View Full Version : liquid stain on backlight

I did something VERY dumb. I used my wife's eyeglass cleaning spray on my NX70 screen directly (not putting a bit on a lens cleaning cloth and using that, as I should have). I had done this before and got away with it, but not this time. Immediately, a big dark nasty water stain has developed. Now, 1.5 days later, it has faded a good deal, but is still visible, especially on a blank white screen. It is irregularly shaped, and covers roughly the middle third of the screen lengthwise. The NX is still usable, but less fun.

What is the cause of the stain? Is it some surface that has changed color as a result of the liquid? Is it that there is residual moisture there? Has the liquid crystal changed its characteristics in that area?

I suppose there is no cure, is there?

Alex

Try putting it in an oven on low heat. Get some of the moisture to come out. I would remove the battery first though! It's pretty easy to take the battery out just see the instructions on cliebattery.com Good luck!

Won't any moisture come out in time anyway, the same way it came in, without radical treatment?

I'm not sure I'd put MY PDA in an oven, but that's just me . . .

Only time will tell if it will dry out on its' own . . . :(

I suggested the oven idea not to be funny but because you may need a dryer environment and a heat differential to force the moisture out from under the screen...assuming that moisture is the only problem.

Maybe I will just leave it open another night over one of our hyperactive heating vents.

I am sort of afraid of opening up the screen. How hard is it to put back together?

And is this sort of thing likely just a matter of a stain, or is the backlight itself likely damaged in some irregular way?

First of all I don't think there is any permanent damage (neither to the liqide crystal nor to the surface of the screen).
The crystal is hermetically enclosed between two glass plates. Until you break your display it won't come out nor does anything come in there.
And the cleaning fluid is for sure not that aggressive that the digitizer (the top layer of the screen) gets any damage.
What can happen is that if all the liquid evaporates there were some solide things left, things that were solved in the cleaning fluid and that didn't evaporate.

So I suggest simply leaving your Clie on a warm, dry place for a couple of days until all liquide is evaporated. If you then see any solide things on (rater under) your screen you will have to open you Clies screen and remove this manually. It might be located between digitizer and LCD or between the LCD and the backlight diffusor

I hope this helps a bit

What kind of temperatures can an NX handle? (With or without battery.)

I asked what NX you have NX70/60 pr NX73/80. If NX73/80 forget about doing anything. If NX70 go to pspilot.de they have the

If you have a gas oven with a pilot light, it is about 20 degrees warmer and much dryer. I often dry wet ink/ paint in my oven with only the pilot light going.

I guess I haven't the guts to go for the oven approach. And, yes, the stain is remaining over days, with no change for the better (or worse). Maybe I'll just pay someone more qualified than me (I am awkward with my hands--I'm a software, not hardware, guy) for cleaning.
