I just had my UX50 crash with the dreaded DataMgr.c, Line:9524, Index out of range error. I couldn't get out of it without doing a hard reset. If I hotsynced after doing a hard reset, the error would come back. I then removed everything from my backup directory, did a hard reset and then slowly added stuff back one at a time. It looks like the problem was being caused by Saved_Preferences.PRC. Does anyone know what app creates this file? I am suspecting Yahdice, but I'm not positive and I really don't want to keep crashing like this. It seems to happen about every month or so.

Thanks!

Can you load it and check the maker using zfile?

saved preferences is a file created by the palm os to save certain preferences, such as the view (list, icon...) of palm launcher. also, many programs (3rd party or not) save their prefernces in this file. some programs (especially if it is handango) store the trial days/games left or registration key in this file, so if you delete it, you can "reset" the trial. beware though, if you delete this file, yo will need to go back though all of your programs (or at least the ones you use most) and fix the settings back to how you like them, because they will be reset to how the setting were when you bought the clie. if you need to, though (such as in your case), delete the file. no clue why you are having this problem, but this is what the file is.

If you are talking about the common file Saved Preferences, it does basically what it says and is available to all apps you install on your machine and is backed up. There is another file, Unsaved Preferences, that is not backed up.

You could basically delete this file and install all your apps and start fresh, not a good solution, or you could install this first and install your apps one at a time until your machine crashes. With any luck you can figure out the creator ID of that app, find the entries associated with it in Saved Preferences and delete them with Filez.

The problem with what mrklaw experienced is the preference file got corrupted. If he backs up his handheld, the corrupt file was in the backup set. At this point, the best thing to do is hard reset and start over.

This nasty looping error hit my NX80 about a week ago. Next time I will try a restore from backup less the saved preferences file.

you don't need to hard reset, just delete the file

Thanks for all your tips. I can now restore pretty quick from one of these crashes by doing a hard reset, setting up bluetooth, moving everything out of my backup directory and then hotsyncing and then re-installing everything that was in my backup directory.

Any tips on deleting the Saved_Preferences file without doing a hard reset? I remember something about a kind of "Safe Mode" where I might be able to get into something like Clie Files to delete the file without using the launcher.

i'm not sure if it works with a ux50, but you could try: do a reset by pressing the reset button on the back and hold the up button as soon as the screen comes on. this sounds like a hard reset, but it is not- it doesn't involve the power button. but won't (again, i don't know if the ux50 has this, but i think it does) clie files delete it? i do not believe that it is read-only.

This is a "warm-reset" on a UX50. Hold the up arrow on the keyboard, and while holding it, reset the unit, then let go of the up arrow when you get the preferences screen. Then Ctrl-H to get to the apps screen. This won't delete files.

I get the Line 9524 error a LOT. I'd say once a month or so. Occasionally I can find the offending file and delete it based on what I was doing the last time I used the UX50. More often than not, however, it requires a hard reset and a data restore. This has gotten me into the habit of using the Flash backup frequently although I have it now at the point where a data restore of the apps pretty much has everything I need. The next time I get a lockup, I'll definitely look into the Saved Preferences.prc file and see if deleting it fixes the problem.

Just from experience, the error seems to be caused by multiple apps so I don't know if there's really one app to be blamed. It has happened to me when using AIM, Versamail, and Poker.

Cheers.
