View Full Version : Is the TH55 worth Keeping or Returning?

I have been reading so many bad things users have been reporting on the new TH55.

The Organizer software stinks

Hardware problems reported

Performance issues (speed of CPU)

Camera is low-grade

No remote with headphones

No cool cases for this thing to keep it safe

crappy stylus (I think is OK)

None of the 3rd party apps are taking to it very well.

In your Opinion is it worth keeping and be disappointed when the next "TH" comes out and is NEW and Improved and we get screwed with NO updates or patches?

Do you really think Sony will listen and come up with patches to all these problems with in the next few months?

Should I return it and get my cash back (by the way, no restocking fee at CC) and go back to using my NX80 since it is a stable machine with all the extra's?

JEEEZ! What a personal question! Like saying should I return that puppy I just got. :p

Honestly man, the only pearls of wisdom i can give you on this one is if you don't like it - return it.

If you're having doubts NOW, and you just got it...well, that's not a good sign and those doubts will soon turn to regret.

If you're banking on patches/updates or upgrades from Sony...don't hold yer breath!

Go back to your NX80V (like I own) and wait patiently for your Cobalt equipped UX80 (like I am). ;)

Well with all the wining going on I feel like a bought a lemon is there any good threads on here where people are not trying to rip the software off or they think this is a leap forward in the right direction for Sony. I already have 4 Clie's I just don't know what all the complaining is about. We have had this issue with the UX50 (the screen it so small I hate it but yet everyone still has it and uses it, some may even take it to bed with them :D

The Organizer software stinks

This is pretty subjective, i like it better than the stuff on my old T415

Performance issues (speed of CPU)

Like i said in another post... do you really need all that extra speed? Eventhough i come from a turtle 33mhz proc, i played with both the NX80, the UX50 and this one, and all seem to be just as fast. I consider it a fair tradeoff for the extra battery time. For that big of a screen, something had to be given up for the sake of batterylife.

Camera is low-grade

For my job, the camera is good enough, it helps me get the general picture of what's going on at my client's factory. If I do need good pictures then i take my digital cam. Even the NZ-90 takes crappy pics compared to a regular 4.3 MP camera.

No cool cases for this thing to keep it safe

It's only a matter of time before the good stuff comes out. The same thing happened with the UX series

None of the 3rd party apps are taking to it very well.

Same as the above. the model just came out... what do you expect? The UX faced the same problem if i remember right.

the UX has at least 5 months in the market and not all applications for 480 x 320 support.

Like Winexprt said, it's a really personal question whether the TH is worth your time or not. I think you ask yourself if it covers your needs, if you can live up with it's faults, and don't let yourself get influenced by others.

Personally I think it meets my needs, but just like everyone else, I would always like to get more for my money.

The 3rd party apps will catch up soon on the TH55, it will just take a little tweaking. What will be painful is waiting for software to run on OS6 (Cobalt). The early adopters (and I will definitely be one) will have to be VERY patient and realize OS6.1 or .2 will probably already be out by the time most software and games are tweaked to run on it, and native software begins to become more common. It will be at least a couple years before OS6 has anywhere near the number of apps that are available to OS5 users.

The TH55 is an amazing device, but if you already own a UX50 or NX80 there just isn't enough differences to justify laying out the cash for this new device, unless of course you have been patiently waiting for a non-clamshell HiRes+ Clie or just are overcome with techno-lust and must have the very latest device ;)

I have been waiting for a non-clamshell HiRes+ Clie for a long long time. It is worth the wait.

In somple term It is good, very very good. I was thinking of getting the TJ37 but for a $100 diff what the heck. Now I am happy with my new found toy,

The TH55

I returned my TH55 because of 3rd party ap issues. I didn't want to give up WiFi and so I bought the TJ37. So far I'm loving it, I just wish the battery life was longer. But compared to my TT3 the TJ37 looks pretty good afterall.

I decided yesterday to keep the TH-55. Things I like better than my UX-50 and NX-80. WiFi is better, Voice Recorder is louder, Clie Organizer is cool, Camera operation and location, size compared to my NX-80.

This is your choice not ours. Only you will know if your happy or disapointed with your purchase.

See ya

The h311 it is!, He asked for our opinons and he'll take it! :p We'll make the decision for him and right now that decision is to KEEP the TH55 :D and heres the reasons why..

1-Hardware problems...*I haven't heard of any hardware problems. Proably the buttons but thats mostly if your a gamer which thankfully I'm not. Sony has buisness users in mind with the latest clies lately and haven't been focused on gamers, the people who want PDA as a gaming machine should look at the Zodiac. :)*

2-The speed of the CPU. I came from a UX50 and I have to say this device seems faster. Surfing the net, importing, exporting, turning on/off wifi, viewing images, viewing documents, etc. I don't see any slowdown with this CPU.

3-Camera low-grade, for a .3MP camera, it takes some sharp images, but still, I would be happy without a camera. Just afraid one day the office will say no camera allowed and then I wouldn't use my TH anymore :(.

4-No remote with headphones, I believe that Sony has stopped giving those out with the newer models. Last I've heard was the NX/NZ models, other simply don't have them. I just got used to putting my songs on random and just listening to it. I have to admit I do miss the handy remote :(.

5-Cases- With the formfactor of the TH, I simply reuse my NZ sports case and it did a great job on keeping it safe. Last week I went walking and accidently dropped it, I opened it up, no cracks on case, no problems with TH running, only thing that hurt was my ears as the headphones fell away gah :(.

