View Full Version : NF 3.1 ... is it worth the bother ?

after all the hype about NF3.1 being the best thing since sliced bread, I followed the instructions and got it working on my UX50 (I love ZLauncher !)
Now I'm wondering what all the fuss is about ?
Speed... slightly improved rendering
Zoom... doesn't let me now, and the new column arrangement function
Multiple windows.... no sign of them. For me tabs would be the killer ! Having to close a window to open a link sucks !
Keyboard control.... In my webmail client pressing return on the keyboard in NF3.1 is ignored. It worked in NF3.0
Am I missing something ? This really is just a point release that Sony should ship and help recover some credibility. Looks like it needs some platform specific tweaking though, which may explain the delay.
Meantime... I still wait with baited breath for Opera (and/or a P900 !)

my feelings exactly. what's all the fuss??
Just the thought of having the newest application. Just like most of other applications, as time goes by, the hype fades, then it becomes a thing of the past. I had to go through alot of tries to get NF3.1 working with ZLauncher on my UX50. It surely consumed alot of my time and effort. ;)

Hey Eddy...do you think I'll have a hard time getting NF3.1 running on my UX50 since I don't plan on using Zlauncher?

Actually it doesn't really matter if you use ZLauncher or not, but it's a nice launcher for the UX though, so is Appshelf. (but that's only my personal preference:) )
If all fails, you can definitely run NF3.1 in RAM. This is what I have been doing for the past few days. But I think I narrowed down the problem so now NF3.1 isn't crashing nor causing Soft-resets even while I use inconjunction with ZLauncher or can go full screen with the Shell NF3.1 patch. :D

Can access exchange webmail through owa with no issues or fixes needed to add to the exchange server. I can utilize my email from work which was the main reason for me getting the UX50. When I used 3.0 and it didn't work I was disappointed. Now that it works I am very, very happy. Hotmail, bank account access though ssi and multiple page sights. WORKS FOR ME!!!

Can someone explain a definitive instillation process for NF3.1 without using any added software (Just your original UX factory software).
It would also be nice to have both NF3 & NF3.1 on my UX to evaluate the two. I tried installing NF3.1 but gave up as I could not get it to work, just reset errors even when installed to RAM!!!
A nice simple guide would be nice.

Papa Pro - sadly the 'as factory' set up isn't going to work... you need something that will let you move it back out of MS/Internal Card... you can't hotsync the new .prc across as the existing one is write protected.
I'd suggest a trial of ZLauncher (gives you 30 days to get it working !) or FileZ (feebie I think) so you can move it around
What I did was hotsync it to the card, then use the ZLauncher file manager to move the sync'd .prc to the program directory, and it's worked perfectly. I know others have had problems... I wonder if there are different versions of the nf3.1 prc floating around...

Thanks ZZarg,
Which program file did you move the file to? Was it moved to Ram or media internal card?

install NF3.1(it'd show as NF3 modified) to your ms via hotsync then install Zlauncher (if you don't have one)
open zlaucher and you will see NF3 modified as NF3.1 icon in your ms, mine is already show NF3.1 icon in the ms
click zlaucher file manager and find NF3.prc in your ms then copy it to RAM and no need to delete the old NF3.prc
after copied, I only have one NF3.1 icon only but if you accidently delete NF3 modified then you will see NF3 (default)

IYou can use the built-in CLIE File file manager for that - it works just fine for moving between card and main memory.

Well 3.1 does fix those gliches which prevented NF to be the only browser for all uses, for example GPRS browsing now is so much faster, you don't need webpro, while using GPRS as they are both fast now.
You can access popup windows, the access is not the best you can imagine, but still indispensable to access certain sites. You can change user agent, very useful to access certain sites the way you want, otherwise you might be redirected to an unwanted page based on the browser detect settings of the site.
No more PTL errors even with smaller heap memory.
The rendering engine seems to be better anyway.
Finally I think NF 3.1 is the best browser one can have on a palm today...makes browsing on the palm pretty enjoyable.
I remember less than 12 months ago I used to browse with Xiino or Blazer (he he) that was kind of ridiculous and unusable....

I think NF31 was worth the bother.
Faster, with choice of rendering quality for that extra bit of quick. I like the more user configs. I can easily remove past links.
I like the new re-shrink sizes, and now that we have the NF3.x shell, it's fabu-rific.
and more pages can be accessed, including hotmail w/o additional hacks.

you cannot truly accept it until you've tried

okay, accepting there's some value to it... wonder if Sony will ever (a) fix the keyboard thing (or is it just the webmail I use ?) and (b) produce a flash'd update to replace the existing NF3.0 ?
Ah, we can dream !
a) the keyboard work just fine, be aware of your other hacks like keyquick, mcphiling, etc

orol - don't have any hacks running... apart from ZLauncher the UX50 is pretty much as factory. I only find the keyboard return key to be a problem. Simply doesn't produce a CR in Horde (webmail). Not tried it anywhere else yet.... will continue to play.

I confirm the key is working here, even if never use it

nope... just tried here via nf3.1 and the return on the keyboard doesn't seem to work. Tab does !
