View Full Version : Anyone stuck deciding between NX and NZ

I am using an NX right now, albeit lightly, because I bought it two weeks ago and told the store there was the possibility I would upgrade to an nz-90 when they became available.
I think that the NX is absolutely fantastic!!! I love it. I did not think I would be won over so easily. Only thing is, I really like the swivel feature, and it looks really sharp in silver. It is a nice size as is, although size is not a crucial factor to me.
I want bluetooth and the cost of a mem stick is only slightly cheaper than the upgrade... plus the nz-90 has that camera... hmmm... but I've heard so many squabbles about the camera, cradle etc.....
I'm leaning to the nz-90 but I'm just not sure, and I have to know by Friday whether to cancel my nz order with Sony :(
Aaaaargh!
Anyone else in this dilemna? Which will you choose and why? And let's not talk about the price of the nz alone, because when you factor in the camera and the bluetooth etc, the value is there, IMHO...

Go to the store and put one in your hands. That'll be the deciding factor.
NOT because of the size issues or any of that bull****. Just so you can see AND feel it vs. the Nx.
Good luck :)

hi, i actually sell these things and i get a lot of time to play with the nz90 a lot, the one biggest difference (other than size) that i've noticed, is that the camera swivel is locked to the position of the screen, it doesn't have the freely swivel camera like the nx and nr.
the camera on the nz only takes pictures outwards when the screen is closed and only takes pictures towards the open of the clamshell design when the whole thing is open.
other than that, the size and weight isn't much more than the nx. hope that helps a little with your decision.

I just traded by handspring prism for the NZ.
I would really have preferred the NX for the size and availability of cases. However, after having my cell phone poop out and having about 100 numbers programmed into it that I would have to put back in manually, the bluetooth capability became really attractive.
The camera was sort of a don't care for me, but not that I have it, I keep using it for stuff i wouldn't have even thought of before.
What I don't like is the big bump on the back where the camera goes. As I look at this, I can tell its going to be tough to have a play through case for this thing.
The thing is an expensive tool for me. I am worried about it if I should drop it without protection. So, what seems to be getting to be the big issue is the case problem.
Over all, i don't at all mind the size (except for the bump). It feels solid in your hand and the screen is terrific. The controls are well placed and it is just a really nice piece of gear.
The weight is also just not an issue for me.
I had also looked at the Palm Tungsten, and just though it looked tiny and old fashioned. I just don't see why anyone bothers to put silkscreened areas on when you can do it so much better in software - with the added advantage of being able to get it out of the way for a bigger screen.
So, if there had been an NX with bluetooth, I probably would have bought that instead.

JohnJ, check the cases thread in this forum. There are a few good suggestions in there.

zx7rgirl - Both my wife and I have NXs. I picked up a NZ Monday. The NZ does have a bulky feel. For Ebooks, I typically hold a NX with my fingers under the CF card slot and thumb on the page up and page down buttons. With this hold, the NX has an eloquent balance and poise while the NZ feels clunky. Also, the bottom of the NZ is a tad wider with a different radius in the transition to the sides. When used in the tablet mode, this requires a different, less secure hold for long term comfort than the NX.
The camera is fabulous although I miss the swivel.
While I am not a fan of built in keyboards, the NZ’s is much improved for fast thumb typing. If you are not a Graffiti fan, this may be a major consideration.
The screen is an AMAZING improvement over our NX’s. It’s the very definition of bright and clear, so much that I can run the brightness setting at about 15%. With the NX, 25% is about the minimum.
My only real complaint with the NZ is I find myself ejecting the memory stick with my pinky. I expect this to be less of a problem as my hands develop new habits.
Bottom line? If you want the better camera or built in Bluetooth, get the NZ. Otherwise, get an NX but don’t do a side by side comparison of the screen with an NZ. The NX has superb ergonomics in a balanced package, while the NZ is a bit clunky with outstanding functions.
JohnJ80 – I use the Grinder Gear Basecamp. It’s a tight fit for the NZ but it works well, and has room for my modem and WiFi card.

Did that on Saturday and it just has not lived up to the negative hype and press that it was getting... the only chalange so far is the battery. I don't know if I should get another cradle for work or use something else for that purpose.

hey JohnJ, I did the same thing... traded in my Prism for an NZ. I had my Prism for almost 2 years... it was actually a pretty cool PDA, and the camera attachment in my opinion had some cool features that weren't available in the NR or NX. The NZ was the PDA I was looking for, and one that definitely blew the Prism away in absolutely every area.

I have both. I just bought the NX in Dec. and really didn't want to spend the money, but I am so glad I did. I take a lot of pictures, and they are sooooooooooooo much better with the NZ. I will use my NX for back up. Where did you find a store that will let you upgrade? I would have done that if I could have.

Some stores, such as Best Buy, sell extended warranties that, after a while, can pretty much be used to upgrade your PDA. Here's how the warranties work:
1) Buy an extended warranty for $50-100 (when you purchase your new Clie, of course).
2) Use your PDA, hope it's everything you dreamed of and more, but if flaws start popping up, such as memory sticks popping out for no reason, the warranty kicks in.
3) Take the Clie back to the store. The store will have a few options from there. They'll either send it back to Sony for repair, replace it with the same Clie in stock, or allow you to trade it in for something else if they no longer offer the old Clie.
The thing is, it's dishonest to abuse this. Don't make up problems (some people drain batteries, lie). If you use your Clie enough, there will probably be genuine problems that occur. Then, because you're honest, you can feel good about not taking no for an answer when you try to upgrade at the service desk.

I should clarify the upgrade thing - "I" would upgrade, but not through a store policy. We don't have anything so fantastic as that here. But by upgrading, I mean just refunding the product within 30 days. Using a product and then returning it is not something I have ever done, so that was also part of the reason I just wanted to stick with the nx.
I have babied it - no fingerprints etc, a write shield, I even bought it a metal case while I was using it. The new owner at the store will be very happy, and they will prob. get a small discount too.
AND, BTW, THANKS for all the responses. I will go with the NZ - I'm returning my nx on Friday and will have to do without a clie for a week or so...
Such is life...

The NZ is good, its just that I can't afford it and I don't need the extras at the moment. Notice I say "at the moment". :)
