I bought a Sony RZ desktop series and because of a recall, i was sent a free SL10. Im not a PDA person, i think they are a bit pointless, but is this model out of date? It seems to go for about $80 on ebay. Should i sell mine or keep it? is it any good?

is there wireless internet on the sl10?

The SL10, in my mind, was poorly designed. The backlight isn't very helpful for viewing, it uses AAA batteries, and it appears that there isn't a dedicated video processor, so that you get some nasty ghosting of images. I'd get rid of it and pocket the $80, especially if you don't want a PDA.

Wireless internet on an SL:
1. Bluetooth MS to BT WAP, PC, or cel phone
2. IR enabled cell phone
3. Cable to cell phone
Wired internet on an SL:
1. IR modem to land line

Oh now, it's not *that* bad. It's got an OK screen for a greyscale handheld; even though it has ghosting.

If you want to try one out; maybe put some info on it [dates, numbers, files] Grab a couple free games, put a reader on it, maybe half a dozen books.. It's a great little device.

If, OTOH, you feel incapable of using such a device, or just don't have any need for it, then yes, you could allways sell it. But my advice is: play with it a little. Put some stuff on it, I'm sure you'll find something you like in it.

I tried to get an SL10 as a PDA to use until I get my TG50 this march, but they were sold out of them and the SJ20 as well and Best Buy said they probably won't be getting anymore. I settled on an open box SJ20 for $120.

Did the same... only *returned* an SL10, and got an open box SL20. I have never looked back! After using a Palm Pro, then a IIIxe for the past 4 years - the SL20 is the best unit I've ever had! Many might complain about it, but I bought, and use, it as a PDA. If I wanted a video player, MP3 player, Game Boy, etc. I would have bought one of them... :-)

I have an SL10/U and I am perfectly happy with it.

It's great if you're not interested in playing wicked handheld games or watching videos. I use mine for productivity, and IMO, productivity doesnt really require a color screen unless you're doing graphics or video work, which a handheld bites for anyway.

I just bought it as an impulse buy :D I already own a IIIC and a HP Jornada, as well as a Psion Revo. Did I need it? No. Did I want one? You bet. I own enough other devices to make up for the shortcomings in this great little machine. Sure, it doesn't have color, but neither does it burn the retinas like the IIIC, and I can actually read this during the day. Plus, it has a memory stick slot.. I love to read and play games; plenty of space to do that on that 64 mb card I bought with it.

Sure, it might not be the best device to play games like.. reptoids or zap 2000 on it, but it can play games like Elixir, Glinx, Monopoly, Scrabble, tetris clones, card games, etc just fine.

I've tried out stuff like fast CPU to get rid of some of the ghosting; but that didn't really work. It messed up my contrast as well as caused some nauseating flickering.. really fast but noticable on a still image like the launcher.. so I got rid of that.

Overall, it's a great machine. It's got all the trimmings plus a hi res screen. It's got a MS slot so I can expand it. It has and does everything I expected from it.
