help? a mac user here, just trying to make movies of my little one to take with me when i travel. as a mac user, i can't use sony's programs to make movies. i've heard the Kinoma player files are not the best quality (from reading posts here), so been trying to make quicktime movies.
no luck. i can load the files, the movie player can see the files, but won't play the movies with a "this format might not be supported" error message.
i've posted in apple's discussions, but no luck. i've emailed sony, but just get a response that i have to use their (windows) software to make the movies (which is not possible). so i'm looking for help here.
has anyone been able to make .mqv movies that can play on the clie? if so, could you read the file specs (say with the quicktime windows player) and post here? compression format, frame rate, file size limitations, etc.
i don't laptop. so this was supposed to be my way of showing off the little one to my friends and family when i travel. anything could help. thanks!

Hi!
I was in the same boat. I lucked out in that I have Cleaner 6.0 and it has built-in support for making movies for Palm...there's a Kinoma plug-in.
I've only made one and the quality was good.
Download the trial of Kinoma and see how you feel about the quality. I don't think it's bad at all.
You can not just change the extension and settings of a quicktime movie from what I've seen and tried.

You should give Kinoma a trial run. The quality is fine. The problem is its files are about twice as large as a comparable quality MQV. Another option you have is to purchase QuickTime Pro. You can make MPEG4 files which will play in Movie Player. Please note that this is my experience on a UX, but it should apply the same to your TH.

What settings did you use to do this?

My apologies. I just tried to convert a clip and remembered I had to run the QT output file through TMPGenc on a Windoze box.

thanks for the input. yes, both iMovie and QuickTime Pro can convert to mpeg4, but the clie movie player still can't read it. i can try the Kinoma. i just figured that if it can read some flavor of quicktime, then i should be able to make a playable movie with quicktime pro. keep on with the suggestions. thanks!

Not exactly what we want (which is MPEG 4), but it is possible to play mpeg1 movies on the clie without much trouble.
You will need a way to convert a movie to mpeg1. If you have toast, its Video CD process will convert one or move quicktime movies to mpeg1. Quicktime pro has a Toast Video CD component as well if Toast is installed. There are also various free programs for Mac OS X that can do the job.
Once you make the movie, you have to do two things for it to play on the Clie (I have the TG series).
1) Rename the movie to the form
MOVxxxxx.MPG
Do not deviate from this format, e.g. MOV00001.MPG will work
MOV0002.MGP will not
2) When installing on the Clie they must go into a specific folder on the Memory Stick. There are probably alternatives, but
/MSSONY/MOML0001 will work. Create this using Clie Files if necessary.
I pop them in directly into this directory using a memory stick reader ... palm desktop can be funny about where things go, and what it will accept to transfer.
It will accept odd sizes and speeds of mpeg1. About as fast as my clie can go is around 15 FPS, and 240x180 is acceptable size for showing off babies etc.
It will also accept directly the memory sticks produced by Sony cameras for both images and mpeg1s.

Just for shits & giggles, I exported one of the little MPG4 movies that I recorded with the Clie Movie Recorder (hack from UX50) to my main machine (Powerbook G4 running Mac OS 10.3.3)--suprise, suprise, it played perfectly, sound included! I have QT Pro 6.5 on my machine. If QT is able to read the movies in the native format, why would it not be able to write in the native format?
