This isn't really new, but I know a lot of TH users are new to VG and OS5. If you have the VG area showing (either in G2 or Decuma or any other VG add-in), you can take your stylus, put it on the VG change button in the status bar, and then drag the stylus to the right on top of the status bar, and the VG area changes to the next thing in your list. This is convenient when you want to switch entry methods fast, and it saves you a lot of taps over the normal method.

Thanks, that's a good tip. So far I'm liking Decuma more than VG2. I guess VG1 is too ingrained.

At work, I need to register my MAC address before I can access the wireless network. The problem was finding it. For others looking for it, here's how:
Go to Preference-Network and select Details. On this screen, there's a hidden menu, and on that, choose Information-ConnectionStatus. On the next screen, it shows your MAC address.
Many thanks to Griff for figuring out the above and sharing it with me!!

I'm not new to either one of them, though I used my keyboard 98% of the time on my NX. But, for now, I'm using Decuma a little more than G2. I do use G2 in apps like Handyshopper, where it updates the search for each letter you enter. Same thing applies to Ultrasoft Money. But if I need to enter a lot of text, it's usually in Decuma for now.

Great tip, rldunn - thanks!
Any chance you could start a "sticky" thread called Tips & Tricks for TH55 users? Coming from a 615, I've personally missed all the OS 5 Clie tricks & perhaps so have others.
Plus there's lots of new stuff to be learned & shared, I'm sure.

The The Go Go app provides a lot of tricks:
- Remaps the capture button to power on/off when the lens cover is closed
- Remaps the "4th" button
- Remaps the Voice Recorder button to do a hotsync.
Currently, the app is in Japanese, but see this thread for translated screenshots that show how to set it up.

Also, for those who don't want to give up on VG1, you can always use TealScript, which I've done for years now. It let's you customize your graffiti character strokes.

New tip: To start datebook entry, be in datebook & begin writing. That will bring up "Event Details" which will allow you to choose all the options for your datebook entry.

As some of you might recall, I had earlier edited NetFront 3.0's user agent string to allow myself to log onto websites that require Internet Explorer.
I was just playing around with my TH55's NetFront 3.1 and have discovered that it allows you to change the agent string from within the program (no more hex editing!).
To do so, go to NetFront Settings then page down to page 4 (of 4). Click Advanced Setting then select the check-box for "Change User-Agent" and edit your settings.
I changed mine to: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows NT 5.0) so my TH55 appears as a Win2000 box running IE5. Works well for my online banking (Wells Fargo).
Hope this was helpful....

Switching to Palm OS standard screen (page 27 of manual).
Menu >> Options >> Clie Organizer Prefs ...
Uncheck "Assign to Home". This will get you the standard Sony OS5 view.
Menu >> Options >> Go to Stardard View
Page 27 referenced some PDF but I tripped over it. For T665C OS4 users, this switch is not obvious and search on CS gave nothing or too much information.
Sorry if this tip is redundant.

I never had a problem with having to scroll left and right in AvantGo, but on the TH many of my custom channels were too wide for the screen. The solution was to use Fonts4OS5 to change to a different font for AvantGo. Problem solved!
Now if I could just figure out how to get the hardware buttons to page up and down (similar to how the left and right buttons on the back work), I'd be in business. I like that you can remap the buttons to "Forward" and "Backward" buttons, but the other buttons just for up or down to the previous or next link.
Hi guys,
The main reason i bought TH55 is clie organizer,WI-FI and landsacape screen.
How to switch landscape screen when i view photos,excel sheets and docs?
and idea/
rldunn
02-25-2004, 02:23 PM
To switch to landscape, you must be using software that supports it - none of the built-in software apps do except for Piscel. Several image viewers support landscape. Docs2Go doesn't support landscape, not sure about the other office apps. PalmReader supports landscape, as do a few other ebooks apps.

Yeah, I liked that one, too. Unfortunately, I can't do it anymore after installing the silk plug-in "Clie Net Mon." Related to that, Clie Net Mon constantly says my connection speed is 10.00 mbps--anyone know if that doesn't work or is that just the highest number it's capable of displaying? Doesn't seem very useful other than that feature.

