View Full Version : Movies locking me up!

I converted some video from a DVD using Sioux Chief's method which basically has you using Smartripper to create .vob files and then MPEGModerator to convert to the .avi file and then ImageConverter to do the final conversion and copy to MS. I am pulling selected chapters from the DVD with Smartripper. After the process is complete, I launch the movie player and see the file there. When I select it, the player progress bar jumps from start to finish (left to right) continuously without playing the video. In this case, it shows the video as being 12:34 long, but it just hangs there without ever starting with the progress slider going back and forth (quickly) from left to right. I cannot stop this except by doing a soft reset. I have been successful once using this method, but I figured maybe I had some of the settings in MPEGModerater set different. Anybody know what is causing this?

I'm having the exact same problem. I just converted Spiderman and loaded it onto my Clie, NX-80, and mine does the same thing that mailrail's does. This is the first time I've ever done a conversion so I'm sure I've done something wrong.

See Vader? The NX forum people get pissed if you post a video question in that forum, but you can't get an answer in here!!!
Maybe we can figure it out together...
Are you also using the "SiouxChief method" (Smartripper/MPEG Mediator/ImageConverter)? And if so, have you EVER been successful? The first time I did it, it did the "lock-up stutter", where it showed that there was an 8-minute video there but the status bar just jumped back and forth from start to finish. The second time, using the same exact video, it worked (and still does). The third time, I tried a new and different video (12 minutes) and got the original results. Dumped that file and tried again and still got the original results. I wish I could remember my EXACT settings the time I was successful. SiouxChief didn't go into specifics about some of the settings and files for SmartRipper and MPEGMediator. I'll try again soon and see if I'm successful.

Actually they get pissed when you go in and complain without asking a question.
Have a _search_ through and you`ll see a lot of video questions have been answered in the NX forum..... not yours though... funny that. And like your complaining that your question isnt answered within what.... 5 days... come on... do you think your not getting what you paid for or something?
regardless it sounds like some sort of codec problem.
have you tried using another program to rip the DVDs?
or try running the vid file through tmpgenc, as that seems to convert readily and freindy for Image Convertor.

I DID ask a question in the original post. Just frustrated that I followed Sioux Chief's instructions and was successful once, but not after. Seems I'm not the only one who's failed at this, either.
I've tried other methods without success, including using TMPGEnc. Do you have a more user-friendly method that includes the use of that ripper/converter? I'd welcome any advice on how to use it.
And let me add...I genuinely appreciate any help I get with my Clie. Like at least 42% of the people who use this forum, I'm not totally PDA literate. Although I can hold my own on a PC, this Clie is a new toy for me that I will only master with time, patience and help from good people like yourself and others here who unselfishly give of their time to make others like myself appreciate what these little pocket rockets can truly be capable of. My former Clie, a N610, was only used for games and phone numbers. I'm bound and determined to make my NX73V do everything Sony designed it to do PLUS other things they didn't design it to do.

I've tried two different methods, neither of which are sioux Chiefs. The first time I used DVDDecrypter to RIP the DVD, then used GordianKnot with DivX5.1.1 to encode, then IC. The movie was playable in Quicktime but no sound, but it gave me the stutter problem on the Clie. The second time I used DVDDecrypter, Dr.DivX for encoding, then IC. This gave me the exact same results.
On a side note, I also downloaded a .MQV file from Ncodays FTP site, a music video. Anyway, I changed the name like to MOV00003.MQV and copied it to the proper location but movie player won't play it. It doesn't even display the name of the file, just "???". When I try to open it it says that it's an unplayable format.

Just dealing with the side note for now - theres more people helping in the other thread for original p roblem.
To double check your getting the name 100% right. Make a video via your Clie. Go to data import. copy the file name and paste that file name to the mqv you downloaded. Then copy the downloaded MQV overwriting the one you took with the Clie. A long process I know. FWIW: I`ve downloaded quite a few vids from NCO and havent had problems... so maybe try another if this one still gives your grief. Downloads are corrupted sometimes from teh net.

Should I assume you`ve read all of the post: DVD movies on Clie with success...and instructions (http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24987) ?
You said you tried SiouxChief`s suggestions, have you also tried gsjohnny's? (on first page of that thread).
Have you been to Halesy`s site <http://www.halesy.com/vcd/clie.htm> and tried the instructions there?
Have you tried http://www.eazyvcd.tk/ (a suggestion from DRider)
Turns a dvd into an mpeg1 file pretty quickly (after about a half hour of preliminary processing the conversion is close to real time of the dvd... maybe a little longer - the whole thing happens automatically with pretty much one click). Then imageconverter happily changes the mpeg1 into a movie file the clie can play. The Matrix on normal quality setting (both in Easy VCD and Imageconverter) turned into about 280mg - three files, two 124mg and one 30 or so. The first movie I tried was Ghost in the Shell (cuz it was the shortest dvd I have!) and on normal quality it was clear enough to read the credits easily. I also tried it on Imageconverter "long" setting and the quality was ok, not great, but the file for Ghost at that setting was only about 70mg. Even with mono sound at that setting, the sound was very good.
Also ]{night[]wli have a real simple way to do the convertion
Use Super DVD Ripper from TinySoft Rip the DVD right to VCD
use IC 1.1 to convert it to MQV and no need to have you clie tied up during the convertion IC will export to another drive if u have one or u can choose where to save it.
*note you will need IC 1.1 to do this... you may only have 1.0 *
Or try Audronis suggestion I've had the best luck with xMPEG. It's freeware--easy to find, and seems to rip down to a compatible DIVx in one step, so all you have to do is use IC1.1
This should give you some more to try. And if all that fails there is more info on the Converting DVD to MPEG to MQV (http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9035) thread.
