ive read through all the WiFi adhoc posts on cliesource but still cannot browse the web through the clie wifi...

you see im trying to use my wifi-equipped xp-home notebook as a "bridge" for my the nx (wifi) to connect to the internet...

network structure: i have a 12Mbps ADSL setup at home. my xp-home notebook (computer name is "LOOX", and workgroup name is "WORKGROUP") is connected via lan cable to the broadband router (ip address is 192.168.1.1) and receives the following (router DHCP):
ip address: 192.168.1.20
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.1.1
dns server: 192.168.1.1

the wifi side of my notebook is configured as:
ip address (dynamically assigned): 169.254.238.27
subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
ssid: aloha4591
no wep

while my clie is configured as:
profile name: WORKGROUP (do we REALLY need to define the NX's WiFi profile name as the same group name of the notebook?)
*configured as AdHOC
ip address (statically assigned based on the notebook): 169.254.238.60
subnet mask (statically assigned based on the notebook): 255.255.0.0
gateway: 192.168.1.1
dns: 192.168.1.1
ssid: aloha4591
no wep
channel: 1

while the clie lansync options are:
primary pc name: !!
ip address: 169.254.238.27
subnet mask: 255.255.0.0

------------------------

using the above setup, i can wirelessly hotsync to my notebook with no problem at all... however, whenever i use either netfront or webpro to browse the web... nothing, either it hangs, or a dns error happens...

is there something that i may be doing wrong?

* networking with cables is a lot easier... whew... :(

Someone else posted that they can hotsync in Adhoc mode, but not get Internet access. Consider Infrastructure mode!?

In infra mode, you should be able to get an IP address and DNS entries from your DHCP server.

One note: your DNS settings indicate that you're pointing to your router (192.168.1.1) - I don't think that's gonna cut it. If nothing else, try changing your DNS settings to your actual DNS servers (available either from your router admin or from the 'ipconfig' command).

I would think the DNS address would have to be that of your ISP, not the IP of the router, the gateway is okay. Are you using AOL?

The profile name I believe can be anything you want.

He didn't exactly say where his wireless access point is, so it's hard to say which mode to use Infra vs Adhoc, so clie_wannabe, could you clarify, please?

thanks for you replies...

actually im not using any wireless access point...
you see, i am considering using my wifi notebook as an accesspoint (using the built-in wifi)... with the wired connection as the means to connect to the internet.

actually, really wanting to try out the idea... i just spent the past three hours trying every other possible combination, and i was able to get INTERNET access and HOTSYNC in AdHoc Mode... kewl!!!

here is how i did it...

using a undocumented function (??) for windows xp --> the "network bridge," i bridge my wired LAN connection (which is connected to the router at 192.168.1.20) AND my wireless LAN connection (defined via automatic addressessing at 168.254.238.27)...

after the bridge process, my notebook then has only ONE ip address (instead of the two before the process: wired and wireless) of 192.168.1.101 (DHCP of the router) of subnet mask 255.255.255.0, and both gateway and dns of 192.168.1.1.

based on these figures i reconfigured by clie as follows:
ip address: 192.168.1.102
subnet: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.1.1
dns: 192.168.1.1
ssid: aloha4591 (same as before i did the "bridge")
no wep
channel 1

in the lansync options:
primary pc: !!
ip address: 192.168.1.101
subnet: 255.255.255.0

-------------------------

and WOW!!! my notebook then becomes an instant "AccessPoint" for my CLIE!!!

however, i still have to turn-on my notebook before i can browse with my clie... quite meaningless, don't you think? :(

but my question now becomes ---> is IT possible to DO IT without the "bridge" functionality of XP?

yes, you can use the routing function (IP forwarding) but you have to create a subnet for your WLAN, and the broacast packets from the DHCP are not routed, you have to put DHCP on this machine if you want DHCP

How to enable IP forwarding function on Win2K (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3ben-us%3b230082#2)

thanks for the links regarding ip forwarding...

as for a reply regarding a bridge between two internal adapters, well, my connection is not configured as ICS, so i guess i wouldnt encounter any problems, or would i?

Yes is true...

Why you want ot use the Notebook as AP? you can use your desktop....

the problem is that my desktop doesnt have any wifi functionality... and i rarely use my desktop since it is configured as a file/db server (for self-learning).

clie_wannabe - great work!!!

Another possible application of using your notebook as a gateway to the internet, is to use it as a file server.

You could access all sorts of htmls, palm prc/pdb (via download from the notebook), etc. This could be done with the notebook hiding away somewhere. This is useful where using a notebook is too obstrusive, glaring, inappropriate, etc. but where using a palm is acceptable. In the subway, for example, it is not always possible to read stuff on the notebook especially while standing. However, the notebook could be in a bag, with the palm in the hand accessing files on the notebook.

