I was looking into getting a new cell phone, and I was thinking about getting one with an infrared port. What can I do with one and my T665? What's a good model with an infrared port? Thanks in advance :D

With IR you can surf the web, check email, chat in (irc, aim, yim, icq), and call people on your phone using the address book in your palm.

Nokia has a lot of IR cell phones, I'd just pick up the cheapest one that supports it, and of corse the network (GSM?) that supports web browsing.

So do all Nokia phones with infrared support Palm OS data? Is there some kind of special software that I need?

I Believe any infared phone will work. You just need a data package with your cell compnay in order to surf the web, check email, etc.

Before you do this, make *absolutely sure* that the IR port actually *works*. I bought a Nokia 6120 a couple of years ago, largely because the IR port seemed like a possibly great tool -- but it turned out that the port on that model is purely decorative on the version available in the US market. Doh! (Too bad, too -- otherwise the phone is awesome -- I still use it happily...)

I think that for more recent Nokias, if they have an IR port then it'll actually work, but make sure before you buy. Grill the salesperson, and after you figure out that they aren't sure (they never seem to be, or the make up an answer and stick with it unconvincingly) look it up on Nokia's site. They have manuals for most models online, and you can send them emails through the site as well.

In the end, at this point, Bluetooth might be more interesting than IR anyway -- you don't have to point the ports at each other, lots of devices are starting to sprout Bluetooth support, etc.

The Sony Ericsson T68i has both an IR port and integrated Bluetooth. This gives you flexibility for connecting via Bluetooth in the future if you want.

About those sales reps. Don't let them ask someone else, when I did, BOTH of them lied. Knowingly I believe.
