Here is a little star trek fan who has some problems with viewing his favorite episodes from the tv on his nx70v. I'm interested in some tutorials about, how to convert my downloaded avi files into mpg in order to put them into the image converter.
I need detailed descriptions of how to adjust tmpgenc.
thx

if you have them as avi's, they should read in image converter just fine
if they don't, get virtualdub and reencode them using a different video encoder, such as divx
and change your audio to microsoft ADPCM
then put it through image converter and it will work perfectly

though tMPGenc is a good program, if you dont know a lot about this stuff, or how to use it, get VirtualDub. it is much easier to use, and works just as well. all you have to do with it is choose in and out points, choose video codec (divx 5 is small and works with image converter) and audio codec (uncopressed microsoft adpcm works with IC), and save as a new AVI.

Ah, I think I know what the problem is: Non-Standard video output resolution.
This isn't very difficult to fix. You just need to resize the output video by using filters... This is because DivX can only encode video of certain sizes. (see images)

Press CTRL + F (or go to Video -> Filters) to get here. Click Add.

Add the resize filter. (Click Okay, or double click it)

You can accept the default resolution. Other "standard" resolutions can also work. Select a filter mode. Nearest Neighbor is fastest and lowest quality, while the bottom ones get progressively slower and better in quality. File size is the same. IC should get highest quality input possible, so I go for the slowest one.

And we're done! Make sure Video Codec is DivX, and then Save As AVI.
Good luck.

PS: I'll add this into my Clié Image Converter Tutorial when I update it over either Summer or Spring Break.

If I select divx 5.1.1 I get the error message (I mentionend it above) and if i select the divx 4 codec the quality becomes disgusting.
So what about the configurations of the divx 4 codec?

Hey tim_axe your tutorial doesn't work with with my file.
I still get the error message. So what now?

Hrm strange... Can you open the file up in Virtual Dub? Can you post the file information? (open it, go to File->File Information)
My best guess is the video resolution or framerate, though I find it weird that you can encode Divx4 but not Divx5. Maybe your Divx5 is corrupt? If you want to use Divx4, just have a datarate around 700-1400k for it (or higher), and the quality should be more than enough to be nice on the Clié. I'm not 100% sure if Image Converter takes Divx4, but it should. If it doesn't (and you tried converting into Divx4) then you might have to try other codecs, such as Indeo or Cinepak. But post file info so I can see if there are any obvious issues with the source.
Simply put - Increase the Divx4 data rate. Select divx4 compression, click configure, and increase datarate to around 700-1400k (or more). The quality should improve a lot.
PS: Sorry for not replying earlier.

If that is your source file, try this...
Open it.
Select Video -> Direct Stream Copy (This doesn't recompress the video, so you shouldn't see errors)
Select Audio -> Full Processing Mode (So you can convert audio)
Select Audio -> Compression -> <No Compression PCM> and hit Okay
File -> Save As AVI
Hopefully this will fix your issues, since the video stream is simply copied over, and the audio stream is decompressed. Image Converter should like the resulting file... If not we will have to find another video codec to compress into...
In VirtualDub, try using Xvid as the video codec instead of Divx. It has no limitations regarding resolution. I set the details to 1-pass CBR at ~ 900 kbps. I also use MS ADPCM for the audio codec.

Thx
Xvid does well, but the files are extremely big!

...in addition the sound qualtiy is disgusting but i suppose it's the source file's quality. Does virtual dub include any noise reduction filters, i didn't find any.
thx

Regarding removing static, I don't think Virtual Dub has anything for that. To acturally clean that up you would need to export the audio channels into a .WAV and take it into an audio-editing program, or something. Then reimport the audio into the .AVI, and all would be good.
I used to remember how to remove a continous static noise from an audio file, but I don't remember if I did it with the program Audacity (Opensource) or SoundForge XP (Ancient audio program) or some other software bundled with my soundcard / USB 2.0 & Firewire card...

PS: I never quite got Image Converter to like the XVID files I made... Maybe you got lucky or something...
