View Full Version : Which cradle should I get?

I just got a new Clie -- I'm switching from a Visor Prism. My visor has a nice cradle on which the Visor sits to recharge and sync. There is a button on the cradle to start the hot sync.
I see there are 3 different cradles for the SJ-30 (in addition to the cable which came with it). They are PEGA-UC75K, which comes with an adapter, PEGA-UC60K, which comes with an adapter, and PEGA-UC50 which does not come with an adapter. Is the adapter the dongle that came with my Clie? Which of these cradles is best?

I switched from a Prism to an SJ30 just after Xmas (deep SJ30 discounts came along just as I managed to break my Prism - what a deal!). I believe you need the UC60K. The UC75K is for the NR series, and the UC50 will sync only. Not sure if our SJ30 cable adapter will work with the UC50 cradle, though I suspect it will. If you want a cheaper cradle, iConcepts makes what they call an "All in One" cradle for the T series, which also fits the SJ series. You can find them at CompUSA and Microcenter, and probably elsewhere. I have been using two - work and home - for several weeks now with perfect results. HOWEVER - a big one - elsewhere you will see my conversation (with gvtexas, IIRC) on this subject, who had heard that the display flicker shown when syncing with this cradle might be harmful to the electronics in the long run. I'm still using mine - I've been using cradles for six years, just can't deal with the cable hassles - with no problems, but am keeping this in the back of my mind.

The UC60K is simply a UC50 combined with an AC10 power supply like the one you got with the SJ30. There's a socket in the back of the cradle to plug in the power cord. I use the crade with power supply at home and the original USB cable (with the dongle and no power supply) at work.

No, the adapter is the AC adapter, the black box with one fixed and one removable cable.
If you're going to use your Clie in one spot, I highly recommend the UC50...well worth the $30...and you already have the ac adapter, so don't need to spend more for the model with adapter.
And as mentioned, I'm not partial to the iConcepts to say the least...I ended up throwing away the faulty adapter on the second faulty unit I got and opening the cradle and cutting the sync cord free...makes a helluva Clie holder (actual quite useful), but a bit pricey...

I was also thinking about doing the same thing. I don't need to sync that often at work but it's getting annoying not having a cradle at home bceuase you have to turn the Clie on everytime and click the hotsync button from the screen rather than just sitting it in the cradle and hitting the hotsync button. I thought I saw somewhere where if you registered your clie that you could get 25% off Clie accessories but I can't seem to find where I saw that.
I know registering the Clie is probably a good idea though since it extends the warranty from 3 months to 12.

This post was mine for some reason I was logged out. I thought that I had my account cookied so that I wouldn't have to log in everytime. Need to double check my settings, my apologies.

I solved some of my problems by getting a USB sync/charge cable from GlobalSource (InnoPocket model) that will trickle charge the unit. I will plug it into a USB port on one of the machines at work just to charge it. I paid less than $20 (not including S&H) and it works perfect.

When you register your Clie, you do get 25% off -- but only on one thing. I already used that to get a Stowaway keyboard (which Sony calls something else, but it's the same keyboard I had for my Visor).
I've decided to get the UC60 so I will have a cord that I can use for charging my Clie when traveling. My computer setup makes it very hard to get to the back of the computer unit, so once I set it up there, I don't want to have to mess with it again!

Nope. When you register, they give you a code number. You need to enter that on your order. That's all.

I recently purchased an SJ30 - LOVE IT - but found that when charging it in my iConcepts sync/charger cradle (which I bought for work), the screen does shimmer a little bit, when viewing photos, etc. I've been using it just to charge & sync, but I don't leave it on for longer periods (I would, if it didn't shimmer). I wonder if I should bother getting a replacement, or if just using it occasionally will be harmful. Any thoughts on this?
Also, apropos of nothing, this is my first Clie, and I have to say this web site has been extraordinarilyhelpful. I found answers to every single question I had (like why I couldn't beam at first [I needed to reset]). Also bought my Covertec case thru the site, and the customer service was outstanding. (Great case, btw -- gorgeous leather, slim design but with a bit of padding, and no issues with the c.c. slots, since I only keep business cards and stamps there...)
Anyway, great site!

It bothered me, and I returned one only to have the second do the same thing. By then I was beyond the 15 day return for CompUSA, and was stuck with dealing with manufacturer...which was a loop-de-loop to get anywhere. Finally decided it wasn't worth the effort, and threw the charger away, removed the sync cable, and use it as a stand (really handy, btw).
You may have better luck!

Is there anyone who can give the final word on if the flickering/shimmering screen while on in the iConcepts cradle indicates a malfunction that is damaging to the unit? What does iConcepts say on the subject? I have a similar unit that I got on E-bay for the serial port capability only. I don't have the option to throw it away if I want to sync at work on an NT environment.

The person I talked to at iConcepts was a receptionist...as far as I could get...their tech support is nonexistent (farmed out). Her comment was "send it to us," but was so casual about it, I was comfortable with doing that.
As far as damage, don't know how you'll get a final word...common sense tells me if there's that much interference going on electronically it can't be healthy over time...but that's just an opinion. Maybe a electronic wiz lurking can tell us more.

Thanks again.
Hi all. I just got a new SJ-30 this past weekend so I'm in the market for a cradle(s) as well. I'm trying to make sure I understand this--does the UC60K have two separate openings in the back so you could theoretically charge and sync at the same time or is it a deal where you have to unplug the charger from the back to plug in the USB cable and vice versa? And the UC50 has the same opening or openings, the only difference being whether or not a charger cable is included?
I'd like to have two cradles--one for home and one at work--where I can charge and sync through both, but I'm thinking I could buy one UC60 and one UC50, using the charger cord that came with my original unit to plug into the back of the UC50. Is that correct? Thanks.

In a word....yes.
