I'm sure this has already come up so bear with me. I just upgraded from a NR70 to a NX80V. The NX80V has an 5.0 OS but I was wondering if it can be upgraded to the newest version which I believe is v.5.2.1. Can anyone let me know about this and how to go about it?
Thanks

The most notable change is Sony's use of the Standard SOUND API. AeroPlayer, and other 3rd party mp3, ogg vorbis, multi-variable rate mp3's are playable on the CLIE.
Other than that I can't say...

Palm OS 5.0 supports Maximum of 16MB RAM (user accessable)
Palm OS 5.2.1 supports more then 16MB user accessable RAM (dunno about maximum)
that's the only major diff I know off the top of my head

5.2.1 has a built in WiFi sniffer

5.2.1 has also the enhanced IR? If not, then :(

no, the enhanced IR has nothing to do with the OS..
thats more of a hardware limitation

How could this be a HW-limit? I thought it's more or less a matter of APIs which trigger the IR-sensor to emit the signals. If it would have been only of the IR-sensors then why couldn't eg. Omniremote access to this earlier?

enhanced IR is just a high powered IR that allows you to control IR enabled devices, such as Tv's and VCR's.
standard IR is what is used to allow simple file transfers, and limited range of controling IR devices
so, some palms DO come with enhanced IR's, and others do not

Is it true that Sony has very limited on support provided to end users? I think they produce great products but very bad on support.

I see a large number of folks (who paid good money for their NX) on this forum asking for the upgrade to 5.2.1
Particularly useful for taking advantage of the standard Wifi, audio APIs and to extend the usefulness of their NX.
A number of them don't mind paying for a little $$ for the upgrade.
Would it help to collect a bunch of names (with email ID) from this forum and send the list to Sony to see if this would elicit better response from them.
I have been warned that Sony doesn't care much about support, but wanted to check your opinion/experience.
Please post if you have any better suggestions!

It is a Sony corporate philosophy to limit support to their customers. And, yes, their products are good .............. but not that good. Sending names won't help. Only NOT buying their products might help.

i don't think it would make much of a difference because 5.2 has different architecture...
it uses palm's sound api's for example

Well, but upgrading NX70V to Palm OS 5.2...will work without collateral effects? I'm asking because the only feature I'd like to have is the damn WiFi sniffer, which is a obvius feature to have if you are considering to produce thousands of PDAs... but apparently this is not so obvius for Sony : (

Well, thx then. I guess I´ll have to sell my Clie or dump it into the garbage. Its sad.
Anyone in this forum still uses a Clie? I´m kind of a newbie.... Whats the most actual version of Palm OS for Clie? Mine has 5.0 and I just wanted a damn wifi snifer. I gave up about infrared function, which, as I understood operating it, is almost uselless since you can send/receive files to an cellphone for example... It just allow sending applications, something that to me is very very stupid.
Maybe I´m stupid :) but I´m getting more and more frustrated in putting this once excellent produt in a reasonable shape for today standards.

The latest Clie Palm OS version is 5.2, just one step up from 5.0
There isn't that much difference. The NX80 is still great.
When I used my NX73, I setup a WIFI profile with the SSID "any". Using that profile, my Clie connects to any AP that it could find. I could get along without a snifer.
IR is useful when you need to send an electronic version of your name card (your contact info) to other devices. Just use it or leave it.
I don't know what's all the fuss about.