If you are using anything like McPhling or Energy Dimmer, take notice. I had my Energy Dimmer set up to activate anytime I swiped my stylus from "Launcher" to "Menu". I also have McPhling setup to go to the previous program when I swipe from "Apps" to "Graffiti". Becaus eof this, when ever I wrote a lower case "L" in Decuma, I would get the Energy Dimmer slider to pop up, adn when ever I would write an upper case "L" or "T" etc, I would all of a sudden go to the previously used app. If you are going to use Decuma and either of these two apps, or any other apps that use this type of combination to call up a certain feature, beware that the apps still see the area as a Grafitti area and will funtion as such. Either slightly move where you are drawing your characters, or change and/or disable the features.

No, ClieFile doesn't delete associated databases. You have to choose each thing you want to delete. It would be better to get to the standard launcher or a 3rd party launcher, since even if you knew all the associated databases, you wouldn't be able to delete the app's system prefs.

2 tips:
Someone earlier mentioned a slight hassle with McPhling tagged to a swipe in the virtual graffiti area. I've got McPhling mapped to "hold" and back button for "back", "hold" and push up/(short jog dial next to round back button) for the apps menu. Used the "custom" option to set it up. Works beautifully.
In an extensive TH55 review (at this site, I think) the author mentioned downloading a zip file to the memory stick, unzipping, and installing. But I didn't recall the how. Using the TH55 exclusively>>> Went to PalmGear, downloaded PocketTunes. Dialog box popped up showing where the zipped file would be stashed on the MS. Maneuvered to that directory with ZLauncher's File Manager. Nadda. On a hunch, tried Clie Files. Once in the directory, did a tap and hold on the zip file. Shocker (to me, may be old news to to you) >> I got a directory view of the files in the Pocket Tunes zip file. Checked the box for the prc and pdb files, tapped unzip, and the sucker installed to RAM!
Meanwhile, I'm enjoying my jazz tunes on the stereo speaker cradle.
Hot dang, I'm luvin' this device! :p

TR, yeah, I love the fact that ClieFiles handles zip files. I check my email with ClieMail at night and in the morning, and a lot of times, I'll have a ZL beta waiting for me. Save the file, open Clie Files, unzip the necessary PRC, and I'm up and running so much faster than if I had to use a PC!! Very cool!!

For me, it's slowly but surely turning into ClieFiles usage, as opposed to my previous exclusive reliance on ZLauncher's File Manager. This whole zip-access thing came as a complete surprise to me, as I was about 2 minutes away from purchasing FlyZip or a similar app. Sony really should shout this feature from a rooftop.
Then again, I've yet to actually read the entirety of the pdf manual, so this may be "my bad". I'll do so this weekend, as I'm really curious to see if it's spelled out anywhere in the materials provided. If not for that one line in the review, I'd still be clueless!

They (Sony) did in fact mention this fact on SonyStyle website and also in the manual & a brochure I picked up in a store a while back. I chose the word "Mention" carefully...Sony merely mentioned this feature (which I think is great) instead of actively promoting it. This feature would attract a lot more people to Sony in my opinion if they only knew about it.
Man..Sony just does stuff AS*S backwards sometimes.

Voice Record Button
Moose Man said, "great for left hander but ..."
Take the unit in your left hand and flip it over such that the screen is facing your palm and the voice record button is under your left thumb. Now push the button up with your left thumb and record away.
This is better for the right hander because the taperred tends to push the TH55 into your hand instead what happens for the left hander (Pop out of the hand). Left hander are pushing with either the right hand thumb in the flipped configuration or with the pinky finger in the screen facing up configuration.
A picture is worth a thousand words. Yes, I reversed the pictures for you.
The right-hander voice recording configuration.

I'm not sure where you're looking and I haven't needed to buy a MS in 6 months or a year, but at least back then, MS were always ridiculously high in the B&M stores. However, there were always fantastic deals online at places like Amazon, and the prices were equal to or better than SD. CF will always be lower since it's been out so long and it's an inferior technology in some ways (bigger, speed, etc). The Pro MS will probably be more expensive, but I haven't needed one of those yet, since the purple 128MB one fits me just fine.

