Hi:
How's going for everybody? And how's going for all the TH and UX lucky bastards, I mean friends.
I want to get either a TH 55 or a UX 40. I wonder which one is better or easier to use? I been to Bestbuy a lot just to test both units. I love both units, they all look and work very well.
Please and Please leave any suggestions and ideas or opinions. It is just for fun and for a good reference too.
Thanks a lot.
Ming
Have a good one.

Get the TH55. And no, no details or explanations. Just get it. A winner is you. Next caller.

TH55? Really? Thanks for the replay and opinion.
But I found that UX 50/40 really cool. I thought it would be kinda thick and bulky, but actually it is quite small.
I really really like the big screen on TH 55, so nice. I wonder how good or bad is the new Clie Organizer, I have not yet tried it. I am happy with my regular palm Calender/Schedule. I do not like the camera on TH55, kinda werid. I prefer UX's camera better.
Ming
The only difference between the TH and UX50 is the screen size and Cile Orginizer. If that doesnt matter, the UX is better.

Oh, okay. Well.. I change my mind, then. Get the UX40 (if you can do without WiFi). :) I was just going off your signature, which says you've been dreaming about the TH55.;)
The UX50 comes with Bluetooth too. Only the TH55/E has Bluetooth.

God. I remember when I first found out the TH55/U didn't have Bluetooth...

Hey man, The greatest thing I like about TH55, is its big screen. I been watching the NX, NZ series and been giving a lot thoughts on it. But I hate those cameras, that is no point for me to have a camera on my clie anyway, all i want is a big screen and wifi and mp3. I hope there is a non camera verison which will be cheaper for me. Just a thought.

Well simply answer this and you'll find out :)
Do you need thumboard, do you prefer landscape? If so, then the UX is for you
Need bigger screen? Longer battery life? the Clie Organizer? If so then the TH is for you, thats bout the only diffrence between the two units.
I came from the UX and went to the TH and have to say, I do miss the thumboard but decuma has been a great replacement. I haven't regretted the choice of getting the TH.

if you need the bluetooth and wifi get the UX50
i like the UX50 cuz its small and compact, i use it mostly for instant messenging and text messaging through my bluetooth phone.
I like the TH55 too but i need the keyboard so i cant do the switch.
you cant forget the other hardware aspects, some peopler like the thumbboard, some like writing with the stylus better.
the keyboard with dual wireless wasa why i got the UX50, i upgraded from my NX70 which i used in tablet mode most of the time. the keyboard was so much better for me on the UX50.
hope this helps.

You guys UX users and TH users are too nice to each other. How come none of the TH users say sth bad about UX models? It is a forum and topic which involving ideas and opinions on both TH and UX models. More opinions will be more fun, and mostly more helpful for ppl who interested in both models.

These machines cost $400 - $600. The reason none of us crap on the other camp is because we probably haven't HAD the other one, lol. We can't really say.

hahaha JK
I just need a thumboard and nothing beats the one on the UX50.
whenever I need to take a quick note, I would hate the feeling of having to use graffiti or Decuma since it's so much faster typing with the thumboard

Let me clear myself, I do not want a flame war.
I want to say thank you to all of you. Ur opinions are great. I can see myself with a TH55 sometimes soon. (After i save up for the it first)

uh not to burst your htought bubble.. but i've read through a lot of the threads here and there have been complaints about the UX.. not to mention if you go to http://www.sony.jp/CLIE/index_pc.html i'm not an expert at reading jap but just from looking at hte pictures.. its seems sony is planning to pull the plug on the UX.. if you've got money to burn and can wait a couple months / a season - wait till summer when the palm os 6 pops up and we (i hope) should see some updates from sony's product line.. btw dont quote me on this..
good luck with ur purchase

From my limited knowledge of japanese and chinese charators, they still list the UX as current model. JP market still posting TJ 25, 37, TH 55, and UX 50, and NX 80 for Feb 2004
I like the way UX comes with a 'thumb pad" and wifi, so I can easier AIM while at school and work. But the price is still too high.
I found some selling TH55 for less than $340 pluse around $10 S&H. I wish there is a non-bluetooth version UX 50 ( maybe called UX 45. hehe). That will be cool.
I wonder anybody using TH55 and AIM? How well that works?
Leave some opinions if you have experience with AIM and Clie.

only 1 complaint about the UX.
THE BATTERY!!!!!!!
ugh! this goes to 75% after being data imported into my pc for about 20 mins.
barely lasts a whole day before needing a recharge - fix the battery and you hve a winner
oh and some more RAM - keep the internal MS but add more RAM so we can use the internal MS as an MS

does it sell good now? reasonably - the UX market is small and i think that if 50% them did not buy MSs again that would not worry sony much vs if the rest of the MS market stopped.

