Has anyone used those battery pack chargers on the NZ? It's the unit that houses 4 AA batteries with a short cable that many used on the NX and NV series of Clie.

Same here although Sony says it's not compatible. "All charging on the NZ is supposed to go through the cradle."

Does that mean you cannot use a car charger with it?

The asterisks on the accessory sheet that comes with the NZ indicate all charging must go through the cradle. Both the NX and NZ require 5.2 volts at 2000 ma so the accessories should work. Although there is one anecdotal report of an NZ being fried at Fry’s while being charged without the cradle, this is one isolated incident. We have no way of determining if the unit would have failed do to another defect, regardless of the charging arrangement. My guess is Sony really just wants to sell more spare batteries and cradles.

There is one piece of concrete evidence, the dimensions of the external plugs stretch the flexible plastic door that covers the HotSync connector. Perhaps Sony is concerned with having to replace this part.