I am a totally WiFi newbie. I bought SMC WiFi hardware back in Nov 2003 and never hooked it up because the Belkini CAT5 router worked great.
Anyway, the TH55 gave me a reason to pursue it.
Here is the network I setup. SMC technical was very helpful last night and we had the Cable modem DSL->SMC WiFi to my desktop computer running in less than an hour. I test my Internet connection speeds to verify that WiFi would not impact performance to the Internet I enjoyed with the Belkin router.
http://www.cliesource.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=2681
Earlier, I had configured the TH55 per the documentation and tried connecting the TH55 before calling SMC technical support in frustration (Not a TH55 issue).
I guess I left it on "connect mode" or something because when I turned my attention back to the TH55, google was on my Clie TH55. Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good.
I had trouble getting a good snapshot of the PowerPoint slide so if anyone wants it, I will try harder to post a good graphics.
Also, note the slower connection to the Internet versus my Desktop computer. They are both running 802.11b to the wireless 802.11b router. Thinking it may be the TH55 CPU under clocking on graphics during webpage download. Time and investion will tell, I am very happy with the results.
Why is the WiFi slower on TH55 versus PC? See the following thread.
http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=43718
Also, read the FAQ.pdf on TH55 CD page 33 for how to turn off PowerSaveMode.
Hope this helps and enjoy the leap day.
P.S. FIA WRC, feels nice to help out and be quoted.

Another good aspect of the TH-55:
On the AudioPlayer, you no longer have the adjoining controller (like with the NX series) to go forward or backwards. You can use the buttons next to the scroll wheel (on the back).

***Just change the MPEG file name to .MQV***
you can save the MPEG file directly to the MQ_ROOT folder! then rename it (either in your PC or on the TH55 itself) to "MOVXXXXX.MQV" (X = any number that sequencially followed the one listed before)!!!
then open the MoviePlayer, but the file u tranffered in will not have the proper name showing on the list (it will appear as "???" so u just have to figure it out which is which). after u click on the file if it's the supported resolution and file format, it will play! the only ones i tried so far are as follow:
Directly copy from PC to MS (about 10MB):
Video size: 352x240 (500kbps)
Audio: 44100hz, 16bps, 2ch (128kbps)
Length: 0:02:07
Bitrate: 637kbps
about 30fps
Directly downloaded of the internet (www.pocketmovies.net):
Video size: 320x176 (unknown kbps)
Audio: 44100hz, 16bps, 2ch (96kbps)
Length: 0:16:42
Bitrate: 97kbps
about 25 fps
about 12MB
Both of these run very smoothly and very nice quality movie (however u should disabled the resume funtion in the quicktime because it will cause the MPEG file, especially the first file, to not running smoothly). However, I have not test any other MPEG files with the different resolutions other than these 2 files.
I have also tried the same method with .AVI, .MOV and .WMV, but none of them work. Since, Sony originally not supported them anyway, but just wanted to try. hahahha--- Also, i do noticed that if u want to be sure which file will mostlikely works on TH55, u can just open up the ImageCoverter and add the file to the program (u dont need to convert it, just use this program to check the file that's all!). If it's not the supported format and resolution, the error message will appear!
Anyway, hope this help! let me know if u have tried with other resolutions and the result?
Sorry for bad English. (^_^") Thank you for reading,

You only have to hit each line once for the whole line to be erased, rather than having to hit each pixel. So, drawing a line through all of your text or drawings is usually sufficient to erase the whole thing and erases much quicker than doing a longer erase and trying to hit everything. So basically, make short erase strokes and it erases much faster, then you can easily clean up what's left.

This is only available in the full retail version of Intellisync. If you do decide to upgrade (your other option is Pocket Mirror), make sure you get the Sony update. All that being said, I don't remember this being a problem when I first used Intellisync Lite on my T615C. I'm wondering if they took this out of the Lite version for the TH55

Pretty dismayed about this myself. More upset still that the full version costs $70. So my question is, will the Intellisync version that came with the 615/665 work with the TH55? Has anyone tried this?

Actually, the upgrade is about half that amount. At least that's the way it was for me.

