View Full Version : So, does the 4GB CF work?
By now you would have heard about the MuVo2 and its 4GB CF card. Has anyone tried the CF in their NX? I have an NX70V and I would like to know if I should get a MuVo so that I can get that 4GB CF inside.

I wondered the same thing...I'm not sure if I want to even attempt to purchase one to test it out. I still have my eye on the TH55. If anyone does find out, please, let us know...ebay has the listed for I believe around $150 - $200. Not bad for 4 GB of space...assuming it works of course.

It will NOT work in Palm OS due to the way it's formatted. Any CF card over 2GB has to be formatted with the FAT32 file system and Palm OS only reads FAT16. Even if you bought one and formatted it to FAT16 the Palm would only recognize 2GB because that's the max partition size of FAT16. The 4GB cards are really meant for profesional grade digital cameras. Hopefully Cobalt OS will overcome this limitation but the odds are slim to none that our current NX's will ever be able to read any card over 2GB. That's not really a complaint since I have the 1GB MSPro and am quite happy with it.

You know what, I'm such idiot! I should have known that...guess my A+ certification is pretty worthless! Although in my defense, I didn't know the type of file system the Palm had :) . Thanks for the heads up skorpiankh. By the way, how much did the 1GB MSPro run you?

Sort of stating the obvious, aren't you? :D

Thanks. Of course, I forgot all about the discussion about FAT16 and the Palm OS during the height of the CF drivers discussions.

What about MS cards bigger that 2GB? We already have 2GB MS cards - are we going to see bigger cards?
what about FAT64??
anyone tried?

Can it be partitioned in to two 2gb fat16 partitions?

I don't have any license from MS, but I know that FAT16 + 64KB cluster = 4GB partition. The only problem is: NX doesn't recognize any FAT16 partition with 64KB cluster.

thats actually an interesting idea..
partitioning it..
but..how would you access the space?
it is essentially two drives...

Right, if you can have 2 vfs volumes (cf and ms) then you *should* be able to have three (maybe :))

I assume it's possible to have 2 VFS volumes, if the OS can allow that...testers anyone? :)

If you read the article, it stated that the drive could only be used as a 2 Gig unit after FAT formatting - it's still much cheaper than a standard 2GB CF card. You lose half the space, but save twice the money. Now, back to the original question....has anybody actually tried it with a Palm or Sony unit?

I've tried a Hitachi 4GB MD on NX73, and it recognizes the first 2GB space.

Siliconbug, could you try and partition it?

NX supports single partition.
Hi to all
I want to ask... anyone test the Hitachi 4GB Microdrive ?
And fully works?... or it is read only ?
Can someone give me the results of the tests? and tell me will it work on the NZ90? [when card will be formated to FAT16 - 2GB ...I know that full 4GB isn't available soo I want to use only this 2GB].
Thanks for replys

Search the forum, it is more than once stated that >2GB can only be fully used by FAT32 enabled devices (which no clie is).
And especially for the 4 GB microdrives this question is answered at lest three times...

But is it the NX which supports only single partition or is it the driver? i.e. some OS limitation or could it be nevertheless accessed somehow? e.g. using different driver for the second partition.

Sure you can access it somehow and I can tell you what the somehow needs to be (either a) or b) is needed).
a) you need to write a new driver that adds fat32 support to palm os 5 (fat 32 supports way above 4 gb partition size)
b) you need to write a new driver that adds partitionhandling to removeable media for palm os (even harder to do that)
If you finish writing one of the drivers I would be glad if you share it with me ;)

It's not the problem about FAT16/32, it's the problem about NX itself.
FAT16 supports up to a 4GB single partition. Only if we have a new CF driver(?) to read 64Kb cluster FAT16 partition or FAT32 (I prefer FAT32).
Hi
Siliconbug You test 4GB MD on Yours NX80... Can You tell me what is battery life from Clie when You use it with this card? and is it read only or fully working?... and last question... works it on pelaca's hacked drivers?
Maybe pelaca's can make the new driver?
Thanks for help

@Siliconbug:
64kb clustr at Fat16 is nonstandard.

based on what i've read so far, i'm guessing that every microdrive that is at least 2 gigs won't give us any problems, right?
meir87
05-25-2004, 06:22 PM
Wrong. Any microdrive at most 2gb wont give any major problems.
Egalus

meir98 is right, every MD <=1,99GB (and I mean real GB, not harddrive manufacturer lie GB) does fully work.
Above 2 real GB you won't get any more space (and I can't even tell you if it works at all).

Siliconbug, when you are using that 4g cf card it isn't doing anything odd to the other 2g is it? I means if you used the first 2 gigs for file storage and somehow just use the other 2 gigs with a digital cam or just for file transportation from pc to pc. it could be like a spy hiding 2 gigs of data if anyone ever asked to investigate your clie ;)
