I read somewhere in this forum that Movie Player in NX80 can play mpg files, it just need to be put in a certain directory in the memory stick (/MSSONY/MOML0001)
and renamed to be MOV000xx.MPG (change the xx to any two digit number)

my .mpg files is in dcim/101msdcf/ no need to rename
.mov is in mq_root/100mqv/ and renamed mov000xxx.mqv
for .avi i use the soft mmplayer on my nx73

mmplayer can. The only issue seems to be that unless your files are already very low bitrate (unlikely) you will need to re-encode them through VirtualDub, which is no major problem.
I am playing various files (Divx, Xvid) on my TH55, and usually have them encoded 320 x 240, 13 fps, 240ish bitrate. Any higher and mmplayer finds the files a bit too much to handle well.
