Two Faced Pirates on this board

I'm sorry, but I really need to say something about this.

It is increasingly obvious that this particular sub-forum of cliesource is not only filled with software pirates, but worse, two-faced self righteous software pirates!

Anyone using NF3.1 on their UX's is a software pirate. There is No question about that. Whats worse in my mind:

1. Replying to posts asking for NF3.1 with namecalling (you pirate!) and threats of emailing virii. (Granted warez should not be requested on the forum - I am guilty of this as much as many of you - but to reply in this form when you are pirating the app yourself?)

2. Pirating the app, openly discussing it, posting screenshots (!!) and then belittling those who dont have it?

This behaviour is ridiculous. You are all pirates. I can understand following the CS rules, and I respect them. But if youre sitting there using pirated software and someone else would like to do the same, who do you think you are questioning them with such hostility?

I would have to say I agree with you, maxxed; this is one of the reasons I do not frequent this forum as much as I used to, and sometimes I am so appaled by what i read...... eh. you all get the drift. lets all get some disclipine and use this forum for what we should be using it for: the spreading of ux-50 info, tips and tricks.

I agree with some of your points. However, you're making it seem as if this is a UX forum problem when in reality it's epidemic across all Internet message boards. I actually like this forum a lot compared to some others I used to post on before they were hijacked by idiots.

As someone who remembers pre-US Robotics Dual w/16550 UART dialup BBS days, I can tell you that "hackers" are in general an elitist group. They take pride in having software that is either not available or difficult to acquire for the general public. But that's not even the issue here. Most of the aggressive reponses were towards posters who simply ignored or disregarded repeated requests by mods and others to stop asking for the file. Half the posters here have never read the FAQ's nor are they aware of its existence. If you want to be treated with respect, then respect the rules set forth by the admins.

FWIW, I can almost guarantee you have "pirated" software installed on your computer or palm - even something as trivial as continuing to use shareware (like winzip) after its trial period is over. You're not free of sin. No one is. So if you don't like it, take your holier than thou attitude elsewhere. It's your right. Posting your message will not create a paradigm shift. Sorry.

Firstly, I would like to say that I am fan of CS and this is my preferred forum for all-things-clie. I am not commenting about the board, but rather, as the topic plainly states, 'two faced pirates on this board'. I though this distinction was obvious, and apologize if it was in any way unclear. Having said that;

I never said I wasn't a pirate? I am currently using NF3.1 and am very happy with it.

Happy enough that I would not begrudge any other UX50 user their desire to install and run the software. I am also honest enough to not call anyone wanting to run the software a 'pirate' with any host of preceeding adjectives as seen on the board.

I too recall the slow-modem dialup BBS days, and am aware of the elitist mentality that surrounds piracy and the perceived exclusivity surrounding apps, hacks, cracks, etc. That doesnt make it right?

I am not after a paradigm shift. I am simply excercising 'my right' to make a statement regarding the obvious fact that certain members of this board are two faced pirates. Very simple.

As far as being labeled 'holier than thou'. I think you misread or misunderstood my post. I am only bringing to attention the fact that users of NF3.1 are insulting users who wish to use NF3.1. I am not offering the software, nor advocating or discouraging piracy.

Your point regarding us 'all being pirates' is spot on. All I am saying is, if we are all pirates, why the hostility? Surely your point only re-enforces the hipocrisy that exists from certain members here?

Had a bit of a problem installing it, but there is a great thread on here for all of us pirates to benefit from, with detailed instructions on how to set up and install our illegally obtained software ;)

I agree with the original post in some respects, but not in others. I think most of the people on this board are very respectful of copyrighted software -- pretty much anybody who brings up warez is shot down.

Netfront 3.1 and the enhanced apps for Sony Clie and T|3 are a different matter. They're not available to the public, and in some respects there is a legitmate sense of entitlement to these programs that some people feel.

But whether or not I agree with the condemnation, I applaud the audacity of starting a flame thread under your own name, unlike some gutless cowards have done in the past!

i don't see how you can consider the original posters attitude as "holier than thou" given that they admitted requesting the software.

i agree that a few of the NF 3.1 owners are being a bit snide and elitist in their owning something which isn't readily available. This isn't grade school and NF 3.1 owners aren't in the exclusive "cool kids club". i take it that discussions (including pictures) of pirated software is permitted in the TOS, while discussions of how to obtain them are not? i'm not suggesting things should be different, it's just an odd paradox, like how in some parts of Asia it's illegal to sell pirated wares but not illegal to buy them.

i requested it too and didn't get it. Big deal. i'll find a place to download it or i'll rip it off of one of the newer Clies when they're available.

