I can't seem to get this game to run, I have created a folder on the ms palm/programs/Scummvm/Monkey2

but I'm not sure what to enter for path: and game: when I run ScummVM

Also I'm not sure which files to upload from the game to the SCummvm/Monkey2 folder

Do I need to rename any files? I couldnt' find anyone else with problems with MonkeyIsland2, just wondering what I'm doing wrong.

Everytime the program tries to Initiate, I get a Fateal Alert:
StringMgr.c,Line:65,NULLstringpassed

what does this mean? help!

Exactly what it says: You past a NULL String to the program. Enter Monkey2 or ./Monkey for Path and it should work

Whoa Got it by entering
Path: Monkey2
Game:Monkey2

Looks great on my NR70V screen!!

Some questions: how do I exit the game? Do I have to go Menu-> Exit?
How the heck do I save? WHen I press Menu, I can enter a file to save under then I press save. Later nothing seems to happen.

too bad this is the only game I had, I think imma go buy the software package at LucasArts.

You are way ahead of me. I run a PDA gaming site and still cant seem to figure out what SCUMMVM is. :D

SCUMM stands for SCripting Utility for Maniac Mansion, which was as you might or might not know the engine behind the first LucasArts adventure. Various versions of this engine have been used in almost all LucasArts adventures. VM stands for Virtual Machine. Although this term is a little confusing since ScummVM is NO emulator but a script interpreter, it describes rather well what you can do with it: Play SCUMM engine based games on various platforms, including Windows, Linux, MacOS, WinCE (PPC) and now, thanx to Chrilith ( http://membres.lycos.fr/chrilith/ ) PalmOS as well.

Concerning the use of ScummVM: When you put your game files (.00x) directly in PALM/PROGRAMS/SCUMMVM/GAMES , then all you have to enter for path is "." (without quotation marks). About saving: You have to press ENTER after entering a file name: Just draw a / (starting at the top-right) onto your grafiti area after entering a name.

Thanks hansschmucker for everything, that SCUMMVM: restart thread was way too confusing to cycle through for my questions.

any way to skip the intro? It is sooo long. Also when you say just draw a "/" do you mean from the top of the screen down to your graffiti area or do you mean on the graffiti area where letters are input? thanks and sorry this is all so confusing for me.

About saving...doesnt seem like I can save, am I missing a file or something? I can press on a number, after pressing Menu-> then save. I can then enter a name, but upon pressing "enter" on my NR70v keyboard or upon drawing out "/" on my graffiti area, it exits the save screen. Then when I go back, I can't seem to find my saved file

Look into the README: skipping cutscenes and so on is covered by it

Its just the ScummVM Restart is SO confusing...also, pls tell me how I can load it on my palm..thanks :)

You have to either: 1) already have the game or 2) purchase it online from Lucasarts.

To load on your palm, simply use MSImport to load the game files into the game folder on your Memory Stick. Palm/programs/Scummvm/GameFolder

Just finished Sam ans Max wthout a single crash! Now, that's what I call stable!

I just tried the latest ScummVM an my Tungsten TT, and I can say that most games work until you enter a different room, when the PDA either resets or gives a fatal exception error.
But it seems fast and responsive nonetheless :)

Keep up the good work!

Please register, I don't mind having TT or even PPC users around, but I just want to know who I talk to. Talking to "Unregistered" is quite unpleasent in my opinion.

Concerning ScummVM and the TT: Problem is, the TT has less heap (that's what RAM would be on your PC) then an average Clié and the errors occur when ScummVM tries to write to those memory areas that are available on Clié, but not on TT.

Last thing.... Uhm, now I've got the save problem as well. ScummVM saves correctly and I can even load if I specify the slot in the launcher, but the ingame menue just doesn't show anything and choosing something has no effect. I tried various savegame names generally consisting of nothing more then alpha-numeric characters, but no success so far. Maybe the ingame menue has not been updated with the .savegame change so far?

Oh and just a general advice for all ScummVM gamers: most games support selecting an action by typing in the first letter. You write a letter onto your grafitti area and see what happens. In Samnmax this means

w for walk to
p for pick up
l for look at
u for use
t for talk to
i for inventory

This is strange, i didn't have this problem... can you remember me what is your device and where is located your game ? (Perhaps i need to implement a unqiue SAVED folder for saved game ...)

thanks for your help ( especially for the help given to all those people asking how to use scummvm );)

Device: NX70V OS5.0 4.2MB. Clean Boot

I used to keep my games directly in PALM/PROGRAMS/SCUMMVM/GAMES/ which seems to be the cause of the problem. Now, I keep them in PALM/PROGRAMS/SCUMMVM/GAMES/GameName, which eliminates the problem. A unique save folder would still be a great idea.

