Subscribing to a Forum

Sorry if this has been asked before but I couldn't find the answer.

What happens when you subscribe to a forum?

When I subscribe to a thread I can get an e-mail notice of a port. Doesn't seem to happen for a forum unless I've got a setting wrong somewhere.

Supposedly the email notifications are there in version 3 of the forum board software, but not in the currently installed version.

Really? On forum notification (not notification when you posted within a thread, but notices of new posts in a forum)?

I've set it up, but never get any notices. Went to vBulletin site to investigate, and found that it doesn't work except in version 3 or up.

Oh, sorry, I've only subscribed to threads--didn't even know it was possible to subscribe to a forum--guess it isn't.