If you mean the desktop, I don't know as I sync with Outlook. As far as CO on the PDA is concerned, it's OK. I upgraded last year because I needed some sophisticated filtering, so I could maintain separate work and home calendars and contacts. I haven't really found any problems per se, but it is a bit quirky.
I looked at Pocket Mirror and the features looked really nice. If I can find my old Palm VX disk, I may load up Pocket Mirror, udate to the latest (free I hope), and give it a whirl.

I know someone mentioned unzipping files using Clie Files, but you can also view the readme text files by unzipping it into MS and importing the file using CO Memo pad. Works great and can view the installation notes so no need for computers at all for installations.
I'm loving it!
Here's another UserAgent tip that I found today. In order to get NetFront to work with yahoo (http://mobile.yahoo.com/) and techbargains (http://www.techbargains.com/pocket/index.cfm) I needed to change the UserAgent to "Mozilla/4.0 (PDA; Windows NT 5.0/5.0) MSIE 6.0/6.0"
I found the info in a review of NetFront for the PPC here: (http://www.pdajunkie.net/pdajunkie_net_netfront30.htm)

If you edit your post you can only "see" the first 10-15 words.
Put your curser in a blank space.
Now add a "space".
Now you can see the whole post.
Everything looks good for you to add to your post.
Hope this helps.

Hello, this is great info. I just got my TH55 and I'm so used to my PEG-T615C and how the older Graffiti stroking method worked. I'm not as smooth with this new "G2" or Decuma method and preffer using the "G1" or whatever my 615C had. One question and anyone can answer this, what is the "VG area". Sorry I'm not too familiar with the clie jargon.
thanks in advance!

VG= virtual graffiti. It's the area which "collapses" to allow you to view the entire screen when you don't need to write in the basic apps.

Many thanks to Griff for figuring out the above and sharing it with me!!
Is there a way of spoofing the MAC Address?

Not sure what you mean by VG switch stroke. If you mean "collapsing" the VG area, tap the white arrow in blue box on bottom rt. of screen. Any app which supports VG will be full screen.
If you mean go to earlier version of Graffiti, see message above for link.
If you mean switch from Graffiti screen to Decuma screen, slide your sylus on the bottom of your (non-collapsed) VG screen from the time area to the end & Decuma will replace Graffiti. And vice versa.

Alternatively, you can have a look at the Sony help file.
Press the Silk Plug-in button (which is in between the "Find" and Battery Life buttons in the virtual bar at the bottom of the screen) and press the info (i.e. the "i") button on the top right corner of the window that is brought up.

Whenever you have that problem with a ZL theme, there is a way i found to go back to normal without doing a hard reset.
1. Do a soft reset
2. when the Preferences screens appear, tap the right - up menu and choose buttons
3. Change any button to Clie.Org.Applications
4. If you do not have ZL Manager, you should install it
5. Run ZL manager
6. Delete the ofending Theme
7. Exit ZL Manager and Clie.Org.Applications
8. ZL should start normally
Hope this helps
The old version (up to the TJ35) of Intellisync Lite has the option to keep old calendar events; it works with the TH55. Looks like it has been removed with the version provided with the 55...
I do not succeed to get the "dial" function (from the Address book) work with a Bluetooth connection to a phone (Nokia 6310). However, Bluetooth works fine to use the phone as a modem.
Has anybody got "dial" to work and if yes, how?

Sorry if this is a duplicate. I never used the "Back Button" for anything until now.
While browsing ClieSource, I constantly get the annoy popup with the following message.
"Invalid certificate. (Issuer of the root certificate not registered in the certificate database)"
If you change your "NetFront Settings" on page 4/4 for "Back Button:" from "Home" to "Go Backward" then you can tap the "Back Button" instead of using the stylus.
Test both methods.

