is the 1.3mp camera
wifi, (if you want)
CF slot (big for storage)
backlit keyboard
and even though it is only a 200mhz cpu, it does the job very well
i think 400mhz is excessive ( and leads to crappy battery life)
the nx80 has very very good battery life. don't let anyone else tell you differently. I can browse online using wifi card for 1.5hours, and battery goes down to 52%. After leaving it for a while, battery climbs back up to around 80%.
It is a VERY good unit.
and get jackflash if you want the increased "ram" space
it utilizes the rom (extra 15+ megs)

If you have a bluetooth phone then get the T|3. The days of the unconnected PDA are long since over. The NX80 is awesome, but at some point IRDA ain't gonna cut it. If you have a fancy bluetooth-enabled phone and some type of access plan (T-Zones, M-Mode) you would do best with the T|3. The landscape WebPro browser alone is worth the price of that device. Netfront portrait kinda sucks.
Sure Sony has a bluetooth memstick but it's awfully hard to find (ebay) and it's an extra expense (~$100).

I currently have both a NX80 and T3. Both are solid units. But I use the T3 more because of size. Battery life isn't a big issue for me because I use Lightspeed and clock down alot of the apps, which extends battery life. I get about 5 hrs continuous use with the screen set on 50% brightness. The screen on the NX80 is much brighter than the screen on the T3. At first, I thought that the NX80 was not that big until I got a leather case for it. When it is all said and done, it's all based on what you need.
Do you need a digital cam, blue tooth, compact flash memory, secure digital memory, sony memory stick, 16 mb or ram, 51 mb of ram, 200mhz processor, 400mhz processor, etc...
Both are good units. Good luck with chosing a unit.

I kinda agree if we're talking about NF3 as included with the NX80. I have an NX70 and I have went thru every version of NF starting from the NX70 to the current TH55's. The TH55's NF 3.1 is lightyears ahead of any previous version of NF. Browsing is very useable in terms of speed and rendering capability. I haven't used WebPro since the early days (when it was unprotected and could be used on non-Palm devices) but given what NF3.1 is, I would have to argue that NX80 makes for a credible browser.

Agreed. I'm unsure also why Sony would want to discontinue it.

My first PDA is a nx73v. I chose it mainly for the decuma imput, since I am not familiar with graffiti.
Since the T3 does not come with decumma, I consider it a big advantage.
Decumma realy recongnizes my hand writing, I find it a great pro and would never consider buying any PDA with Graffiti.
This however renders the keyboard rather useless!
I regret not buying the nx80v, for I use the camera to capture documents.
With a 1 MP camera I have been able to use an OCR with a documents picture.
Good Luck!
