After a week with my TH55, I am crying for a stylus to replace the one that comes with the unit. While the thin size is less than wonderful, pulling it out of its silo each time I need it is aggravating.
What would make for a good replacement? A combination pen/stylus? A stylus with a shirt pocket clip?
The only problem with a combination, obviously, is forgetting to change to the stylus.
Thanks. BTW, the TH55 is so good that the stylus issue is miniscule in comparison.

I have one of the Papermate PHd pens or whatever they're called, anyway, it has a pen, a pencil and a stylus. The good thing about it is that the stylus is orange (a really bright orange) so if I don't see orange when I go to start tapping on the screen I know that it's not the stylus. Overall it's very nice, it was only like 8 dollars (compared to more expensive combos) it's very smooth, and a LOT more comfortable then the POS that sony swears by.

Go for the Rotring Quad. Solid pen, that gives you a pencil, 2 pens, and a stylus in the body of a regular size pen. I have had one for several years now, and would never go back.

I have the Papermate PhD, and the Fisher Bulletpen w/stylus. The bullet is really nice because the pen writes upsidedown (nice for writing serial numbers), and it is compact enough to comfortably fit in a pants pocket. With the Fisher you don't worry about changing pen/stylus because they are both available simutaneously at opposite ends of the pen. The stylus is available even when the pen case is closed. The only drawback to that is that the stylus can more easily become damage when dropped. I have the matte black with clip:

The PhD is nice because of the orange tip, and the comfort grip:

I picked up the Papermate PhD as well a couple of months ago and LOVE it. I rarely use it for anything but a stylus because I rarely need an actual pen...The orange tip is great for reminding my airheaded self when I need to switch "modes". I wouldn't go back to the toothpick for anything after this.

Are the Paper Mate PhD and the Sanford PhD the same? They look identical and the link which LanMan included in his post has both names.
Any comparison with the Avery doubleCLICK (other than the latter doesn't have a pencil)?
Thanks.

Good Evening-
I use the Fisher 3-in-1: Pen, 0.7mm pencil and stylus. The pen is obviously a Fisher so it uses the Space Pen ink technology (write anywhere, any conditions).
You can pick it up at StylusCentral.com
The Rotring looks nice as well. I am very familiar with the Rotring brand (old school draughtsman).

Bought mine at Target. However, my first stylus choice is the Fisher bullet. BTW: I also have a swiss army knife with stylus. The stylus replaces the useless, nasty toothpick. :)

Is the Fisher a heavier pen than the PhD? I tried out the PhD, but it's not as heavy as I prefer.

Do these Stylus replacements fit into the slot where the orignal one was? If not, is there a sylus that will fit into the slot?

I dont think any will fit because the stylus as u can tell is a retractable one. Therefore I would assume the slot in the TH-55 is as small as the retracted stylus?

That is true, if we can find one that is solid and about 2 1/2 inches long and thin enough, (NO COMMENTS PLS :) :D ) it would fit.
I took the center of an ink pen out and that fits fine, if I was too cut it down in length.
Just a tought.

I agree that the stylus provided with the Clie is a pain in the ***. Go to the shop at ClieSource and you'll find some great styli.

Yes, the Fisher Bulletpen has a metal casing whereas the Papermate PhD has a plastic casing. The Swiss Army stylus has a...well, a knife casing.

No. Neither the PhD or the Fisher Bullet were designed to fit into any PDA holder. Shirt/pants pockets only.

This may sound a bit strange, but what is the eraser like on the PhD stylus combo? I have used a PhD pencil for the past couple years and I love the eraser, its like 1.5 in long (so i've only replaced it once) and twists up and down.
anyway i don't have some kind of eraser fettish, I'm just curious-the pictures all have some sort of cap over the eraser part.

The PDair is retractible, has a pen and fits in the slot, but I do not have one and have not heard from anyone who does.

I have a Sanford PhD and a Pentopia Platinum, both bought on www.styluscentral.com.
Both have a ball-point pen, a brightly colored stylus point ans a 0,5 pencil.
I like both, the pentopia is stainless steel brushed finish, looks more "business-like" but is a bit heavier than the sanford, which on the other hand is nice to hold, and lighter.