I can recommend TimeCopy as a utility and conduit that can be used to keep your TH55's clock in sync with your Mac or Windows PC, and if your Mac or PC is set to get the current time from the internet, then each time you sync your TH55, its clock will be corrected to the current time.
I've been using it for about 2 years with my Mac, and it has never failed me.

you can save the MPEG file directly to the MQ_ROOT folder! then rename it (either in your PC or on the TH55 itself) to "MOVXXXXX.MQV" (X = any number that sequencially followed the one listed before)!!!
then open the MoviePlayer, but the file u tranffered in will not have the proper name showing on the list (it will appear as "???" so u just have to figure it out which is which). after u click on the file if it's the supported resolution and file format, it will play! the only ones i tried so far are as follow:

Using the Clie Organizer and just decided to max out the Address book :). Since the lil photoicon is too small to see anything decent of that person, I like to build a lil icon representing that person, then I go to free notes, attach multiple photos of that person, attach small voice recordings of certain people voices I love to hear :D. and attach that free note to the corresponding address. Its just nice to finally click on that photo and see the full size photo unlike the smaller format on the UX :(.

I read with TH55 all the time in NetFront 'single column' mode and the default font size is too small IMO. I have made a request to go to a Size=3 but no response. Also, font select buttons are not available while using the TH55.
Tip: Create a short cut in Pref. I have used 'sz' as my Short Cut name. Should work for Decuma user also.

Cheers, Rich

There's a thread here somewhere going into detail about this. Bottom-line: every now and then, I use a file mgr to go into the RAM listing, and then delete all pdb files beginning with NF3 -- except the Bookmark and cookies files. (Using the cache-kill command didn't work for me, in terms of curing this problem.) After doing so, the next time NetFront is started, it recreates whatever files it needs. You'll see NetFront's splash screen as it recreates those files. FWIW, I've gotten into the habit of doing this weekly. Keeps the goblins away.
FYI >>> Here's that list of files. Boldface = I leave it alone.
* NF3AUTHINFO
*NF3BOOKMARKDB
* NF3CACHE
* NF3COOKIEDB
* NF3FILEDIALOGDB
* NF3INFODB
* NF3MSDB
* NF3PLUGINDB
* NF3URLHISTORYDB
Whatever you do, PLEASE, backup first, preferably with something like BackUpMan, which backs up to the MS. No telling what may happen with different software combo's on various machines.

I developed an freeware called "GimmeFive" that may solve your problem. You can refer to this thread for detail:
http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59777
Launching Command Bar, "/" from VG down
You can launch the command bar by simply doing a finger tip "/" flick from anywhere along the status bar to screen (or ZL bottom bar), with VG down (i.e., displaying 320x480 screen). That saves you a tap. I found this method handy as I use the cut, paste, copy, undo, often and have several apps residing in command bar too such as McPhling, SnapCalc5, and DALauncher5. The command bar will just popup over the ZL bottom bar. This way you are always in the big screen view and avoid poping up and collapsing the VG just to launch the command bar.
Shortcut to Data Import
Here is another one that I found it to be very useful for transfering MP3 or any files from PC to memorystick (MS) or vice versa:
1. Connect the TH55 to PC via USB/HotSync adapter.
2. Tap the MS icon in status bar.
3. Tap 'PC Link' button
I used to do it by finding and launching Data Import, then tapping Connect button. PC Link will do that automatically for you and the MS icon is always there in the status bar staring back at you. No need to find the Data Import icon. you can even hide the Data Import icon to make the screen looks cleaner.

One-hand operation to unlock TH55 and read ebook
I've been wondering about how I can do this, i.e:
1. Turning the power on.
2. Entering the password on the "System Lockout" screen.
3. Tapping the OK button on the "System Lockout" screen.
4. Opening eReader and start reading.
All with the same hand that holds the Clie.
Well, I figure it out with the help of TealLaunch (http://tealpoint.com/softlnch.htm), LClipDA (http://www.freewarepalm.com/utilities/lclipda.shtml), and THe Go! Go! (http://www.excite.co.jp/world/english/web/?wb_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ne.jp%2Fasahi%2Ffairy%2Fchimera%2FOnl%5FOthersPalm.html&wb_lp=JAEN&wb_dis=2&wb_co=excitejapan).
What I did was:
1. Map the Capture button to Power Lock on/off with THe Go! Go!
2. Map the TealLaunch window to Jog Hold.
3. Add LClipDA and eReader into the TealLaunch list
4. Add personal security password to LClipDA.
To do the one-hand operation to unlock TH55 and read ebook then as follows:
1. Press the Capture button to power on.
2. Press the Jog hold (long press) to popup TealLaunch window.
3. Jog scroll to LClipDA.
4. Jog press to launch LClipDA.
5. Jog scroll to the password in LClipDA.
6. Jog press to paste the password on the "System Lockout" screen.
7. Press the Back button to activate the OK button.
8. Jog press hold to popup TealLaunch window.
9. Jog scroll to eReader.
10. Jog press to launch eReader.

