This is probably a nub question but I wanted to know if its possible to watch fullscreen movies on NX80 as in 320x480 res. (after converting avi, divx or mpeg formats)

Thanks

You can watch the movies in the full screen of your palm, but a little status bar at the left, that has the controls for the movie.

But your movies won't be a 320x480 resolution, they will be 320x240 resized movies, so the quality won't be the best you could get.

Yes it is possible, and in landscape format too :)

For full length movies, you will need a large MS preferrably a 256MB Pro or larger. I just reccently figured out how to convert movies DL from Kazaa [shhh...] to put onto CLIE. Now i got Last Samurai, Return of the King, Matrix Revolution, etc. :D The quality isnt all that bad considering how small the CLIE is.

so does your battery last as long as those movies? or do you watch them with the backlight off or low, and through headphones?

Hi everyone
Im the 'nub' unregistered user who started this thread.
Thx for responding to my query...

So as u guys mentioned.. if the res is actually 320x240 then wont it be stretched or smaller than true fullscreen in landscape mode? Does it look the same way as the TH55 below:

Also, how much juice can the battery provide if viewing the movie in suitable brightness? Speaking of battery, how long does it last with wifi?

thanks.

yep .. it looks just like that .. depending on your converting skills .. the juice is quiet great .. nx80 runs good on dim screen .. very bright .. the screen on nx80 is a bit better than th55 in term of brightness from many reviews i had seen .. you can run many hrs of movies on nx80 (depending on your setting .. if you set the screen at lowest .. you will get about 4 hrs+) .. but i recommend you put headphone on .. becoz it will save a lot of juice and the sound won't sound good on the speaker ..

you should ask people to confirm the exact battery power again .. i don't use my units much to watch movies lately .. (first 2-3 months i did a lot)

yes, i tlooks just like that with the bar on the right side. i'm not sure about battery life since i don't have a memory card large enough for movies, and i don't have movies anyway

o yeah- i still can't get movies to function properly off of my CF card. they open and play, but the control panel just becomes unresponsive. i can't close the movie or anything. even if i flip the screen, the image doesn't flip nd the movie just keeps playing.

How do you convert movies so that I can view it on my Sony Clie NX80V? What software do you use? TIA

ImageConverter. Comes on your Clie CD.

Hey, PBM808 -

Regarding your CF playback problem, there's a simple workaround -- always open your movie files in portrait mode, and then switch them to landscape. If you want to fast forward, press "Stop" first, then tap on the general area of the progress bar where you want to jump to and press "Play" again. No more crashes. Just be sure to switch back to portrait mode before you close out of MoviePlayer so that you're all set for the next time.

A great companion to ImageConverter which comes with your Clie is the TMPGEncoder.

It's a free download available here. (http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html)

The problem is that image converter only converts certain types of MPEGs for your palm. So if you have .AVI or .DivX movies you'll need to clean them using the TMPGEncoder first, then drop them into ImageConverter to squish them down for the Clie.

A side effect of the TMPGEncoder is that it puts your downloaded vids into a phatter format one step closer to playing on your home DVD-player.

Other kind folks in the ClieSource circle actually host some converted files on various websites. A good example is ncoday website available at his website. (http://www.ncoday.com/Handhelds/CLIE/downloads/Categories/tv.html)

He's also launched a few threads, like this one, (http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32997&highlight=tmpgenc) about videos for the Clie.

I personally love the Most Extreme Elimination Challenge. And c'mon, when your kids can watch Scooby Doo in the shopping cart, you have a certain level of 'coolness' about you.

if you use kinoma then you can fit the whole movie in the screen and then tap on the screen to bring up the controls. plus on top of that its alot less buggy when reading off a cf then movie player. good luck. i've have the nx80 for about 3 weeks and love it. paid 270 at best buy and havent looked back. enjoy

I didn't know that comes with new Clies?? It certainly didn't come with mine. Great program which I use all the time BTW.

I think he meant the Image Converter came with the CLIE not the TMGEncoder.

Thanks magicwv for reading my mind.

cyphion, the full screen sounds like a definite plus, how does filesize compare with similarly encoded IC-vids?

I've seen some of the files side-by-side on ncoday's website (http://www.ncoday.com/Handhelds/CLIE/downloads/Categories/tv.html). some of the kinoma files are twice as big as their MQV counterpart; e.g. Simpson's > duffless.

Tho, if you're running off a CF card, you could get twice as much memory space for much cheaper, so... perhaps size doesn't matter (except for obvious exceptions).

From what i know, Kinoma videos are converted using their own special program that you have to buy, which is different from Image Converter.

Kinoma's codec sucks, it's really old (Cinepak or something like that). It just can't give good quality/compression ratio. OTOH, it does play back on OS 4 devices!!!!

the files are about 2x as big, but as you said im reading off the cf, so size isnt an issue. i just like kinoma better. movieplayer has given me nothing but problems, soft resets, freezing, ect. just not worth it. the quality of kinoma is fine. you gotta remember that your not watching a movie on a $20,000 home theater. your watching it on a 320x480 screen with headphones, and thats about it. give it a shot.