I'm sad to see my replacement of choice seems to be gone. I have a black Cross DigitalWriter Duo (I think that is what it was called). They seem to have replaced it with the Morph DigitalWriter Duo.
The stylus end had their special polymeric "write on paper" feel. Cheesy marketing, but it really is an excellent feeling stylus. Frankly, because of my extensive use of this, the fact that the TH55's stylus is so bad was a non-factor for me.
I have liked the design of the Pilots, but refuse to buy. If you have been using Palms long you know that they sued Palm when it was called the "Pilot". Then even after renamed the "PalmPilot" they sued again. They make awesome pens, and i used a lot of them before that happend. I'm just bitter i guess..;)

I have the exact same 2. One stays on my desk at work, the other is in my laptop case along with the TH55

I got the PhD multi too awhile ago too and I love the thing. I actually do use the pen and stylus alot. I go through 1 refill a month. I don't use the pencil much. Yes, I love the bright orange tip to warn me what I'm using (as I can forget very easily) and I'm glad that I can also use it to reset my device when it hangs.
Up here in Canada, I avoid Staples, Business Depot, etc. They sell it for about ~$15 Cdn + taxes. I got mine for ~$10 Cdn (including taxes) when Loblaws (near where I am and is a grocery store) had a grand opening. I was amazed at how cheap it was that I even got another one as a gift for a friend.

I tried the Phd, but found it too heavy in my shirt pocket and too fat when writing on the TH-55. Went to Staples to look for other options and almost bought this 4-in-1 made by Belkin in the PDA accessories for $15. Before I did that though, I went by the regular pen section and saw practically the same 4-in-1, just Staples brand and just $6. Only difference I can see is the Belkin has black and red ink, the Staples one has black and blue. This pen is much better for me than the Phd and it works by holding the pen a certain way and clicking to change functions. I could never get the hang of the Phd's twist method. Staples Pro4Mance, highly recommended.

Has anyone used the StylusCentral 3-in-1 replacement stylus? Its on sale for only $9.95, so I thought I might give it a try. http://www.styluscentral.com/3in1stforsoc.html
I don't really *want* a 3-in-1, but I want a replacement that has a high-quality tip and preferably a better feel (if that's possible with such a small, retractible stylus).
I just *loved* the pdapanache styli (for the m505), but sadly they don't make a TH55 model.

Any suggestions?

Brando is selling a replacement stylus, with a pen in it for about $15. Looks interesting and fits in the slot, but I haven't actually held one. You may need to check under UX accessories as he didn't have a TH section up yet last time I looked.
I have the Brando pen/stylus and like it. I didn't mind the OEM one, so it seems about the same in terms of normal stylus usage. I was ordering some screen protectors and GoGo caps from Brando, so I figured it might be handy to have a pen/stylus while I was at it. The point is a little bit fatter than the Sony one, which makes it a little harder to hit the already difficult reset button, but it's possible. It's a nice point to write with, though. The telescoping part is a little looser than my Sony stylus, but I've had two TH's and one stylus was looser than the other, so I returned the looser one. So some of Sony's stylii are just as bad in that respect.
I've always had a bit of a problem with the top piece of the stylus catching on the edge of my pocket when I take it out, and it seemed to get worse with the Brando (or maybe just because the stylus expands more easily.) So I used some fine sandpaper to take the sharpness off the little finger-gripper thing on the top, and sanded it to a round bump just slightly protruding from the rest of the case. That's working a lot better.
One more thing, for some reason the Brando is a little shorter than the OEM (I know, like it needed to get any smaller  ). I'd guess it's because the top section can't collapse as far in because of the pen, although even when closed it's a tiny bit shorter. When extended it's a difference of about 2-3mm, and although I noticed it at first, I've since completely forgotten about it -- but I do have very small hands. The weight feels about the same. So that's my review, hope it helps someone.

You have to be pulling our legs. That thing has weight? :D
(The stock "stylus" that is...) ;)
The best all-around deal to me seems to be this 4-in-1 with LED and laser pointer:

It's a very slim pen for having all that inside, and it only costs $18!

You can contact Papermate to ask about Australian distributors.

Office Depot has them online:
