Well, in October '03 I was lucky enough to pick up a UX-40. I could've gone with a UX-50, but since I had never heard of Wi-Fi, and not even of Bluetooth, I thought the less expensive the better ;). Now I have a whole Wi-Fi setup in my home, and no way to acess it with my Clie! I really don't want to sell my 40 on ebay and buy a 50, so I looked around and found this: a memory stick Wireless Lan card: http://www.mobileplanet.com/shopanywhere/product.asp?dept%5Fid=5040&pf%5Fid=MP730000&listing=1

Any experience with this product? Recomendations? Thanks!

Buy a -50, holmes. By the time you buy the peripherals for your -40, you will have spent almost as much, if not more, than a -50 costs.

Eat carrots. It sharpens your foresight.

I thought about getting this for my UX40 but once the WiFi stick is in the MS slot, I have no way of moving anything on or off the my MS using WiFi. I can surf the net, move files to and from my PC and hotsync with bluetooth .......no problems. I get over 300ft range and my UX40 was only $250.00 brand new from CompUSA. If WiFi was really a must for me...I'd switch to a 50.

AFAIK it's the only way to get WiFi on the UX40. While I agree that it would have been wiser in hindsight to get the UX50, for the moment your only options are getting the UX50, getting this card, or getting a BT AP or dongle for your home network. Keep in mind that buying a WLAN memstick now probably means that you'll have little use for it if you ever upgrade your PDA, and buying a UX50 now means running the risk of getting something that will soon be replaced. Selling the UX40 on ebay probably won't bring more than $300, and getting a UX50 will likely run $500, so the price difference between upgrading your current hardware and replacing it is significant.

Brighthand has a review of the LAN Memstick (http://www.brighthand.com/article/Wi-Fi_Memory_Stick_Review?site=Palm). That may help you make up your mind.

If it were me, I'd probably just use a BT dongle around the home ($20) and wait to upgrade the PDA until something significantly better comes along. If you're not using WiFi outside the house, I'd say there's little reason to spend $130 on the WLAN memstick.

I bought my UX-40 from Comp USA 2 weeks ago for only $299 and just got the WiFi Memory stick for it last week. As far as functionality - it works AWESOME! Just plug and play with my DLink Router. My friend also had an IMAC Airport Router, so I went up to his hous, typed in the MAC ID# and worked flawlessly!

The way I look at it is I bought a UX50 for only $419! The only downfall is that you can't use a memory stick while the WLAN is plugged in. But for my applications, it is not a problem.

If you are in the same boat as me, I would say go for it. I love mine!

I have a UX-40, and I just got the wlan memory stick, and a Linksys wireless router, I was online in seconds. Range is better than my friends UX-50 with built in wifi. Now I need the big battery.