6-Stylus- I don't use the builtin stylus sony gave us lately. I simply buy me a nice combo stylus and that works great.

7- Its not the 3rd party apps that hates the TH, its the CO that hates the third party apps. For the alarms to work, I simply keep the datebook app of CO as the last app used so I know my alarms will work right. The clie organizer has made me stop using agendus because I wanted an organizer in electronic format and CO does this perfectly.

8-Battery life- You REALLY have tow ork on this to make the battery go down 50%. I go three days just to get it down. I like to listen to shoutcast radio while surfing the net, read books, watch movies. The TH battery is simply a dream come true.

*9-I've explained all this to you and now you will keep it because I'll kill you for makin me type all this and you just give it away!! :p hehe, have fun :D

I am reminded of some very useful advice I got from another pda user. He stated that you make the very best choice using YOUR needs and preferences. After you buy your pda, never again look at the ads and discussion board for comparisons until you are ready to purchase another pda. It makes good sense to me, as long as something is meeting your needs why trade it in?

I myself am guilty of techno-addiction. I just gotta have the latest and greatest...but remember there are pros and cons to all choices we make. There are many reason, I would like to keep my NX80 and there are just as many reasons I would like to get rid of it and buy the TH55.

I don't agree with waiting on the next technology, that mind set will keep you from purchasing anything. Because there is always something better on the horizon.

Isn't this like asking someone if they prefer Coke or Pepsi?

The only problem I have experienced is the beaming issue. I don't beam on a regular basis , so I won't be taking it back. However, that is just me. (Do I dare hope that Sony will release a patch??)

There are many things I like about it the TH55.

-Jog dial placement. I read e-books all the time. I love having the jog dial at the back. Fits my hands perfectly.
-WiFi. I haven' had problems with it.
-Camera. For a PDA camera it is pretty darn good. However, IMO, if you want super clear, sharp pictures, get a digital camera.
-The screen. I wish it was a little brighter but other than that I think the screen size is awesome.

I agree that the lack of a cool case is disappointing. However, the machine only just came out, what, 2 weeks ago? I am willing to give the case makers a few more weeks before they take my money.

Thrid party apps, again, the PDA hasn't been out very long. I'm sure as more people buy them and complain the developers will release fixes.

PS...For the record, Coke rules. You get better burping action with Coke.

Problem is there was so much ra ra ra ra ra about how great the TH55 in this board. That many believed it without for trying it out.! The hype was unreal! When I saw the TH 55 the first time I thought " how in the hell am I going to use the jog and the <--> on the back of the stupid thing! When I i first saw the pictures and and read the data I thought.NOWAY This is not for me......Since then I sort of liked the TH 55 but not enough to pull me from waiting for the new os system due out some time soon.

Sibes: I don't have any problems with beaming. I've been beaming between my TH and my T415 no prob.

(and just for the record, I disagree... Pepsi is better for burping.... at least the pepsi they have in Peru)

I just now beamed some items from my UX to the TH with no problems.

Each person will have his/her individual take on this one. Whereas I'm in no better position to judge than the person who said it was a Coke vs. Pepsi kind of choice, I read in your post a lot of *your* personal reasons to return the unit - things that I don't even find problematic. Your post includes some sweeping generalizations (none of 3rd party apps...) based on a small sample of apps, emotionally charged negativity (i.e. "stinks," "crappy") & at least one illogical expectations (no cool cases... hey, it's only been out a week or so!).

We all read these forum messages & process the information in it in different ways. I read the posts about the battery life & the revolutionary CO & the ease of WiFi & the voice recorder & see my glass as way more than half full rather than almost empty. I'm coming from a 615 so that my explain some of my feelings.

It seems, however, like you basically *want* to return the TH55. If that's the case, do so. It's your money, it's your choice.

If you want to purchase a PDA with zero problems or incompatibilities at all, you'd probably be out of luck -- all units have their weak points. And you can wait for Cobalt, but be prepared to tackle an entirely new set of compatibility issues.

Thanks Lupe Valenz (LV)

that's the kind of feed back I needed!!

A lot of valid points that a lot of you have made me think about.

I have decided to keep this AWESOME little device because of one thing!! I loaded Pocket Tunes on it and I can MAKE PLAY LISTS which is great when you use this thing as an MP3 player. I do miss the remote but I will get over it. It fits nicely in my Leather jumpsuit and when I am FLYING around the track listening to Linkin Park cranking in my Helmet I am in heaven!

The other thing it the Browser as I know a lot of you are trying to hack the unit to get that Browser on your older Clie (good luck) but to serf the net and listen to shoutcast blew me away. I have had Pocket PC's that I wished could do that but Never was able to but now SONY has done there job

I just couldn't't justify spending the money just to read about everyone not liking the unit and complaining. This unit is for the business minded who needs to dump the paper organizer and go digital.

SO I WILL KEEP THIS UNIT and shut up about it!

Thanks for all your feed back ad I know the decision is ultimately mine but I needed to get some people to push me in the right direction. That's what this is all about!!

So now I ride at 120mph to my pocket Tunes!!

GOD I love SONY!!:D

It is easy to have "buyer's remorse" after buying something in a market of constant and rapid improvement, but that's the nature of the PDA scene. Today's gem is tomorrow's clearance item. Just remember the positive reasons for buying and use the device. Often, negative user reviews are simply because of over-expectations or immature reactions to a problem.
