View Full Version : Anyone having problems w/ ATRAC's?
When I transferred songs I copied from a CD to memory stick using the Sonic Stage program that came with my NX 60, they displayed on the nx60's music player listing the artist's name, song name, etc. But using the same memory stick in my NZ90, the music player listed only "unknown" for the artist and song. So, I deleted the songs from MS and trasnferred them again, using the NZ90 to transfer them. Still got "unknown." Then, I uninstalled the Sonic Stage program (because it was the one that came with the NZ60), and re-installed it using the NZ90 CD (even though it was the same version of Sonic Stage). Then I did the trasfer again, using the newly installed Sonic Stage and the NZ. Even though the song and artist names appeared on the list in Sonic Stage, they showed up on the NZ again as "unknown". I'm really stumped!
Anyone have any suggestions on this? I REALLY want to be able to see the list of song titles in my music player instead of 30 "unknowns."
Thanks.

I've transferred several files to the NX for use with my NW-MS11 walkman, and the came over fine. These were audio books, not music files, but all the information was there. I do the transfer in the LP4 mode to maximize storage space, but they played back fine on my NZ w/titles, etc. I used the Sonic Stage that came with the NZ for all of this.
mkpc,
while i do not have the nz90 (yet), i know exactly the problem you are talking about. had the same issue with the artist and song listed as "unknown" in the clie when i switched from an N710 to N760. the solution was via an msalib (audio library) update from the sony support site.
if this is really an issue on all nz90 (hope other owners would comment), then sony will probably come up with an update soon. for now, you may want to check your device (or CD) for the 'msalib' file if it's even there (not sure if audioplayer would work without it to begin with).
this may not be the solution you need, but something to consider.

Thanks for the info. I've tried everything - even formatted the MS and started over from scratch. Same result - "unknown". The audio player works fine otherwise.
Bric, I think that might be the problem - that msalib file. I'm going to call Sony and see what they say.
Bric,
Talked to the Sony Tech Support today - they have NO information yet on the NZ90. I told him about the msalib fix for your 760 and he said (of course) that won't work on the 90, but they will probably have to come up with something like that. What's really odd is that if I copy an MP3 file directly onto the MG stick, it displays the title/author just fine. So, it seems to be a problem just with the ATRAC3's. Guess I'll just have to use MP3's until a fix comes out, or buy another MG and dedicate it solely to music files (it IS easier copying MP3's than it is to transfer ATRAC's).
Thanks again for your help.

Glad to see I am not losing my mind over this problem alone. I noticed that when I tried (several times) to install "MS Export", at the end of the installation I get the error message, "fail to install Clie memory stick driver". I can play the music in audio player fine, I just get no artist or album information. If I down load the same tracks as mp3's I get the correct information displayed. I will contact sony to see if there is a problem with windows xp and installing ms export.

First and foremost, I can't stand SonicStage. There, I feel better. :) I have used it though.
When SS imports tracks, it doesn't "know" the names of them, so you have two choices:
*click on the unknown on the program track name and type it in yourself.
*have it update itself online. I don't have the program in front of me, but the option is something like 'get track names'. Be online when you click that, and if the CD is in the library it'll update automatically.
I did it online, and the problem went away. After that, I learned about programs like musicmatch.com and got away from ATRAC's altogether.
Hope that helped.
Littlesix,
Thanks for the info - I hate SS too. But it worked fine with my NX60. It recognized the artist's name and song title, and transferred them over as ATRAC3's without a problem. Using the exact same music files, and the same transfer procedure, it transfers the files to the NZ90, they play just fine in audio player, but the 90 doesn't recognize names and titles. If I then go to "check" them back into Sonic Stage, SS recognizes the artist's names and titles that are on the memory stick. So the problem does seem to be with the NZ90's audio player. That's the only reason I'm a little reluctant to try a different juke box program, but I will keep musicmatch.com in mind.
When I use memory stick export/import to transfer MP3's, I have no problem. (and these are the same MP3's that I converted to ATRAC3's using Sonic Stage, but then audio player didn't recognize the names and titles).
MP3's take up so much more memory than ATRAC's, which is why I was using atrac, but for the time being, I'm just going to get another MS and dedicate it solely to MP3's.
Thanks again
