View Full Version : How to play native MPEGs Guide

I've noticed some confusion as to whether the TH55 can play MPEGS natively and after a couple days of experimenting I finally was able to make it work.

Thought I'd post this to help clarify the HowTo part

1) Click on a MPEG file in Netfront and when it asks to open or save, select "Save"

2) Netfront will download the movie to the MStick into the "/Palm/Images" directory.

3) Use Clie File Explorer (Very important) to create a new Root directory on your Mstick called "/DCIM/100MSDCF"

4) Move the MPEG you just downloaded (ie> test.mpeg) into the "/DCIM/100MSDCF" directory.

5 Lastly, rename the MPEG using this format... MOV00001.MPG

example--> I renamed test.mpg to MOV00001.MPG

*** Very important***
The extension ".MPG" is case sensitive to Movie Player and MUST be in uppercase. This is the reason you should use Clie File explorer as it allows you to change the extension of the mpeg and make it uppercase. No matter if the movie ends in ".mpeg" or ".mpg" you need to make it end in ".MPG"

6) Open up Clie Movie player and play :)

7) Of course you can just use Clie Data Import and drop mpegs from your computer into the "/DCIM/100MSDCF" directory as long as you comply with the above naming conventions.

Hope this helps

What does NetFront have to do with any of this?

I wanted to play my own MPEG's I have (music videos and such) thorugh Movie Player and I have no plans on using NetFront to be downloading MPEGs.

sonicxracer,
He is talking about how to download mpeg movies off the net using Netfront, then save them to the memory stick, rename them, then make them play.
You can bypass the netfront thing if you already have them on your computer and just transfer them to the memory stick.
Best wishes,
Bawko

This directory structure and naming convention work perfectly. I saved downloaded mpegs from pocketmovies.net and moved mpegs from my PC to the MS using MSIMPORT and it worked great

It played for me as well. In fact, right clicking on it gives you an option to "convert for Clie" or similar wording.

So far I've only run into a couple Mpegs that wont play which might have to do with unconventional audio codecs. But, yes that Molly Racer video plays nice, clear, and smooth.

Just renamed it MOV00005.MPG and put it in the "/DCIM/100MSDCF" directory.

PDAguy -

Thanks for the great info! I just started playing around with MPEGs and couldn't get them to play on my Clie unless I passed them through my computer and reformatted them! That was until I found this thread!!

Much thanks!

I am so happy I found this thread!

Thanks for the great info because I don't think I would have figured it out on my own. Was almost ready to completely give up after trying so many different ways to get an MPEG I downloaded to show up in the player's list.

Well, I tried to play a file that I transferred from my hard drive to a memory stick. It was the trailer for Shrek 2 that I downloaded from pocketmovies.net. It didn't work. Am I doing something wrong?

Most likely *not*. There is something unknown going on with certain MPEGs. Even at SonyStyle NYC, the salesman created a short MPEG on a Cybershot camera and the TH55 wouldn't play it! At least he got a dialog and the file showed up in the list. With certain MPEGs, they don't even appear in the list!

Hi, does anybody know how to play the mpg from VCD in TH55?
I tried the above suggestion, no luck, it says unsupported format.
What kind of mpeg is mpeg1 ? I thought VCD suppose to be mpeg1.

Thanks.

I also d/l'd Shrek2 (the larger of the 2 files -- 12 megs) from the same place. No problem; in fact, I tried it 2 ways and both work on my TH55.

---1---
At the desktop, opened Image Converter, then dragged & dropped the file there. Watched it transfer over to TH55. Opened Movie Player, tapped the drop-down list to get to the Quicktime files. Tapped, and enjoyed.

--- 2 ---
Created /DCIM/101MSDCF on the MS per above instructions. Dragged and dropped mpeg directly from PC to MS. Renamed it MOV00001.MPG as above. Within Movie Player, tapped the drop-down list again, this time to get "MPREG files". Fine.

Main diff that I can see >>> QuickTime format shaved off about 3 megs. Also, both formats seem to be a bit darker than when viewing at the desktop.

