I decided to try out this Bejeweled wanna be and upon installation discovered that it installed three other apps that I don't think had anything to do with the game itself. I only installed one .pdb file and I had seven new files installed.

Is this common practice for one program to install additional programs, beside files that the origin file may rely on?

This is not 'common', but I know of a few other programs that do it as well.  Usually, I think it's done to make installation of many files easier.  Launcher X does it.  BodyAdvance does it.
