I don't THINK it's required for ClieMail to work-- I haven't configured either.
I did delete Mail from my NR via JackSprat, and ClieMail launched just fine afterward (a good sign)-- but I haven't configured it for use yet, so I can't comment on its full functionality.

I'll have to recant my testimony from earlier. I suggest you leave the Mail app alone, or at the very least don't touch the "stub" file that's left behind if you delete it with the regular version of jacksprat. I'm not sure it's wise to remove the Mail app with the nostub version at all, as there's not a new version of the Mail app for the OS to look for.
I deleted the mail app with no ill effects. However, when I went to further modify my flashROM with the JackSprat-nostub version, I noticed there was a stub file left behind for the Mail app. All the other items I deleted from ROM did NOT leave behind any stubs (I hadn't deleted address/datebook/memopad/todo), so it appears that Mail is one of the 'special' apps like the 4 hard button apps.
Without fully understanding the features of the nostub version, I changed the mail stub file's attributes from "old" to "new", and updated my ROM (thinking that would delete the stub file). Baaaaaaad move-- my ROM's now corrupted to the point that I can't even get the OS to load enough for a hotsync-- so I can't restore my original ROM.
I've got a query in to Brayder support to see if they have any salvation ideas, but I've also got a ticket logged with Sony Support to send my unit back in for reflashing. Worst case scenario here is that I'm parted with my handheld for ANOTHER week, AND may have to shell out $125 to Sony for an out-of-warrantee repair (I'm within my 90 day period, but I suspect my mistake has voided my warantee).

You didn't backup the rom to your memory stick did you? Do you have any other method of getting files to the memory stick? I have a copy of my NR rom with the flashwrite utility. If you could get it on the memory stick and then copy it to the NR's ram, that should work. I'm not sure what the legalities are of this, but you own jacksprat/jackflash (as do I) so it should be fine. Let me know if I can help.

I backed up my original ROM to both memorystick and my desktop. However, it's useless to me, as I can't get the unit to boot enough to read anything via memorystick nor hotsync.

UPDATE! After reading through all the threads here that have "jacksprat" in them, I decided to perform a "warm reset" of the device (holding down the up arrow while performing a reset).
The NR70V has now rebooted without a fatal exception! The hotsync operation doesn't appear to work, but luckily I had also backed up the original ROM to memorystick.
After going through a ROM restore, then re-doing the JackSprat/JackFlash moves, everything appears to be in order.
Joy.
Though, it appears that Sony Support would have reflashed my ROM for me for free (according to someone who had that done within the first 90 days of ownership).
Anyway, back to the topic at hand-- I can't recommend removing the mail application (I didn't this time). Or, at least, deleting it using the nostub version of jacksprat might not be advisable (it was the only item I deleted from ROM that left a stub earlier).