It's not selling that good now? I wouldn't really know but if u get Sony products, you can have all kinds of expansion cards you want and wish for, as long as it's a MS! :D

so including more RAM is not going to stop MS's being sold - i would like to see you put an MP3 into internal RAM on a fresh OOTB machine

Ok I guess we still need the MS for mp3 to work with PDA. But you were saying that you wish to use the internal MS as your MS, so can't that support mp3 files? I take it MS meaning Memory Stick, be it external or internal. Our normal RAM & ROM aren't considered as internal MS, rite?
haomin
03-30-2004, 07:31 PM
I am confused too, fssia. I agree. I know UX has internal memory for storage, not sure it could store MP3s to play with Clie Audio player. I thought internal memory (RAM) only can take .prc or .pdb files.
Let me know if u guys have any ideas.
Karim
03-30-2004, 07:58 PM
I'm pretty sure the UX's internal memory that you are referring to (29MB, right?) can store and use MP3s or any other filetype for that matter.
Bionic Antboy
03-30-2004, 08:19 PM
Yep, the internal 29Mb is considered an "internal MS", in that it uses the same VFS (Virtual File System) as a Memory Stick. I can hold any type of file.
Sony included software with the UX also use this 29Mb as a place to launch apps from (AliasExt I think). Read times to this internal MS strike me as around 1Mb/sec, so the only things that don't load fast are HUGE games and maps.
The other REALLY cool feature of the UX is the additional 16Mb backup, so even if the battery dies, or a nasty app is messing with your system, you can just do a restore from backup, and you're good to go.
Those features, and the excellent keyboard, are what really sold me on the UX. Mind you, I've been waiting for Sony to make something like the TH for a long time, but for me, the keyboard is almost mandatory now. :)

I like the UX that i have.
that built-in backup is a life saver
i just want more RAM (and a bigger backup FlashRAM for it aswell)
keep the internal MS the same cause if you can only store 29MB inevitably people will want more - hence MStick sales.
oh an OOTB - Out Of The Box

Oic. I totally forgot the UX specs. Yeah ok now I get what benixau's internal MS meant. Btw, just read on the classified (http://www.cliesource.com/classifieds/detail.php?cat=10&de=1169) that someone got his SJ33 upgraded professionally by RunPDA to 32MB. Wow, I wish I can have mine upgraded too! What or who is RunPDA?

same here KB is a major selling point
also:
get a TH55 w/Wifi only = 4 weeks
get a UX40 w/BT* only = 1 week
*I use a lot and WiFi is a nicety to me
hmmmmmm :D

Hmm, let's see...a UX40 costs $350 USD, and the tongue depressor (oops, I mean the Wi-Fi MS) costs $130 USD...that's less than the UX50 costs and I will get BETTER RANGE from the external antenna setup.
Sounds like a deal to me. The TH55 is nice, but I love the form factor of the UX.

Considering that the price difference between a UX40 with WiFi stick and a UX50 is a whopping $20, I prefer not having to worry about a bulky antenna, or swapping it out for playing MP3s/videos.
I'm an all-in-one convenience kind of guy wherever possible. :)

I agree. UX 40 with ext. antenna is stupid, I rather get a TH 55 or get myself a BT access point. Since I have wifi access point at home, I prefer TH 55 or save big bucks for UX 50, since also there are more wifi hotspot everywhere now days.

Ok - but I can not afford a UX50 - so I got a UX40 - now I dont "need" WiFi but I may want it in the future - this is the ONLY option I have.
Also - some peope dont need WiFi so will save and get a UX40 or other BT only clie and then later get a WiFi MS.
Not to mention all those NX's that have zero wireless and use CF for their storage.
This gives an NZ for example, cheap CF storage (with Athena CF), WiFi + BT.
Pretty good if you ask me.

I love the UX's thumb pad / keyboard too. At first I can not believe the size of the UXs, it is so small in real life, it look bulky and big in the picture but actually it looks and feels in a right size, not so big like NZ 90.
I definely want WIFI support, I can see myself AIM while at class since at SJSU we have wifi hotspot in most of its buildings.

I recently read an article that used the UX50 as an example of what may be possible with the Windows Mobile 2003 2nd edition (I think that's what it is called.) Many lust for the UX. I don't ... I own one :D

you mean - MS is going to invent landscape screen orientation and its devices are going to be the first to implement it.
then sony/sharp are going to be sued for infinging on MS Landscape (c).

True. Having a WiFi Memory Stick is a good option for situations like this. From the posting, I was reading it as if the purchase was going to be made all at once.

understandable. If it was going to be all at once then maybe so - get ux50.
i dont think the wifi ms would have much better range though than the ux50 as the antenna are in the side of the screen for the ux50. that would make me think that they are effectively as good as an external in size and location (behind plastic and not metal)

RE: antenna power in the UX50.
I ran a VERY informal test a couple of days ago. I was out on my balcony, and tried scanning the WiFi with the UX50 in "laptop" mode, screen up, and my home AP showed up with a 70-75 strength.
In the exact position, while in tablet (closed) mode, I got around 55-60 strength.
I tried it a few times to come up these ranges. It makes me wonder if there would be a way to "tweak" the antenna, using some kind of signal booster. :)
EDIT: As a further test, I also tried one of those cell phone "booster" stickers (I got one for free somewhere a while ago) and tried sticking it on various parts of the screen half of my UX, and it seemed to have a MINOR negative effect on signal strength when placed on various parts of the silver side (on the black side, it didn't do anything noticable on a repeated basis)...
The one thing that DID stand out is when I placed the sticker centred (left to right) and close to the hinge, the signal was consistently about 6-10 percent WEAKER, which implies that the antenna is close to the base, and that the material for cell phone boosters actually interferes with the WiFi signal (unless we could get it to connect, I imagine). :)

04-02-2004, 04:21 PM
interesting - i wonder if we could get a UX50 vs "Wifi MS in UX40" comparison.
The reason I say UX40 is that would be the fairest test to compare just the wifi as the rest of the devices are pretty much the same.
