View Full Version : Opinion Thread: Next NX

I have been thinking very hard about what I want to get next. The bluetooth built into the NZ90 and TG50 have gotten me very excited about the direction Sony is going. I feel that Bluetooth is a very exciting technology, and I want to hop on the bandwagon as soon as possible. Integrating my cell phone and PDA together is something I have been looking forward to every since the Visor Phone temped me two years ago. With the current price cuts of the Bluetooth MS (under $150 now??!) I am tempted to go ahead and get it for my NX. However, without my 128meg MS my NX is just about limited to pure PIM functions. I like how the TG50 looks, but the thought of parting with my still camera, video camera, and Hires+ screen in my NX causes too much pain. I came to a personal revelation the other day.

Right now, my dream device is a NX with built in bluetooth and 32meg of RAM.

That's it. No 3megapixel camera. No swappable batteries, no new form factor. The NX has far surpased my expectations. I have no problems with battery life what-so-ever. The size of the unit has not really been a problem. I'd love to have a thinner handheld, but not at the price of the 320x480 screen. I also feel like Sony would not put a camera in a non-clamshell unit. I don't really have a rational reason to think so, it is just a hunch I have. Even though I don't use the WiFi slot, I wouldn't mind if it stayed there. I know there are many people putting the WiFi to use, and I'd love to have the option.

So Sony is rumored to have the next version of the NX out in April right? I would just love to see the same case, same camera, but with built in Bluetooth running OS5 and 32meg of RAM (I'd even take 64..). PalmSource has said that the version of OS5 that was sent to Sony does not support more than 16meg, but it is possible to hack it to support more. So if Sony's going to throw 5.2 onto the next NX, why not hack the memory while they are hacking the heck out of it to add things like Clie Sound, Hires+, Jogdial, thumb board, and MS support. These are all things that lack a standard PalmSource API already, so is it soo much extra work to add more RAM?

Of course, almost all of my desires would be solved if we could get Bluetooth CompactFlash drivers...

What are everyone's thoughts?

32mb of RAM? It will take forever to backup my Clie:D!

BTW, Sony is going to keep you hungry, so you keep buying.

Think about it!

LOL. good thread.

n2ifp- I'd rather have 32 mb and take twice as long to back up than the *cough* 11 *cough* takes to back up. wouldnt you?

also, n2ipf, can you read my thread that is titles something like I need help, a few questions. please. i have seen your posts and you seem to know a lot about the pda.

also, i dont know if bluetooth will be included on the next handheld, but we may start to see a limited operablity with third party CF products. Maybe sony will authorize a few.....never know

I have to agree that the NX is a great form factor and I think my next machine will be much like the one you mention Ocell. I would like to have bluetooth, but I would also have to get a phone that supports it. I think it would be great if they integrated Wi-Fi, and maybe even Bluetooth also. A minor thing, but I would also like to see the buttons that the NZ has under the screen on tablet mode on an NX. Other than that I want my next machine to have 32-64MB RAM and possibly even a 400MHz processor. That would definatly get me to fork over some more cash.:)

Oh, and if they integrate the Wi-Fi, they should ditch the CF slot and add a second MS slot. Right now I have one MS for apps and data that is almost always in the slot, and another one for MP3's and video. That one is only in use once in a while. I wish I could keep on stick in at all times and could swap out other sticks with less important functions like music and stuff.

Sounds like a great idea to me! I don't mind sticking with memory sticks.

Dual slots would be nice. Then we could use things like the BluetoothMS and still have memory. But I seriously do not want to settle for anything other than built-in bluetooth.

I noticed on the Japanese Sony site that the NZ has taken the place of the NX. So either there is a new NX to be announced sooner than we think, or the NZ is the CLIE N-series line.

i dobt they ever add built in wifi, but can be wrong...mainly because they need to sell those $150 wifi cards..dont they?

but that would be awesome to have built in wifi and built in BT..right now I am really loving the BT on my NZ90, acutally use it more then my wifi card, maybe because it uses a lot less battery

Tell you what. These are the features (including hardware and software) I am looking for my next NX:

1) 32Mb RAM.
2) Equipped with the latest Intel XScale processor code named Bulverde.
3) Built-in Wifi and Bluetooth. Hence, Casing will be the same as NR.
4) Picsel Viewer and Picsel Browser included.
5) Dual MS Slots. One for storage and one for other MS Modules like GPS, FM Tuner, TV Tuner, Fingerprint etc. etc.
6) Camera with Flash but should resemble the NR or NX camera module.
7) Enhanced application launcher with options for background image and skins.
8) Full Featured ala McFile utility and ACID image viewer. Sony, do something on Clie Viewer.
9) External Battery (that's on NZ already).
10) no more HUMP, Please!
11) Many more...
12) BTW, should come standard with an MS Pro - 256 MB (hehe).

I was at my COMP USA today fingerprinting a NZ. I'll take everthing the peson above asked for if you integrate a GMSR cell phone like the Palm TT W. That way I'll only need one thing in my pocket. Imagine

1) PDA
2) Digital Camera
3) Cell Phone

One unit. The above would allow me to stream video to any ably equipped receiver, that would be Nirvanna.

Imagine if James T. Kirk was to come to our time and see what we've got, he'd be leaning over our shoulders asking how Kinoma Viewer works, and if it were possible for babes to attach video's when they called ;-)

Yes, I have seen your thread and I even answered it. I know just enough to be dangerous:D!

I'll take anything Sony can give us. The truth is, they want to keep selling PDA's and making money. Each new model maybe will have an additional feature or two, just to get you to buy it. I was just being humorous with the memory thing, it's a long story:).

actually, the nz90 has built in bluetooth, so sony is finally coming out of the stone age

That's what put all of these thoughts into my head. Both the NZ and the future TG50 have built in bluetooth. The TG50 is so slim, I'm sure they could fit the BlueTooth circuitry into the NX case.

yeah, but until then, i might just buy myself a bluetooth card for the memory stick slot!

I disagree. Sony has already stated (off the record I'm sure) that there should be a new model in the NX line - around April I believe. The NZ does not replace the NX, but rather fills a very high end market.

Right! The NZ only validated the continued support for the NX and did not obsolete it.

I can't see a need for more speed the NX is really fast. I cna see a need for the application buttons on the side and not on the end or always hidden.

The next NX needs a built in harddrive like on those MP3 players (ipod, etc). I wouldn't care if it was the size of an NZ if it had a 20gb harddrive built in!

The TG50 isn't thin -- it's THIN. Just imagine a PDA the size of the keyboard half of an NR, but not as long. SAME thickness (or 'thinness' ;)). THAT'S a TG50. Amazing.

I would like to see built-in bluetooth or WiFi and 32 MB built-in, but what I would really like to see is better video recording capability.

Right now, the NX (and NZ) machines can record 160x112 MPEG-4 video, at 15 fps. I'd love to see that doubled to 320x240, or something similar.

Eventually, I want full 640x480 30 fps, but I'm willing to get there in steps.

I'm using the video recording feature, even though I didn't think I would. It would be great if I could record video in higher res than I can now.
