This is my first handheld and the people I work with were really pushing me to get a WindowsOS. However, I really liked a lot of stuff about the NV80: the camera (which I never thought I'd use but I do), the keyboard, large screen, hefty feel, etc.

However, there are a few things that I hate. Either because I can't find a way to do what I want, or because it just doens't do it.

Here are the primary things that I can't do that are wanting to make me return it. Any help in solving these would really, REALLY be appreciated.

1: I use Outlook extensively on my PC so I need to synch with it. Outlook comes on the WinOS ones, but in order to get a decent contact manager, task manager, etc, you need to pay extra for one on PalmOS. I've tried Contacts5, Beyond Contacts and Agendus and I like em, but they all seem to be lacking one thing, which brings me to,

2: I seem to only be able to assign one category per contact but I need to be able to do more. My office PC has a lot of work stuff that I don't want on my PDA. My home PC has no work stuff on it. On the WinOS, you can assign a 2nd category called PDA and copy only those records that include PDA. This makes it so when I synch to work, only the names I want to be included are.

Also, some people I have are in two categories. For example, my doctor is in both 'Doctors' and 'Friends'. But when I synch to my Clie, he only shows in one category.

3: The file manager is a real pain. I'm used to the Windows file system and it seems that I can never find what I'm looking for on the PalmOS.

4: Word. Seems that in order for me to actually write and save a Word doc on my Palm, I again have to buy more software, whereas it's free on the WinOS.

So, can you offer some advice? I'm considering getting a Viewsonic V36 (or some other one with a camera) unless I can get these Palm issues resolved in some way. I appreciate any help or advice I can get.

I really like my NX80 and want to keep it. I really want to find a way that it can work for me.

I use Documents To Go Professional and it works great for editing and viewing all kinds of Office stuff on my NX80V.

I use both windoze and MacOSX for work & home and as a result, I enjoy a handheld whose OS is slaved to neither. I don't need my handheld to be a small laptop, I have a great wireless laptop. I want my handheld to be a great handheld. My NX80 is prolly the best handheld I have had and friends, I have had an awful lot of them - going back to the Newton. I love the backlit keyboard, the optional wireless, the big bright screen, the 1.2 mp camera.

That's the problem. I love that stuff too. That's why I really want to find solutions that will work for me.

But I hate the fact that I have to pay even more money just to get features I want. Like another $70 for Docs to Go Pro to get a Word feature and a decent Outlook replacement. Especially since that stuff comes free with the WinOs ones.

What about the 'one category per contact' issue? Is there a hack or something that allows more than one?

I'm not asking for opinions one the nx80 as I'm already sold on it. I'm looking for solutions as to how I can best do what I need without having to spend an extra whole lot of money.

Thanks

Doesn't the NX80 come with Docs to Go? Or did they stop including that software?

Nope. I got mine from the T|E CD.

To make a long story short, no, I don't believe that there is a way to get around the "one-category-per" rule, either through hacks or third-party software. However, this oversight will be addressed in OS6, not that that fact helps you any. As for wordprocessing, you have two choices - WordSmith, or Doc2Go - and they're both gonna cost you.

Personally, I have no use for multiple categories (though I can see how this facility might be considered indispensible for some), and since WordSmith is much, much better than that crappy PocketWord MS insists on shoving down PPC users' throats, I'm more than satisfied with my NX80. To wit, my HP568 and iPAQ have been collecting dust since last August, when I took delivery of my NX80. Up to that point I was using an NR70V as my "daily driver," but would still power up the PPCs from time to time for multimedia use.

Bottom line: If you NEED multiple categories, and REFUSE to pay for a third-party wordprocessor, then stick with PPC (or wait for OS6).

waple,

If you so totally attached to the Windows operating system, a PPC would be the best option. A PDA should serve your needs. When the cost/benefit ratio is better served by another unit, go with your gut instincts.

My NX80 is more convenience than necessity. For all of its features, it is the best PDA for me. The general cost of thrid party apps that solve certain needs for me are worth the cost (Agendus, Pocket Mirror, Acid Image to name a few)
