View Full Version : Wi-Fi Toggle App!!

This app is soooo cool, that I felt it warranted its own thread. Find it here: HotSwitch (http://member.nifty.ne.jp/Khiguchi/FreeSoft/HotSwitch/)

Credits to gnaihc who posted this in the "skins" thread. This app allows you to toggle on and off Wi-Fi and as we all know, this is a much needed missing functionality. It appears as the green Z in my Zgrab screenshot below:

Nice find :)  I also happened to found this today.  A toggler as a DA.

Yeah, I've been using that DA for years. What I like about HotSwitch is that is is literally one click for on and one click for off. It just doesn't get any better than that. :D

Smeggie,
How do you use ZGrab?
I installed it, and what my next steps?
Thanks in advance.

Ok, you've got it installed...next step, open the zgrab app and select Activate. Then, go the the screen that you want to take an image of and turn off your unit. Yep, turn it off. Next, go to you MemoryStick and drill down to/Palm/Programs/Zgrab and there, in that folder you will magically find your screenshot!!

Good Luck!!

Note: Don't forget to DE-activate it or you will be taking lots of screenshots!! Something I just now realized!!

Hey smeggie, i'm very interested in this app but haven't really understood its benefits ; i've installed it and when i click on it it will just toggle wifi connection on/off ; if i set gprs as default connection, it will do the same with gprs..

Have i missed something ? How do u use it ? I've been looking for a perfect switch solution and think i'm gonna have a look to DAs posted above

Hi c0mm0n!

I don't use it as a switcher, per se, but rather a way to toggle the wi-fi connection on and off. I have always wanted to be able to activate or deactivate the connection on demand and this app affords me this.

If you are looking for a Switcher/Toggle, look at NetSelect and map it to your jog press. :)

Netselect doesn't fully support the wifi connection ; i've just retested it to confirm : you canb switch from Wifi to Bt, but not from Bt to Wifi....it will still dial the bluetooth gprs connection ;

I've then tested the DA, which is much better as it support the wifi but won't display it in the actual service..anyway, it correctly "dials" the good connection ; i'm using it with da launcher which make it quite easy to access ;

c0mm0n: netselct only supports classic connections but not wifi ..
I'm looking for such a app for a long time without success

since I'm quite frequent in 2 wifi networs & use also BT connection to the internet

Seems the DA is the only working solution even if it won't display the wifi as the default service, it will connect to it normally if it's the default connection.

This is a great piece of software. I installed hotswitch.prc only and it seems to work as indicated. What is hotswitchAS.prc? and do I need it?

Thanks

Forgive me for not understanding, but what point does it serve to be able to turn on/off wi-fi from the launcher? I mean, if a program needs to use wi-fi, it will start it. It's not like turning it on beforehand is going to save you anything? How can it be made useful?

I find it most usefull for turning OFF wifi. As you said, the application will activate wifi when needed, however I have noticed that it doesn't always turn it off when exiting netfront or verichat.

I can also disable autodisconnect in my wifi enabled apps and be able to switch bewtween them without reconnecting to the network. And then use Hotswitch to turn it off when I am completely finished with wifi.

So let me get this straight. It will keep the connection to wifi even if you go play a game or listen to music and if you want to head back to the net it is still on? Does this drain the battery faster?

Hotswitch is not necessary to the connection alive even if you exit the app. Most wifi apps such as netfront have the option to autodisconnect or not on exit. What this program lets you do is toggle the connection on or off without going to preferences.

It's really just a shortcut for going into preferences/network and tapping the "connect/disconnect" button. And to answer the battery drain question, YES, a lot faster.

Hmmm...

I must be doing something wrong then because I can select the "Wireless Lan" connection that I have created in my prefs to invoke Wi-Fi. Works like a charm. :)

U confirm it won't work with the default one ?

It has been a very long time since I set this up, but yes, I believe I set up a separate connection expressly for Wi-Fi or, my home Network which runs DSL through a Linksys router. I'll back track when I have more time, c0mm0n and I will try to give you more details. :)

With Netfront, you can simply tap the Z icon inside the app to connect/disconnect (in addition, you can also configure it to ask you when exiting). Similar for SmbMate, which has a tiny tappable connection icon. I've never found this to be a problem, so I fail to see how this is a "much needed missing functionality". If you really need to terminate the Wi-Fi connection from the launcher, turning the device off and on works just fine :)

For me, I use it similar to Badrap. It is just easier than having to go into any menu for me. It's right there - on or off.

If you don't like it, don't use it. :)

*Art Vindigo & WorldMatePro are two apps which do not auto-disconnect. FAIK, there may be others. Overuse of that not-so-sturdy power slider is definitely a bad idea. Apps like these fill a very real need for the power user.

I agree.....I hate having to go into preferences to turn off WiFi.

Call me crazy but I personally insist on turning off my WiFi BEFORE powering down (even though this does turn off WiFi). Who knows....it may be why some have had those hardware problems where it hangs at "initializing".....a hardware failure confirmed on another thread. To me, it's kinda like turning off my TV by pulling the plug. It works but IMHO not too good for your gear

I may be paranoid but I am an expatriate, living in a country with no Sony service center!

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but I just found a way to link HotSwitch WiFi toggle to a hotkey via Prefs->Hotkey Setting! Using the hotkey lets you toggle the WiFi connection from within any application! Always something new to learn with UX!

Ooops..the message before mentioned it. The UX calls it HotKey settings, not "key combination".

No big deal here, but I hate it when people take credit for something they have nothing to do with. Before you take credit for this find gnailhc, chech my post date in AppShelf about HotSwitch, where you probably read about it first. I found it buried in a long list of apps on a Japanese site. We're very lucky that the menus are in English. The app was conceived as a module plug-in for AppShelf, to allow easy toggle between several connections. (ie Wireless LAN, Windows RAS, Compuserve, etc...)
Enjoy it anyway!

Actually, after some searching, it seems that it had been mentioned earlier, very quietly though, on some UX thread which I cannot find.

Ed: I did find the thread, posted on the 03/03 by gnaihc. My apologies to him.

While I'm here, have a look at the new nifty DA I found, before someone claims that one too! (Apps forum)

Does BT Toggle also recognize Bluetooth connection attempts coming from the other side? What I mean is, does BT Toggle automatically switch on BT on the Clie when I send a file from my notebook to the Clie? Seems to be difficult (or impossible?) to implement, but that's the way I install my software. I do not use Hotsync or QuickInstall. I just drag and drop the PRC file (or any other) on the BT Icon on my Notebook and instantly it appears on my Clie. This is why I keep BT always on.

I tried loading the WiFi toggle app that started this string. I already have BT Toggle on board. The WiFi app apparently conflicted somehow, and forced my first hard reset on my new UX. Fack!!

Well, as you say, this is impossible. If BT is not on, how could it know something wants to converse with it ?
If you need BT always on, then you don't need BT Toggle
