Why do 30K jpegs become 300k in ram when using zlauncher is it because they become bitmaps when you use them?

Yes.
Be a little patient. The new ZL beta now compresses backimages considerably. I have a couple that compress down to as little as 12k, while in use.. The compression varies according to the amount of detail in the image.

Excellent thanks for that.

it is the 'size' of the image and not the .jpg size itself. If you took the same '30k .jpg' image and it was a 800k .bmp ... it should still work out to be 300k for a background pic.
Sebring is right .... that ZL is in the works for 'compressing' the background images. From what I know it is 'similar' to other compressions on color matching etc. If you take a 100kb high quality .jpg image... you might get some compression or less compression depending on the colors used ... etc.
From what I also have heard .... the 'compressed images' used by ZL would warrent a PDA which has a little faster cpu. I'm sure this is being worked on ... but to display the 'compressed image'... it is constantly re-reading the image-file and re-freshing background display. I'm not sure how true that is ... or not but I have heard that one might want to use this with higher-end PDAs.
Lastly ... Festus440 has developed his ZLBC (ZLauncher Background Converter). He has released a new version of it which now has an option to 'compress' the images which ZL 4.1 can now read. So........ You can already benefit from the use of 'compressed background images' for ZLauncher by using ZLBC and converting your own .jpg or .bmp images or even current .pdb images into a 'compressed' format.

As for performance, I don't notice any slowdown, using compression, on my NX80. ZL does contain a warning, when you select compression, that it could result in slower performance on a68k devices( read older 66 or less mhz processors on OS4 devices). I had already sold my NR before I received this beta, so I didn't have a chance to test it.

I hear ya there Sebring. I have tested out some 'compressed' .pdbs on my NZ ... and can't tell the difference. But then again I know I'm running a 'decent' CPU. I know ZL made 'enhancements' in it's application for slower CPUs (such as the 66mhz and slower processors) to be able to run ZL faster..... I would hope they do the same with compressed images for devices a little slower in the CPU department. :)