Off topic:

mikecane, welcome!

I'm glad you are giving 1SRC a try!

I think you'll see it's not half as bad as you think. Not quite as many "drooling fanboys" here as you have imagined. ;)
...and LOTS of Clie info!

I hope you return to become a member.
You have interesting insights that would no doubt be welcomed here.

I tried to use Image Converter to convert some MPEG files to MQV and make them smaller but, for some reason, it does not work with all MPEGs. Some work fine and I can see the frames being converted, however, with others it just simply does not do anything at all.
Also, if the file is bigger (like a 800Mb full motion picture), it does not even enable the "Output to Memory Stick" button.

Any hints on this? Any other software I can use? I tried Eazy VCD but it seems to work with DVD disks only and not with files in my PC.
Thanks!

How about .AVI files? DIVX or XVID? What apps support them natively?

The DAT files on VCDs are slightly modified mpg files. You will need to convert them to make them playable on the TH-55.
VCDGear should work fine. You can download it here:

I don't know about you but after I took a mpeg movie with my cybershot camera in mail mode I popped the MS in and I could play it right away.

The movie the sony guy took was probably in 640x480 or VGA since the resolution is higher than the screen's it wouldn't play I have had this trouble before.

IDEM.

Is it possible to change the display name on the movie player and to make the thumbnail appear ??

I copied a mpeg file and it does play in my clie but it seems choppy and slow. It is a 20mb file of 320 x 240

----------------------------------

This is all very well and nice, and I can play the movies without any problems. But there's one dilema remaining... If you have scads of mpegs on your clie, listed from MOV0001 to MOV9999, how the heck are you suppose to know which movie is which? Is there any way to know the actual name of the movie, like MoviePlayer movies have .MAI files? I find this regular convention to be a bit out-of-date shall we say.

Does anyone know a fix?

Thanks for the good tip. I fumbled around the movie player to find the imported file before I noticed the drop-down menu on the center-top, but it worked fine.

Q: A thumbnail shows up on movie player when you shoot a movie with CO's camera. There is small (around 1.7k) file in [/Palm/Prorams/MoviePlayer/100MQV01/MOV12345.MAI] having the same name (MOV12345) as the movie. It's probably some form of jpg or bmp. Do you know the format so we can have a nice thumbnail for the method you just showed? If not, I'm planning to mess with it this weekend, I'll post it here if I found something.

How do you cut the mpeg to fit 128mg memory stick. The file is over 500mg. Can I use TMPeg or Virtual Dug? Any other ideas? Can a 500mg file be compressed to fit? (Something I know I'm wishing for that can't be done, but had to try.)

Ok guys, I think I have worked it out. I downloaded a mpeg movie. I stripped the audio using Virtual Dub and coverted it to a wav file. Then I ran the movie video and my audio wav through TMPeg and the end result was a movie to play on my PC or burn to VCD using Nero

I then drag and dropped the new TMG movie into Image Coverter and hooked my clie up to the PC. I found that you don't have to use Data import, just connect with image converter. The program coverts the movie and at the same time loads it onto your memory stick. When image converter is done, I just unhooked the Clie, tapped on Movie Player (the software that comes with TH55) and enjoyed the movie on my Clie. 52 minutes or approx I VCD takes about 105 MG on the Memory Stick using this method.

Since all the above worked for me, I thought I would share it. Don't ask me how it worked, it just did. The true geeks in this forum can answer that one. I'm a newbie when it comes to explaining the tech info.

The MAI file in the /palm/programs/MoviePlayer/100MQV01 is a renamed 80x60 jpg file. I tranfered it to my computer and it opened, no problem. Saving it however is another story. I don't know whether the compression rate, or what ever else is wrong that I cannot have any other file show up on my CO.

Someone who can understand jpg binary code (maybe the header?) needs to take a look at this. Here is what I did so I save you some time.

I transfered the file to my computer, opened it using Irfanview, saved it using saveas and transfered it back to the CO, deleted the original file and renamed the new file same as the original. It did not show up as a thumb.