Sorry if I overreacted, but I tend to side with smeggie and 40 and all the other people who are being criticized for the way the handled this issue. Would you like your PM box flooded with 100 messages containing the same request even after asking for no more requests? Or worse yet, how about your email box flooded with the same requests? I would have gladly sent the file to people, but I did not want to get flooded with requests.

FWIW, there are copies all over usenet. And please don't ask me where or how to get it.

Hope you don't own or don't intend to own another Clie again, because you're only encouraging them to give lackluster support by doing so, and/or not making your complaints heard effectively. It's a dilemma i face every time i buy a PDA. Unfortunately, Sony's willingness to innovate is greater than their horrid support, spotty build qualty, and lack of intuitiveness.

I only wonder. If somehow, in my travels in the Hong Kong warez backstreets, I manage to hack together the Clie Organizer for the UX50, I wonder how many PM's I would be receiving (and from WHOM) and how I would react to them? Surely I wouldnt threaten a virii email, maybe I would just turn my PM's off? Next job, hitting the streets :)

I don't have it nor do I intend to try it. I like AppShelf just fine. I have yet to try the new beta though as I heard there weren't any substantial improvements.

Just for your info the Cliesource mods are also to blame because tehy say on thing and practice something else.

The screenshots from their UX for nf3.1 should not be on this board until the mods approve of it. So until the mods said yes the image of the screenshot wont appear with their post. So the Mods say one thing and practice another.

Also I saw pelaca openly requesting a couple of CF files from Japanese NX series. I appreciate everything he has done for Clie owners so far but if you have a policy of no trading Files on the forum it should be true for everyone "period".

And yes I was insulted by a member for asking the Netfront 3.1, you know what I did, I went and got a TH55 from CC and probably will return it this weekend( no questions asked till 14 days) because I still love my NX80's Camera. And besides the clamshell designs protects my screen.

Well, Daman's point about not being happy about one's PM box being flooded with requests is valid, but those whose boxes were flooded could have just responded in a mature manner and either just deleted the all the requests and asked in an adult manner in the open thread not to be pm'ed about it, rather than posting childishly hostile messages.

And, in case anyone is wondering, I DON'T have a copy of NF3.1 on my UX50. Wouldn't mind having it, but I'm not going to kiss up to anyone or throw a fit if I can't get it. It's not like this stuff is so important...it's not life or death, you know.

DaMan, authoring software is part of what I do for a living. I do not have pirated software. Every single copy I use are either legally bought, freeware or public domain. Why would I use a trial copy of WinZip, if I've bought WinRAR?
Don't assume that everyone are guilty, just because you and your friends are. That's like saying everybody do drugs, because you happen to be in an environment where it's common.
No, I'm not holier than thou, but when it comes to software, yes, I can produce a valid license (or my own source code) for everything I have in my possession, and have not "shared" any of it without permission or rights to do so.

If I had a UX50 and saw the need to install NetFront 3.1 and did so, I wouldn't be ashamed. It would simply prove I'm rebelling against Sony's crappy policies. Why couldn't they just release an update for existing users?

Releasing an update for existing users means they would have to invest the time and money to do so, in addition to very likely pay extra licensing fees to the company they license NetFront from. They almost certainly didn't pay a license for NNN copies including future upgrades.
Then they will have to provide QA and support for this. Imagine hundreds of boneheaded CLIE users who can't do something as complicated as this, or will make complaints about losing 2MB+ of memory, or will need support for a variety of other reasons.

In my opinion, Sony does the right thing by not providing any update here. On the other hand, I would very much like to see Access Systems selling a NetFront upgrade -- they have the know-how, support and it would cost them far less (2/3 or more of any licensing fee is for administrative costs).

I can't speak for all the mod's, but I am not really sure how you can put blame on them.
I haven't seen any screenshots that have been approved my the moderators. All the one's I have seen have been links to images hosted elsewhere.
As for Pelaca's request, you maybe didn't notice that the thread was deleted, so it was taken care of. There isn't a 24 hour staff here, but we do try.

Cluck cluck cluck. I come here to look for solutions to my clie problems since SONY seems to be in the selling and not the supporting role when it comes to clie's. But for crying out loud can we just leave all the chicken scratching and crowing for PM's?
That said, anyone used winhand copr version yet? Does it get through a firewall as advertised?