you simply just drag stylus from the Input button*next to memory card icon* all the way to the time slot field. That will slide from Decuma to Graffiti and vice versa.
Actually, you're not limited to that! You can do the drag from any location of the status bar, even on top of the home-icon or anything. That's a lot faster and renders the "Switch-Input"-Field completely obsolete. Should have been used for the (remapable) calculator field.
Another tip: Switching the input method by "swishing" the status bar will always change the method, BUT it will also bring up the VG if it was down (with the newly selected method showing). You save one click that way :D

What would be great would be the ability to call up the toolbar (from status-bar swipe northeast) and pop up the VG area at the same time (so a shortcut such as /S could be done in two taps)!
Any chance someone wants to make such a hack? :)

Switching to Palm OS standard screen (page 27 of manual).

Uncheck "Assign to Home". This will get you the standard Sony OS5 view.

Page 27 referenced some PDF but I tripped over it. For T665C OS4 users, this switch is not obvious and search on CS gave nothing or too much information.

Using CodeDiver to keep VG down whenever launching apps that run on 320x480
After using some of 320x320 apps, some of 320x480 apps can be defaulted to 320x320 screen. To keep the VG automatically down, I set CodeDiver's VirtualSilk of those 320x320 apps and a few of those 320x480 apps to the following settings:
SizeChg: Set
StartedSize: Long
StopedSize: Long
Here are my list of 320x320 and 320x480 apps that I use CodeDiver to keep the VG down:
1st AID
1Year
AlwaysOn
CardInfo
ChemTable
Colorize
CryptoPad
MathUPro
MetricMeasure
MSBackup
Pane
SoundUtl
StretFindr
TapeMeasure
WAClock
Yaps

ColorizeAfter trying PalmRevolt (http://3gxsoft.com/palmrevolt/) I deleted Colorize about 15 seconds later. 3D skinned color is soooooo much better than 2D! ;)
How about speed? Have you compared opening up pdf file with and w/o palmrevolt?

How about speed? Have you compared opening up pdf file with and w/o palmrevolt?No, I don't have a need for native pdf files, just use Repligo and convert the pdf files that I do need. You should download PR and try it. It's fully functional with only a register nag screen, but after setting the skin and exiting, you won't get nagged until you open PR again, which you don't need to do until you want to change to another skin. I can almost guarantee you if you try it you'll be hooked immediately, just like you were with 4cast! :p
You're right. I do like it and I see no effect on speed. $15 is not bad, so I registered it. Aqua Skin is cool. The orange color of info buttons (e.g, top-right corner button on DA popups) matches my Sphinx status bar Home/Menu/Find buttons. :D
Thanks for mentioning! Yap. I'm hooked on it! :p

Lotsa cool ones: Capsule Blue, Dark Gant, Mako Glass, Le_Refuge_Alt, StealthOS_Blue/Grey, WinXP Blue . . . and all the others come to think of it. :rolleyes:
Glad you like it! ;)
I tried Le_Refuge_Alt and WinXP Blue, but none fits better to Sphinx than Aqua skin. May be I change the VG/SB skin some day to fit other 3GX skins. The Aqua skin grey buttons (like the one displayed in HotSync title bar, Log, and Help buttons) are a bit bland. If I can put some color to them that would be great.
Do you use MetricMeasure and TapeMeasure? Some how the scales disapppear on my TH55 after I load PalmRevolt. :(