This would be an interim measure before CF use is possible or if the 5GB NX come true or if the Sony harddrive wireless server becomes clie-compatible.

So I can use a USB WiFi adaptor on my desktop machine (which is part of an office lan) and connect to the net through that?

Yes, but you have to configure your desktop as network bridge or router...

Just spent several hours getting WAN & Hotsync to work with Win2k in an office (DHCP) setting (no Wireless Access Point). The config looks like this:

laptop:
1)Ethernet cxn to LAN, configured to use my Wi-FI card for Internet Connection Sharing.
2)Wi-Fi card set to Adhoc w/ a static IP
3)proxy server software running in order to pass DNS resolution data along to the CLIE. Currently only HTTP traffic is being proxied.

CLIE: Wi-FI card with the following network settings:
SSID: Any
WEP: None
ConnectMod: Adhoc
ch: 5
IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1 (the wi-fi card in the laptop)
DNS: 192.168.0.1 (the wi-fi card in the laptop)
PowerSaveMode: Disabled

With this config I can hotsync, run CLIE Mail, and AvantGo (specifiying my laptop and proxy server port in the Proxy settings). My only outstanding issue is that AIM 1.1 doesn't seem to support proxy servers, so it can't resolve the AIM server.

Any ideas on how to pass non-HTTP DNS resolutions to the CLIE (keep in mind this is win2k and my laptop gets its IP via DHCP)?

I enabled the IP forwarding for Win2K, but I can't seem to get it to work. Do I need to add specific routes or is the use of ICS required? The explanation of ICS seems to imply that things will not work properly for the rest of the LAN connections after I use that.

I have a notebook with:
IP 192.168.0.3
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway of 192.168.20 (my linux router)

Netgear WiFi USB:
IP 192.168.0.71
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.3 (also tried 192.168.0.20)
AdHoc mode

Clie:
IP 192.168.0.72
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.71 (also tried 192.168.0.20 and 192.168.0.3)
AdHoc mode

As usual everything works fine when I connect to my notebook (Hotsync, PalmVNC and such), but I fail to get through to the rest of the LAN and the internet.

As I said I did switch on ip forwarding through the registry, but I guess I need to do more to get the actual routing to work? What am I missing?

addict

on the CLIE, make sure to define DNS servers. use the same values that your notebook is using (command-line: ipconfig /all)

patrickl
03-03-2003, 11:31 AM
yes I have the DNS on all the configurations (Notebook, WiFi and Clie)

Actually I see some traffic on the linux router. Apparently something is looking where to find 192.168.0.72 (the CLIE IP address)

For HotSync (and PalmVNC) I need to use IP 192.168.0.71 (the WiFi adapter address) since the standard notebook address is not working. So I guess it's just the routing from the WiFi adpater to the rest of the LAN that's missing. But I don't kow how to get that bit filled in.

Two things needed to access the internet

The DNS and Gateway. The Gateway is the address of the router in the Clie and the DNS is from your ISP.

I think I had set all that up allright (and tried every possible permutation) So I just gave up doing this with Win2K. I guess I'm just not cut out to get the ip forwarding to work in Win2K. Then I installed the WiFi adapter on a Windows XP machine, created a bridge (select 2 connections, right click and then select "create bridge" from the popup menu) and then it all fell into place.

I just had to change "Primary PC Address" in the Hotsync "Primary PC Setup" to the IP address of the bridge, to get Hotsync running again.

Thanks for the help. I'm a very happy wireless surfer now :D

Why adhoc mode? Need more info on your setup. There are many configurations, too numerous to give here. How do you connect to the internet? Who is your ISP?

Primary PC Name should be "!!" without the quotes! "any" is used only in the SSID, like a master key.

If using Win XP, disable the firewall

PowerSaveOn: unchecked!!

I have noticed some severe network speed issues on the Windows XP PC that I used as the WLAN router. Apparently bridging the network drops the network speed to 11Mbps (or 10Mbps?). I removed the bridging and then all was fine again.

Do other people notice this too? if not how did you get around this?

(my accespoint is underway, but it is delayed for weeks already so I'm not holding my breath for that to arrive shortly)

Hi n2ifp
The reason I am using adhoc mode is because, i don't have an access point. my existing network is an adhoc (peer to peer) one.
i connect to the internet via a pci broadband modem in my win2k. desktop. i connect to this machine on wireless lan from my laptop.
The problem is i still don't seem to connect wifi from my clie with my main desktop (which has a dlink pci wireless lan card).

Very interesting, but it seems to make sense. I don't have it bridged as I have a separate wired Ethernet router with the wireless 11Mbps WAP pluged into a 100Mbps port. The cable modem makes life easier in a WLAN setup.
