As far as I could see, it's the same format that Quicktime could open! Which means at least MPEGs, but somehow not MPEGs encoded with Virtualdub!!! (Why? I donno now).

Virtual Dub doesn't encode MPEGs, only AVI. It will DECODE mpeg and convert it to AVI.
Kinoma will encode anything Quicktime will. MPEG-1 and most older AVI formats. It will NOT do DivX/XviD or MPEG-2, so you need to convert it to something it understands, like Cinepak, Indeo4 or VP3, etc.
Kinoma also has a limit of 1GB file size for AVI, but will encode Quicktime files of any size.
hey GeekGod..can you remind us what program can DECODE a Divx to Mpeg..i thought it WAS Virtual Dub..
your quote "Virtual Dub doesn't encode MPEGs, only AVI. It will DECODE mpeg and convert it to AVI. " suonded a little bit confusing

Cool, thanks guys.
I might have to load Adobe Premiere again.
But first, off to the batcave to to look for free MPEG tools!
(batcave should read as Google)

Virtual Dub uses the mpeg codec to compress to avi that can be read by kinoma..
... don't bother with premiere, it takes too long to export.
i thought Kinoma Producer cant read Avis..only Mpegs and Quicktime Mov.s ?

You can load an MPEG-1 file into Virtual Dub and convert it to an AVI file. Virtual Dub will not save MPEG files. Not real useful for Kinoma, since it already converts MPEG-1.
AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave and describes a video format, not a specific type of file.
Technically, you could call MPEG an AVI file because it does use interleaved audio & video, but MPEG-1 and 2 are special cases that are given their own classification. Don't know why - it's just the way it is. MPEG-4 on the other hand, is classed as an AVI file (DivX is MPEG-4). Hmmm... who decides this stuff, anyway?
MPEG-1 and 2 are very specific file types, but AVI files can be a variety of file types - Cinepack, Indeo, VFW, DivX/XviD, VDO, Sunplus, Truemotion, Real Video, Vivo, etc. Kinoma will convert some of them, but not all (most noteably, DivX).
Virtual Dub will convert AVI files from one format to any other AVI format (as long as you have the appropriate codecs installed). Virtual Dub also has excellent cropping and filtering capabilities.
ON2 systems has a VP31 codec that is compatible with both Virtual Dub and Quicktime (and Kinoma). Using VP31 in combination with Virtual Dub is a good way to convert from incompatible formats (such as DivX/XviD). You could also use the Cinepack or Indeo4 codecs for Kinoma compatibility.
To convert from AVI to MEPG, use Tsunami Mpeg Encoder (TMPGENC). It will convert from most AVI formats to MPEG-1 (it will also convert to MPEG-2, but Kinoma won't).
Sorry for rambling. I'm tired today...

Hm'mm I'm getting now really confused. Namely I experienced Quicktime can not read Cinepack encoded films. (Didn't retry it now). So you mean, Virtualdub encoded Cinpack or Indeo4-films could be converted via Kinoma???
Problably I'm not that expert, but means 'ON2 system has a VP32 codec'? ON2 is a SW for encoding/decoding? And the output could be taken directly into Quicktime????
Last but not least, since all threads are gone, I remember you mentioned once about good conversion options. I'm trying to convert MPEG-file (555 MB) via Kinoma (10fps, stero 23.5 Khz) but the result is about 180 MB. What setting would you recommend? (Perhaps a new thread???)

I'm using TMPGEnc at the moment.
would i need QuickTime Pro to convert a huge Avi or Mpeg into a Quicktime file?...what did you use for that..
Yeah, im using TMPGEnc right now to convert some music video AVI's and Mpegs to MPEG-! format. Im going to venture into DIVX's soon tho. and that 1Gb limit I really want to overcome.