No I don't use those but all you have to do for apps that don't play well with PR is add them to the "Exclusions" and uncheck "Enable Skin" in the "Configurations" setting for that app, and it SHOULD give you back the lost functionality.
I don't have any apps that PR messes up, but I did add four apps that are completely skinned already, so I didn't want PR trying to do something it couldn't. Don't know if it really matters, but I excluded:
BibleReader
eReader
MSDict
Uninstall
BTW, most days I'm the bug! :D
That fixes them. Thanks. The strange thing is that I don't need to do this on my TH55/E1? :confused:
It may be time to do a hard reset and clean-up some of the junk in my TH55/U. :(
I have those eReader, MSDict, and Uninstall too, but I don't see any problem with PalmRevolt. Infact, I like the little orange dot that Aqua skin put on the selected dictionary in MSDict or up/down arrow in Uninstall, and the 3D look in all drop-down preference menu of the 3 apps. :)

I tested the trial version of CodeDiver and it only works when the system language is set to english (normally i use german). Is there a similar program that works with all language settings?

Keeping the NetFront Goblins Away

* NF3AUTHINFO
* NF3BOOKMARKDB
* NF3CACHE
* NF3COOKIEDB
* NF3FILEDIALOGDB
* NF3INFODB
* NF3MSDB
* NF3PLUGINDB
* NF3URLHISTORYDB
Whatever you do, PLEASE, backup first, preferably with something like BackUpMan, which backs up to the MS. No telling what may happen with different software combo's on various machines.
Update 3/22/06:
Backup your 'NF3BOOKMARKDB' to memory stick then delete all files below. Basically, all except 'NF3COOKIEDB'.
* NF3AUTHINFO
* NF3BOOKMARKDB
* NF3CACHE
* NF3FILEDIALOGDB
* NF3INFODB
* NF3MSDB
* NF3PLUGINDB
* NF3URLHISTORYDB
Now copy 'NF3BOOKMARKDB' from memory stick back to palm memory.
Why is the new procedure better? Because you can do it after the resets start. Also, you do not have to do the cleanup on a regular basis. After 16 months of restarting from scatch every 4 months because I got out of the habit of executing the procedure, this procedure has been solid for 10 months.
I contacted Sony Support because I've noticed there are updaters for all three of my Clies available from years back at Sony's website.
But they're all hidden inside Windows executable .EXE files.
I emailed Sony since I don't own a Windows box asking for the updaters.
Sony Support is either cute or clueless -- they recommended I use Missing Sync to install the .EXE files onto my Palm with my Macintosh.
So, no hope there. Does anyone have an archive of the updaters for the Clies in actual Palm file format? They can't object, I don't think, since they'd do nobody any good without an original Clie, and they make the files available without charge in the .EXE file format.

Try renaming the file from .exe to .zip, then drag and drop the file onto StuffIt Expander.
I have found that a lot of times files like this are stored in self-extracting zip archives, and if you rename them to .zip that regular ZIP tools can expand them and extract their contents.
I do not know if this will work for these files, but it is worth a try.

Well, if they use pdb files, then you should be able to load it up in a windows machine, pull the PDBs out of the Palm installation folder, and then sync them using missing sync on a mac. This of course means you need access to a computer with Palm Desktop or Clie Desktop installed. Bob is of course right. Alot of these files can be opened using an unzip utility. Sometimes unzipping utilities can even open the EXEs without renaming.
Yep, I understand how to use Windows for .EXE files. We just don't have a Windows box new enough (Sony requires Win2K or above, we quit at 98).
I'll try that when I can get to a Windows box, install Palm Desktop on it and get it configured to recognize my three different Clies (sigh). Then of course uninstall the stuff and hope I didn't blow up the borrowed machine. This is why I don't have Windows.
Okay -- instead -- has anyone looked at the files from the Asia/Pacific support site? They are _much_ friendlier about making the updates available, but I am not sure if they'll work with all my Clies (one from overseas, probably is ok). Here are some of their links.

