View Full Version : Memory Sticks?

I want to purchase a 128 MB memory stick.

The only thing is I am not too sure about the difference bettwen the white Magic Gate ones and the normal purple ones.

I heard that the white ones support ATRAC3 (a type of music format?). However do they also support all other types of data, for instance, Palm applications, like the purple ones do?

Alos I don't know if anyone can answer this...but does any else here have SonicStage software? Mine came with my VAIO PC. It is good and easy to use. I use it to record tracks off CD's I own and listen to them, in SonicStage, on the computer.

It has a tab on the top to transfer music to a Memory Stick. I went to My Computer and opened the file where the SonicStage music is stored. I clicked on Properties..and it says the file type is OpenMG. Does the MG stand for Magic Gate? Does that mean to transfer it to a Memory Stick I need to use a white one?

And one last question (sorry for so many :( ). I have been hearing about the new Memory Stick formats, such as 256 MB's and 1 GB. First, does anyone know when this will come out? Second, I have also heard that not every Sony product will support the new memory sticks. Is that true? If it is, will they make some sort of sleeve/adapter that will allow older products (for instance, a T665c) to use the new capacity?

Thank you for reading through this long and boring post, any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Yes, all other files on a MG (white) stick will function the same as they do on a purple one, including MP3 and video files

The audio that the SoniStage software makes requires a white stick to use. Yes, MG is Magic Gate.

It's true that not every product will support the Memory Stick Pro's. If you do a search, there was a news article about what products will support the new sticks. For the Clies, the NX's and NZ's will have an update so they can support them. Not sure about the upcoming TG, but I don't think the new SJ33 supports them either. As for an adaptor, I highly doubt it.:(

cbulock, thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to help me out. Not many people do that. I appreciate it very much.

You have answered my questions pretty well. Just want to clarifiy:

You say will support MP3 and Video and function the same as the purple ones, this means they also can hold Palm applications? (It looks like you say yes but I don't want to buy one without being sure  )

Also, what makes you think they won't make some sort of sleeve? Money wise, or to force people to upgrade? :p

Or did you see an article or something.

Again, thank you for your time.

A white MS is basically a purple one with added support for ATRAC3. Anything the purple one can do, the white one can do.

Sorry, didn't mean to confuse you about the difference between the Memory Sticks. As Sideway said, anything the purple can do the white can do. There is some misconception that the white sticks won't allow MP3's and video files, thats the only reason I mentioned those. But, yes programs will also run off the white sticks.

The reason I don't think Sony would provide a sleave to use the new sticks is, 1. with the differnt form factors of the Clies, there would need to be multiple sleaves, 2. Price would also be a concern, it would be hard to sell them since it would probably cost more than people would be willing to pay, 3. They want you to upgrade to a newer model.

But this is just what I think, I haven't really seen any statements by Sony about it.

Thanks cbulock Sideway for your help.

Guess I'm going to buy a Magic Gate one.

Only thing is, I cna get the purple for $50, and the cheapest I found the white one is $99...ouch

You'd think they would make it cheaper if they want you to use there copyright protection thing.

But it's probaly because I don't know of any other companys (SansDisk, Lexar, etc) that makes one.

Anyone know if there is any difference (performance-wise) between the solid purple Lexar MS and the translucent purple Lexar MS (other than the blinking light, and the fact that the solid purples are the ones under rebate)?

I thought I'd read somewhere that there was no difference between Sony-Lexar-SanDisk (and supposedly Sony makes them all anyway), sans the MagicStick.

These things must be fluctuating in price...just looked at Amazon.com and now they're $39.95 after rebate (same price at Buy.com). Anyone seen better?

I check www.devsdeals.com and www.techbargains.com for good deals. They don't always have the MS listed, but it's worth keeping an eye on.

Are you sure the MG in OpenMG stands for Magic Gate. I think that the Sony Minidisc NetMD players come packaged with this software and I don't see where they would have anything to do with Magic Gate.

I believe that the NetMD MiniDisc players use the same ATRAC3 technology that the Magic Gate memory sticks also use.
