Well... here is the 0.1 version... It doesn't work with everything yet, and you need to soft reset to rotate the screen but it does work in some capacity. If you want to test it for me to see which programs work and which don't, give me your email address and I will send you a zip file with the patch and a readme telling you where to install it. I hope to fix the soft reset issue by next week some time. Enjoy,

> Any further progress on the lanscape version?

I've given up on it (other than to get the screen shots for bragging rights ;-).
The driver-level rotation (using components from PalmOne) is relatively easy to use on an individual app basis (ignoring copyright issues). Making the PDA experience complete is a lot of work, with very little gain IMHO.
See the discussion on page 10 of the longer thread, it does a good job summarizing the problems involved

Mmmmh,

is there -- in a threaded environment like a forum -- ever an end to April 1st? Isn't it foolish enough to sit here at 00:18 CEST and think about landscape mode on my TH55 any day of the year (but then: somehow it is attractive...) Isn't it great to be a believer in... landscape mode?

Thanks Sony, for letting us have so much fun with landscape mode issues :-(

Based on Cliepet's assessment it is quite possible the guy made it only for one app and showed it at CeBIT just to tease unsuspecting people.

Or, maybe a market research to see how people would react to it and provide Sony with feedback saying: "customers want landscape in the TH55, let's do it".... (daydreaming, of course...) :p

just a thought
If we can make certain programs landscape, can we use the capabilities of codediver to make it hires+? As I understand that codediver was developed for exactly this reason. to enable hires+ display for apps that was not 'updated' for this.

> is it easy to just get one app going landscape?

As a user, no.
As a developer, yes.

The easy way is to use a lower level library that ships with the PalmOne Tungsten T3.
[[ I'm not sure if it is a PalmOne (hardware company) or PalmSource (software company) invention ]]
The developer could write one of their own (or just build the features into their program).

REGARDLESS: this is not an easy task.
[but it is much easier than making the entire PDA handle landscape]

> ...And also a landscape movie player

BTW: The approach used (in the T3) would not work well for a movie player.
It is slow because it copies the images twice (once off screen, then rotated on screen)

A much better solution is to have the movie player do the rotation directly (which most already do, including the built-in movie player)

> All we need is fullscreen landscape Netfront. ...

Let me clarify, this is a reasonable amount of work for the developer of the Netfront program themselves ! (ie. those who have the source code, not a 3rd party)

Based on past discussions, my guess is they aren't interested in doing the work, but who knows...

Maverik
04-04-2004, 08:53 PM
Well they should be, because the internet wasn't made for portrait browsing, it was designed for landscape style viewing.

krypticide
04-05-2004, 12:19 AM
I don't know if I agree with that...I prefer reading text down, not left and right. If it goes too far left and right, it strains the eyes. I'd say the solution is a bump up to 640 x 480, not landscape.

madmaxmedia
04-05-2004, 12:38 AM
For ebooks and simple HTML pages, I agree with you.

The problem is with page layout, not text. Web pages are designed with landscape displays in mind, you often have multi-column layouts that take up a lot of available space.

krypticide
04-05-2004, 07:37 AM
That's true. I've found myself using the single column mode in NetFront, and for most websites it works well.

In case you haven't heard, you can try www.pdaportal.com for PDA-friendly sites.

Hi Rossi01

The Kinoma people have release their latest version of Kinoma Producer 2.2 witch can give landscape mode to movies in TH55. Check it out at www.kinoma.com

Also another idea to get landscape mode using the Netfront (hopping of course) would be to ask very nicely the people at www.pdaportal.com to make an option for this in their website. Here's their email: author@pdaportal.com

Or try to get the Netfront's email and get to send them nice emails requesting landscape mode. ;)

Ok Guys!

I found the email for the developer of NetFront 3.1, I also found that they don't support Clié users, but we really don't have a problem with their software do we? What we want to tell them is more like a suggestion.

Here's what I wrote to them, maybe some of you would get a better idea on what to say to them: " Hi Guys,

I know you don't support Clié owners using Netfront 3.1, but I don't really have a problem with your software, what I have is a suggestion, please make an update to allow us to have landscape mode in your software.

Please consider this option, Clié and Netfront lovers everywhere would really appreciated."

Please don't use the same text, I know mine is not the very best, but maybe if they see how many people want this on their Netfront browsers... who knows they might make an update.

The company that makes NetFront is called ACCESS, their email is: netfront@access-us-inc.com

i think a better way to go is to write this to support@opera.com - i'm quite sure they are working on a palm verison of their browser, so they are in the middle of the developement process..

and with their small screen rendering technology it will be a better browser than everything on the market so far anyway. to preview small screen rendering download a copy of the windows version, load a page and press Shift-F11..

Here is what I sent to netfront (sensitive info removed):

Hello,

My name is Maverik and I own a Sony Clié TH55. It came bundled with Netfront 3.1 and although I notice on your website that you do not offer support for Sony Clié users, I come to you with a suggestion, I am not looking for support.

As you are well aware, the orientation of almost all pocket computer devices on the market is portrait. This is quite the stumbling block when PDA users attempt to visit any website via their PDA when almost all websites are designed with the landscape orientation in mind. I think a simple solution to this would be to offer a landscape option for those of us with PDAs that have 320x480 resolution screens or higher.

I know this may not be as simple as I make it sound, as I have done low-level programming and can only imagine the intricacies of your program, but I have seen other Palm software that supports landscape viewing, and not just on PalmOne's T | 3, on which PalmOne has offered direct landscape support. Many programs such as Warfare Incorporated, MobiPocket, and Kinoma Movie Player - among others, support landscape viewing on Sony and PalmOne devices alike.

I think that this kind of option would make many people happy, including myself, and in the long run would be beneficial to your company.

Please consider my suggestion seriously, as I speak not only for myself, but for many PDA users out there.

Thank you,
Maverik

No, they haven't responded yet. Still waiting. As for where they say they don't support Clié, check it out here: http://www.access-us-inc.com/contact.html

NetFront For Sony CLIE
If you are using NetFront with a Sony CLIE and you have support questions please contact Sony directly at the address listed below. Please note that ACCESS does not provide direct support for NetFront for Sony CLIE.

Now, as for why? I have no idea. Maybe because Sony only liscensed the program to distribute it on the CLIE lineup, not the whole package like support etc. I don't really know.

One thing that occured to me after using the TH55 for web browsing for a while is that I use the writing area quite often. If the landscape mode does not have a "landscape" (or something similar) area to input characters I think it negates itself. It would be kind of cumbersome going back and forth each time I wanted to input any text.

I think it works fine for the UX because it can use the keyboard. Or another option would be using a keyboard to navigate the web using the TH in landscape. This also does not work with me. But someone else might like it.

Just my 2cents...