WARNING WARNING WARNING
I haven't tried files from this site yet and Sony warns that some models won't work if they were sold in the wrong country. Wait for someone who knows more to comment.
Ok, got tired of wondering, used the files from the site above.
Here's the result, so far everything works
BUT, the wireless file numbers aren't right.
This is from the Info/Version list, and results compared to what shows up on the Sony support page for checking whether the updated files are present:
clie files 1.1.2 update installed -- all turned out as it should
- CLIE Org.Application v.1.01
- CLIE Org.Date Book v.1.02
- CLIE Org.Memo Pad v.1.01
- CLIE Org.ToDo v.1.01
Wireless update installed; one of two files turned out as it should:
- BCMLib 2.11
- CFEtherNppi should be 2.51 nothing found at all looking with the method recommended in the Sony info, and with Filez as well, just not there.
... EDIT ...
So, I backed everything up to the Memory Stick (Duo 512)
I used a borrowed Windows 98 machine to go to Sony and dowload the wireless updater, copied that to my Mac, and installed it with MissingSync.
Oops. I had BCMlib versions 2.10 and 2.11 showing
I had a CFEtherNppi file showing a version number of "pi" (no kidding, those two letters).
And I had Application Error whenever I tried NetFront.
Soooo, I did a cold hard restart (power key held for over 5 sec. while poking the Reset button, then left backside button for "Yes" to erase all).
Restarted. Everything worked and seemed okay, but, grrr, I wanted something newer than Jan. 2004 so I restored from my backup.
And -- I know this makes no sense at all. But NOW I have the correct - - - - -BCMLib 2.11
-CFEtherNppi 2.51
as well as the other update files.
It's like the first wireless update that got installed from the overseas site by MissingSync didn't change the file names visible; and the second wireless update wasn't recognized and screwed things up -- then after the cold start and restore from backup, the wireless update files showed up and worked.
Go figure.
Now, if I could only figure out a way to get this 512k Memory Stick Duo to mount properly on the Mac desktop, it'd solve my last immediate problem (well aside from the intermittent flaky camera question).
It complains I need to install some software on the "PC" -- anyone know if there's anything that will install on Mac OSX? "Data Export" is just PC files, I think, no clue if it's not.
Workaround now, when I can get the camera taking pictures (and it was very handy last weekend at a 65th birthday party for an old friend -- the designated photographer's batteries died, two other geeks pulled out phones or PDAs along with me but filled theirs up and quit, and I took about sixty pictures. Not bad for "the only ones" taken!
But I had to copy all the pictures from the Memory Stick Duo into the main TH55 memory, then back up the files to the Mac Mini with MissingSync, then find them (they'd been renamed "[sequence number].jpg.prc") and rename them to lose the trailing .prc -- making them usable JPEG files finally).
All 'round Robin Hood's Barn, as the saying goes, to get there.
Battery discharge times, anyone? (and do you do it with the backlight on full?)
I have the little BatteryDischarge app; bought a 3rd party battery about 8 or 9 months ago but it seems to be quitting. It might be the Clie -- it's having trouble detecting the thing's plugged in sometimes (no lightning bolt, nothing in BatteryGraph indicating it's plugged in, but it still recharges).
But it's going from 4200 down to 61 percent (4v) in four and a half minutes while running the BatteryDischarge test with brightness on full.
1 hr 12 min to automatic shutdown.
5 min. 40 sec to complete full charge, from the shutdown level.
Seems to me like the battery's failing. Anyone have comparisons?
Sounds like a bad battery.
OK. Anyone have an email contact for Vincent Chon outside of his private message box here? That's full, and not accepting messages.
PM me and I'll give you his email address.

It's been a long time since I came here the last time. Good to see there are some here still using Sony TH as I do.
My wife and I have been enjoying using TH55 from 2004. Now my wife's one got a broken screen, seems still working 'cause the alarm still comes off every morning, but obviously can't use w/o being able to see anything on the screen. The screen on mine seems had some leaking or something, just an area of water-stain like stuff at the center of the screen, and the camera module starts automatically once in a while, just like the camera button is pressed. Wonder if there is any screen replacement available? How about the camera module? Anyway to disable it? It's really annoying.
I haven't looked at any other PDA for years, except my Treo 680. Is there any other PDA out there w/ big screen and battery life as the TH55?
Thanks for your tips.
Best Regards,
Frank

Thanks, that's a good tip. So far I'm liking Decuma more than VG2. I guess VG1 is too ingrained.