Oh, and does anybody else experience a lockup during dott's intro sequence, after the car jumped over two hills? Also, the save bug has reappeared in dott now (In PALM/PROGRAMS/SCUMMVM/GAMES/TENTACLE) .

I'm feeling like a Ghostbuster. Trying to catch this bug wherever it may appear =)

Also, there's a problem with Loom, which uses the current CDDA position to determine if a string has been shown long enough or not. This problem doesn't exist with the win version, but since there's no CDDA on PalmOS, some strings are only shown for a fraction of a second. Maybe a hard-coded table, or a simple string length counter might help.

I hope you don't think I'm ungratefull, because I'm asking for so much... I really, really appreciate what you do and don't take my posts as complains, take them as suggestions, because that's the way I think of them.

Another general hint for all Scumm gamers: You can skip a line of dialog each, by drawing two dots onto the grafity area

Hi, still some questions about TT vs Clie. I didn't know there were such significant differences... are they HW or SW based, and can they easily be circumvented? Just wondering if a recompile of ScummVM with different options is sufficient or if some heavier modifications are necessary.

hansschmucker
02-25-2003, 12:38 PM
A recompile probably won't do.... the games will need a totally different menagement since right now all they use is the extended heap. To emulate that extended heap on a TT, we would have to use something like virtual memory, where a file saves what doesn't fit into the heap anymore

No problems getting it here, so I've saved a copy to http://hansschmucker.no-ip.biz/ScummVM_0.2.97_030221_preview.zip
THIS IS NOT MEANT AS A MIRROR PAGE, BUT INSTEAD FOR PEOPLE HAVING TROUBLE GETTING FILES FROM LYCOS.

Thanks, got it from your link.

I have the two Monkey island titles. The second locks when I try to save a game and the first locks during the second or third cut scene. Anyone got any further?

This is on an NX70 by the way.

hansschmucker

Saving is still a little buggy. I guess the reason why I could finish SanmMax without a single crash was, that the save function didn't work.
About crashes in cutscenes. Just skip the cutscene by pressing home

The titles start and if I try to skip them at any point it starts to draw the first scene (with the blind 'lookout' on top of the hill) and locks.

Couple of other questions:

Is it possible to have more than one game entry on the menu? I can only edit or delete a single entry, can't see how to add another one.

Oh and I take it sound isn't implemented yet?

hansschmucker

Just hit edit without anything selected. To deselect, draw a line from the topmost entry to the bar above

Step 1 Download ScummVM for Clie
Step 2 Read the ScummVM Documentation
Step 3 Read the Threads if you have problems
Step 4 Post here if you still can not solve the prob

I'm surprised it doesn't use a VM system already; how much heap does it need?

glad I'm not the only one trying to figure that out. I have been reading through all the posts, but must have missed the "how to" and "what".

Any gurus, lend a hand??

I also am trying to solve the problem of how to save the game in Scrumm.

I have a sony clie and put the game into
/palm/programs/scummvm/games/indy4

and if i try to save the game with the enter stroke, the menu save dissapears and i am back in the game. If I go back to menu and look into the load menu, i can not find anything back in this menu.

I am working with version 2.97 of scumm

chrilith

1. tap on the Menu button
2. tap on the Save button
3. enter the name
4. double tap the entered name

This is the same as saving under windows version

Hi Chrilith,

Would it be possible to reassign keys? The reason I'm asking is because I'm trying this on a Sony Clie TG50 and the TG50 does not have a silkscreen, hence stuff like Menu, Quit and other functions activated at the silkscreen does not work for the TG50. Any chance of remmaping to the hardkeys (datebook etc) instead? I find using the hardkeys as mouse movements a bit wierd cos it's too slow, so having mouse features is not so important, right?

The stylus does the "mouse" job well enough.

I cant save either.

I have:
Clie T665c
128 Mb MS
Day of the tentacle saved in /palm/programs/scummvm/games/dott
ScummVM v0.2.97

I hit the menu key
I press save
I select a number
I write a name (when doing this, letters are entered twice)
I double click the name
The game returns to play

When I press the menu again, the game is nowhere to be found.

Thanks for your help hansschmucker and chrilith - I got DOTT to work on my SJ30! Looks fantastic..
However,
1) I still can't save. Double tap on the name doesn't help, "Enter" stroke doesn't help either.
2) It is rather slow and jerky, especially during graphic intensive scenes. Afterburner acceleration to 50 MHz doesn't seem to help at all...

Tovilin

Well, I have tried everything and I still can't save.

One thing I noticed is that files named tentacletentacle.s01, ...s02, ....s03 etc. are saved in scummvm/games/ when I save inside the game, even though the game is in scummvm/games/tentacle/.

Is this were they are supposed to be? Or are they supposed to be saved in the same location as the game? Maybe this is why they cant be found by the game....

Thanks for the help. I really want to play but if I cant save, its not worth it.
