since lithium ion batteries can only be recharged 300-500 times, i did some research, and found that the TG50 uses the same battery as the sj33, and i aquired one of those. on the same website, it had a walkthrough on how to replace a sj33's battery, but it said that the tg50's was too complex for the average pda user, but i figured that i could figure it out, or get a th55. because i am already notince drop in battery power, has anyone replace their tg50's battery? any one know how?

Page 6 of the Read This First - Operating Instructions tells you how to remove the battery for recycling if that helps.

Dear Valued CLIÉ Handheld Customer,
Most CLIÉ handhelds are powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that
offers long battery life. Sony is providing additional safety information
below for the following Sony CLIÉ handheld models equipped with the capability
to remove the internal lithium ion battery and which contained related removal
directions for recycling in the models' operating instructions:
NR/NX Series: PEG-NR70, PEG-NR70V, PEG-NX60, PEG-NX70V, PEG-NX73V,PEG-NX80V
TG Series: PEG-TG50
SJ Series: PEG-SJ33
UX Series: PEG-UX40, PEG-UX50
TJ Series PEG-TJ25, PEG-TJ35
Lithium-Ion batteries are sensitive and should never be removed from the above
listed models unless the battery has been discharged. Simply because a unit
may not operate does not necessarily indicate a battery has discharged.
In addition, metal instruments such as pliers or tweezers should not be used
to remove the internal batteries. Otherwise, a risk of short circuit and
overheating could exist, potentially resulting in injury.
ALL USERS OF THE ABOVE-REFERENCED MODELS SHOULD THEREFORE NOT REMOVE
THE INTERNAL LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE.
Customers should disregard the directions in the operating instructions
regarding battery disposal/recycling. When disposing of CLIÉ handhelds
(or other Sony computer products), customers should instead visit
www.eiae.org, a website maintained by the Environmental Issues Council
of the Electronic Industries Alliance, for detailed information on local
or national recycling programs available to U.S. consumers.
Sony is a participating member of the Electronic Industries Alliance
which promotes responsible disposal of electronic products.
As always, if you are experiencing performance issues with your CLIÉ handheld,
please visit Sony's CLIÉ customer support site at www.sony.com/clie/support
for assistance. Customers should never remove the internal battery while
attempting to troubleshoot issues with the CLIÉ handheld.
If you have questions, please contact Sony at (877) 760-SONY(7669).
Sincerely,
Sony Electronics Inc.

I got that email too novon.
That link, orol, said one would have to send the TG50 to them to get the battery replaced. There has to be another site that would just sell you the battery.

has anybody's tg50 battery started to die already?

Yeah. Bought my TG50 in Feb 2003, as soon as it was available in local stores. Dropped it in the cradle for recharglng just about daily. By around Christmas, it seemed to hold a charge only for 2-3 hours of use. Finally I gave up. Grabbed a T-C to replace it, but returned it due to serious guality issues. Then picked up a TH55. Couldn't be happier, despite lack of keyboard.

Yup!
I bought mine 12/30/03 and I have begun worrying about the apparent loss of "juice". It seems to hold a charge for a day only with an hour of use. I have been in the habit of leaving it in the cradle when not in use. Aa habit I got into years ago with my Pilot Personal, and a habit that has not been a problem 'til now.
I have tried to find out if this "continuous" charging is not appropriate but I have not found an answer yet. I did try to run down the battery completely and recharge it fully but that does not seem to have mad a difference. Oh, well. :(

Dead, as of two weeks ago. I bought my TG-50 last May, and I have just loved it. Two weeks ago my TG-50 was totally dead (power) in the morning. I recharged it at work, but noiticed that the battery ran down VERY fast (from 100% to 4% in about 4 hours, with or without use), and while recharging a single spot on the back of the Clie got very warm. Some kind of short circut I assume.
On the up side I did buy the Best Buy extended warranty so I returned the TG-50 for a new PDA. The down side of this is that they had very few PDAs, and no Sony Clies at all. (Even two weeeks later they still have no PDAs hardly.) So, being that I had to have something for a PDA I traded the broken TG-50 in for a iPAQ 2215. I am getting used to the Pocket PC (boght a SOcket CF Wireless LAN card and it works great!), but I do have some CLie accessories I do not now need:
Clie Keyboard
Portable Charger
AC Adapter

this is very worrying. my tg50 is almost a year old. many times i charge it at night even though it is 80% full batt. sometimes i stop charging when i go to bed, because it already indicates 100% on the battery meter, even though the unit is still charging (as charging light is still on). i guess those aren't good practices with regard to preservation of battery life?

So what's the verdict? frequent charging or with till it's almost out charging?

Perhaps not. To tell you the truth, the TG50 was the first (among a long line of PDAs) I loved so much, that I didn't **want** to upgrade. So perhaps that's the reason I see the battery differential-- only one that remained in heavy-duty use for more than a year. But the battery life issue ultimately got the best of me. For anyone who has had their TG50 for about a year, best I can tell you, gently, is to be even more vigilant about backups, and start looking at other models.

Lithium Ion Polymer battery are designed to be charged a lot, but as far as I can remember, lithium ion batteries are best when they are not used down all the way, which is why it takes only an hour for the battery to get to 80% from 0%, but takes 3 hours for the other 20%. It's the topping charge, and under normal use, most people only use the top charge, which is why the battery says it is 100% charged for a very long time.
